So glad you got to watch this beautiful film! Andy's such a great character; not only did he plan his escape/revenge so skillfully, but he kept it a secret for YEARS, even from his best friend, to ensure that no one else would be implicated if he ended up getting caught. He knew it wouldn't end well if that happened, and he wanted Red and the others to be protected if the worst occurred. That's true integrity.
This movie has the highest score ever on IMDB, aka, it's regarded as the best movie of all time/ever made, which it at least deserves imo, regardless of opinions.

I saw this film at a press screening weeks before it was released. Ten minutes later, I was in an elevator with tears still in my eyes...and who walked in? Tim Robbins. The entire ride up, I kept telling him over and over again how incredible the film was. I almost hugged him.
"He has very long-term sorts of goals." I thought, "you don't know the half of it!" 🤣 The end of this movie is so cathartic and so joyful. Back when I had regular tv, it used to play fairly often, and if I came across it, I would finish it no matter where it was. It's endlessly rewatchable, and I love seeing the little things that take on new meaning, like Andy's face when the warden is holding his Bible. You see he's nervous but when you know that's where he's hidden his rock hammer, you go back and realize he's actually TERRIFIED.
Your joy at seeing Andy escape just made my day! This is one of the best adaptations of a Stephen King book (or short story in this case). I recommend another Stephen King adaptation, "The Green Mile".

This is my favorite movie of all time. Also, you should pay attention to the passages that the warden and Andy give to each other. They are worthy of praise.
The Tommy arc gutted me to the core when I first watched it, right after he qualified for his GED and had a kid.
The ending always makes me smile. Great casting choices for this movie.
I like how Andy placed the rock hammer on the first page of Exodus.
Andy didn't frame the warden. He exposed his actual corruption. Perhaps you missed the line by Andy when he tells Red "There's a river of dirty flowing through this prison". Warden was taking bribes for favors and laundering the money through the prison. Andy was cooking the books to make everything appear legal. What he had mailed to the newspapers was the proof. He was breaking the law too but by that time he was long gone with the warden's money.
I saw this in the theatre when it first came out in 1994. I was 20 years old. I think it was one of the most touching experiences I ever had in a theatre. I can still watch this movie again and again and never feel tired of it. In fact when I'm feeling depressed or just not in a good mood this is a really good movie to watch. It really brings your spirits up.
I avoided this movie for a few years, because I was put off by the name.

The character development is excellent and Mr. Whitmore's portrayal of Brooks is top notch.... after watching the movie so many times and knowing that, I am so invested in that character ...that when I get to Brooks' choice, I lose it.

They make your heart break for a murderer. They do the exact same thing with Del in The Green Mile. They're almost the exact same character minus some details ❤

Music Enthusiast Fact: The opera song that Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) plays over the loud speakers is "Canzonetta sull'aria" from "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. It was Tim Robbins' idea for Andy to turn up the volume of the record player in the scene.
Bird Timing Fact: When Andy goes to the library to begin work as Brooks' (James Whitmore) assistant and Brooks' crow, Jake, is squawking, Tim Robbins had to time his line so that the crow wouldn't squawk over him, since the bird could not be trained to squawk on cue. Robbins was able to time his line perfectly by learning the bird's squawking patterns, for which writer/director Frank Darabont praised him.

Morgan Freeman has so many amazing performances, but this one is my favorite. It’s like you’re hanging on every word he says the entire film.
Even with this movie being almost 30 years old, the story telling is top tier! The way everything unfolds is mind bowing. 🙌

I watched the Oscars (no pun intended) the year this movie was nominated, and they played the scene where Andy has just gotten out of solitary for playing the music for the entire prison. Morgan Freeman's character is talking about hope being a dangerous thing, and I remember thinking "this has got to be the most depressing movie of all time".
Then, I had surgery, and during my recovery, I had to stay lying on the couch for weeks, nothing but books and TV to amuse me, and after seeing pretty much everything else, Shawshank came on, and I watched it, falling in love with the story and the characters. The movie is an adaptation of Stephen King's novella, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. It is classic King, and that is why the dialogue is so good! It is, despite all the other wonderful movies I have seen before and since, my favourite movie of all time. I can start watching it from whatever part is playing on TV and settle in to watch it. It is the best!
The only other movie I can do that with now is Arrival (2016), and if you haven't seen that movie, Oscar, watch it. It will blow your mind! Love that you enjoyed this movie, too!
Most movies that bring you to tears are sad endings. This is one of the few that brings tears because of a happy ending.
This is my favorite movie. The reason is strange, but it gives me hope. My older brother did a very bad thing and is about 75% done with a 30-year prison sentence. I cannot make excuses for my brother. He needed to be locked up. I love him desperately and all I want to do is put my arms around him and hold onto him. I need to be my brother's keeper. I haven't been able to do that since a year before 911. Our father - the monster that destroyed my brother and almost did the same to me with a case (or two) of Budweiser beer in his gutless belly and cruel heart fueled by a twisted lust to control and take EVERYTHING from us. From when I was 9 until I asked him to stop when I was 14, he tried to blacken my heart. He failed.
When I watch this movie, I see Brooks as my brother. When I see Brooks on the bus, his frightened eyes burn right through me and I see my brother as an old man. If I can prepare for my brother's release in 2029, maybe I can help him. I look in the minor and I see another old man looking back through the slowest time machine - me, waiting. I will try and give him back (piece-by piece) some kind of life. But... Everyday as the release date approaches, I get more and more scared and I don't know if I can stop everything and give up everything for him. I teach 8th grade English and I am an Army Vet. I hope that I had a life that was good.
When I watch this movie, it makes me feel that I could be strong enough.

I'm not writing this "soliloquy" to garner any comments and/or pity. I'm writing this here because I don't have anyone to write to nor speak with. I thought I had to push people away to survive. I forced love to never find me because I thought I would hurt everyone around me. I was scared that I would turn into my father, but I never did. Now that I understand how stupid I was/am, nobody cares and I will stay alone. I'm trying to release some - how can I describe this old pain - pressure in my heart so I can try to sleep tonight.
larrycanupp411 - Growing up, I too had a similar father. What's helped me was to understand that IMO some people are put in our way to show us how to be, and some are put there to show us how *not* to be. People can change but finding the motivation is sometimes tricky and often not even in that person's control. For example, my changed-though-Christ father eventually did prison ministry in his later years and at his funeral, tattooed biker guys came up to us and told us how much our dad helped them find direction. When I think of men who've been to prison, I'm often reminded of the line in "The Grapes of wrath" and Tom Joad's mom asked Tom about incarceration: "Did they hurt you, son? Did they hurt you and make you mean mad?" As long as your brother can be reached in some way and you still care, there's always hope.
Please don't think that nobody cares - if you have the right attitude and patience, there is no reason you can't still connect with a quality person nearby. I'm a willful loner who's not lonely but I walk my dogs daily so I get to talk to a lot of people - some are interesting and some want to be alone, and I can understand them. Not every person is good friend material and it's good to be discerning with your time. To meet people, maybe volunteer in a field in which you have expertise, or take a community college course?
As for the old pain - I won't presume to walk in your shoes but I find the best medicine is laughter. I'm guessing it's part of why you watched this channel. This is one of my favorite movies and I kick myself for not catching it when it came to the theater back then, but I laugh and smile and cry with these young whippersnappers getting a little taste of a quality film. If you're an "Airplane!" fan as I am, watching just about any millennial film reactor watching this classic will have you grinning. "Popcorn in bed" is wonderfully innocent. I've loved watching "Tribal people try" channel. The lady who "saves the bees" (Texas Bee Works) is always inspirational to me. I like watching "Rob Squad reactions" for their couple music-reaction videos, especially music the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I’ve really been figuring that out lately
The reunion scene on the beach was filmed several weeks after the rest of the movie. Reason? Preliminary audiences wanted to see the reunion, not just guess if it did. Studio put pressure on Darrabont to film that additional scene.
I'm honestly glad they listened to the test audience. Sometimes they do get it right.
I live not to far north of the old Ohio State Reformatory "Shawshank Prison" which is in Mansfield, Ohio. It's impossible to drive by without thinking about this film, or trying to figure out which spot of the ditch they used when they filmed his escape scene. 😂
I'm one of a VERY small minority of people who actually saw this film in a movie theater. That was the fall of 1994. There was basically no advertising campaign and definitely no advertising saying it was from a Stephen King book (short story). I saw it without having any idea what it was about. I had read the story, so not too far in I realized "hey I read this story!"

I remember that happened to my sister! 😅 She read everything Stephen King and begged our Mom to take us to see this! Luckily I didn't go at 10, but it was a huge deal then!!
As much as I like todays reactors & I do. I feel watching a movie like this, or the Green Mile, or Alien or any of Spielberg's movies on a small screen while sitting at home in a lit room simply cannot compare. In the theater in the dark when 200 people jump/scream or weep uncontrollably... You felt it.
It did so badly at the box office because of not being promoted. What were the stupid suits thinking?

"Shitty pipe dream" foreshadowing and legendary script
One of two of my favorite Stephen King stories. This was a short story in a collection printed back in the early 80's. My second favorite is "The Green Mile", published as a series of five short books with four or five chapters per book. Every couple of months another book in the series would get published.
This movie was awesome the story telling and casting.
Also Cpt Hadley the evil guard -the actor Clancy Brown he's the voice of Mr Krab 🦀 in Spongebob
When the other actors gathered for a reading Clancy stood off to the side, they called him to join. You 'want' me over there with you? Have you guys READ the script? I wanna be a safe distance away.

THIS movie along with The Green Mile is my absolute tops of the best movies ever made. This goes to show just how brilliant a writer Stephen King truly is...an entire movie like this from a Novella..."Rita Hayworth, and the Shawshank Redemption"....Frank Darabont Directing as well as scripting was genius as well. Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman (an American absolute ICON of an actor), and the rest of the cast was so well suited for each role. (James Whitmore made me just adore Brooks). Absolute best ending to a movie ever..."I HOPE..." in Morgan Freeman's voice...perfection!
There are so many little details in this movie that are so well thought through. Even when the Warden opens the Bible at the end and discovers where the rockhammer was hidden it was under the book of Exodus. Such good writing

If you haven't...the sister movie to this is The Green Mile. You'll love it.
My favorite too is that the warden told Andy early on remember “salvation lies within” and the irony because Andy’s salvation lies within the prison walls and was within the physical Bible itself where he store the pick axe the whole time. Go back and watch that early scene where the warden comes into Andy’s cell to inspect it and Andy is being coy holding the Bible in his arm being so bold as to hold it right in front of the warden when the pick axe was in there and if the warden decided to open it at any moment Andy would be done….but the warden never does in fact he starts to leave the cell still holding it and then turns around and goes “oh here and as he’s giving the Bible back to Andy he says “salvation lies within”….just so GOOD!!!!
I remember reading the story for the first time when I was a teenager in the late 90s. I really didn’t see the big reveal coming! When I got to it, I was so happy I threw the book down and laughed out loud 😂 Love the book and movie so much!

It had everything: tension, drama, funny moments, heartbreaking moments, action, an amazingly mindblowing twist... (if you like good twists I can recommend the movie 'the sixth sense' if you haven't watched it already)
Shawshank redemption has so many great moments and I can't even pick a favourite one. It's definetely a classic that will last a long time.
In my opinion older movies of the 90s are the absolute best.

I have watched so many reactions to this movie, your reaction is the best so far. You mentioned that Andy was digging the hole every night since he found out the weak wall and he was also planning for his escape since then. I blame myself for failing to think that way.
You should consider a darker side of Andy Dufresne in the form of Tim Robbins where he stars in the 90's psychological thriller "Jacob's Ladder" guest-starring Macauley Culkin and George Costanza. A Viet Nam war vet, Andy is plagued by visions later in life that lead him to question his role during the war, and the efforts of his chriopractor to place him on the path to discovery.
Your right one of the best finishes for sure. I think the narration by Morgan freeman throughout the movie took the film to another level. Hard to believe it flopped on its cinema release. He was fortunate to be in the cell on the end the escape wouldn't have been possible otherwise. When you see the bus leaving at the end that was supposed to be the final scene thank goodness it wasn't.. Great reaction.

Fun fact: when at the end, they’re reading the Miranda Warnings off of little cards because the court case that caused Miranda Warnings to exist had just happened. Such a small thing, but for criminology people, it’s a great little detail to include.
I was having such a rough day and evening..... watching Shawshank Redemption was exactly what I didn't know I needed . I appreciate your reactions and comments for this film. It is a favorite of mine but it has been a long time since I sat down to watch this . This is one of those films that keeps my hopes up at being a known writer someday and not to give up on that . As someone who has been an exchange student to Czech Republic, Bohemian style beer is absolutely the best beer in the world. Budwar is one of the original brands and it is so good. When it was bought to the US and they made their own version, Budweiser, it was literally watered down piss! I'm so happy one of the stores in my town sells the original Budwar and at a very reasonable price I might add. Much cheaper than most other shops in our area. Today they even had a deal if you buy four large cans, you get a Budwar brand beer glass. Guess what is touching my lips right now? That's right.

Since you enjoyed this movie so much, I have to recommend the movie Sleepers. It’s an older movie, takes place over two time periods, when the characters are boys and get sent away to a juvenile detention and then when they are adults. It’s dark, but amazing and so well acted. And very underrated.
I concur with your recommendation. Sleepers is a fantastic movie, with a scene that easily ranks in my top ten movie moments of all time.

Fun fact about Tim Robbins (Andy): in the years since making this film, Robbins has largely stopped acting, and has created programs in prisons to help rehabilitate inmates through acting. Apparently the recidivism rate among participants after release is significantly lower than average.
My favorite thing about this movie is that every single scene is necessary. There isn't a wasted frame in the whole movie. It's always setting up something that will pay off or come back into the story at some point. Such good filmmaking and storytelling.

This movie demonstrates how hope can be the driver of prosperity *as long* as you keep being proactive. It may take decades, but as long as you keep going...little by little you'll reap the benefits of your efforts in the end. And it will feel the best doing it that way, because you've earned it.
This is one of those movies where I desperately wanted to see more. I wanted to see and hear the conversation that Andy and Red would have that first day. I wanted to see how they lived and what Andy's home looked like. I imagined a modest but picturesque little hut type house sitting right on the beach, with a nice porch, overlooking the ocean. Both Andy and Red sitting in a couple of rocking chairs, both holding margaritas, watching the sun set and having the coolest and most chill conversations. I wanted so bad to see that. 😊
Evening! The prison used was the Ohio State Reformatory tn Mansfield, Ohio. The city buildings were in Mansfield, and many were back-dated on their exteriors to fit time period. Many have kept the revised look. The prison that you see is preserved as a museum. It was also used for Tango and Cash, and was the Russian Cell block in American President. I was fortunate to be an extra in the prison yard. The premiere was held at Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre before California or New York. I am now 74, but always watch it when I can.

I honestly don't know which is better, if the novella or the movie. Since you are watching some of the best movies of all time, I really recommend you to watch The Godfather.

I've heard a lot of people say this is the best movie ever made, personally I think that's Casablanca but Shawshank is top 5 for sure. It has really stood the test of time.
I watch a lot of reaction videos of Shawshank, because I just love it when the Warden puts his whole arm through that poster and the viewer REALIZES! It's almost as good as watching it again for the first time. There are a couple small, cool moments that I didn't catch until I had watched several times; when the Warden is in Andy's cell the first time, he holds the Bible that contains the hidden rock hammer! And at the end when the Warden has the Bible again, reads what Andy wrote in it, and opens it to the section that has the cutout for the hammer, it opens to EXODUS! There are probably more cool moments I haven't noticed yet.

The movie was filmed in the states at the Ohio State Reformatory, a real former prison. I got to visit this summer and stand on the staircase Andy and the warden walked down, and sit at Norton's desk. I hadn't seen the movie at that point, so I made sure to watch it as soon as I got home from my trip. A masterpiece I should have watched a long time ago!
This is my absolute favorite movie of all time. I had the fortune to meet the director at a film festival a few years ago (which was also when I first got to see this movie in the cinema; like most people, I completely missed Shawshank when it first ran). It’s a rare thing to be able to shake the hand of the person who made one of your favorite things!
You can now say, I've seen a proper movie! Saw this movie years ago through the advice of a video shop manager. This movie like many other fine movies are the ones that should have won oscars, but didn't. At the time no one knew of this movie, just that as word of mouth spread, its become an all time classic. Have to say what makes this movie is the Stephen King script together with some greart movie stars. Mostly all of todays movies lack a good script and you know the end before you even start to watch. This movie was the exception and that is what makes it so good. From scene to scene, you never can guess whats going to happen next. Brilliant.

Reminded me of how I felt seeing this in the cinema in 1994. At the end, the whole audience just sat there for 5 mins crying happy tears. Never seen anything like it before or since.

Not to mimic everyone else’s posts here but it’s hard not to. Very glad you watched this epic film. I haven’t checked it recently but the IMDB rating on this film was over 9 and it was the number 1 highest rated film in their database for years! I can’t imagine modern day Hollywood producing masterpieces like this again anytime in the near future.

Like I tell most reactors. The redemption story arc isn't really about Andy. Its about Red. Because the biggest change in the movie as it follows (and narrated of course) is Red!
One perspective that was intentional was when Brooks left prison, the camera is pointed at him with the prison in the background. It means he was truly stuck there.
When Red left prison, the camera is behind him walking him out. Because the institution is its own character. And Brooks was stuck there. Institutionalized. But Red has redemption and found hope in the end. Andy was brilliant but also one of the best of friends. He gave Red a purpose after prison (even if it was a simple as meet me in Mexico and help me restore this boat).
Always blows my mind that the tall, blonde main guard, is the voice of Mr. Krabs in Spongebob.
I love it that you didn't predict that the poster was hiding a tunnel. I didn't put it together on my first watch either and the pay off is better that way! I'm not ashamed to say that I didn't see it coming at all! I was so worried about Andy's other problems that I never even slowed down to analyze what the poster was doing there.
This movie gets me every time. It’s so beautifully written and acted.

IMO, this movie is the GOAT.
Legit one of my top three favorite movies of all time! A perfect movie in my opinion, I will cry at least three separate times no matter how many times I watch it
Hope and salvation are the underlying themes of the Shawshank Redemption, and, of course, the Bible is the ultimate source of hope and salvation for all men, which is why the Holy Bible is a another recurring theme throughout the movie. (It is no accident that Andy conceals the rock hammer, which is the instrument by which he achieves his escape and wins his freedom, within the pages of Exodus.) By the way, the redemption is Red’s, not Andy’s. It is Red who has lost his hope and faith in mankind during his long years of imprisonment, and in whom hope needs to be rekindled.

One of the greatest films to ever come out in the 90’s. The 70’s, 80’s and 90’s have put out so many great films that have and in my opinion, will always stand up to the test of time.
Another film I would recommend is Escape from Alcatraz (1979), starring Clint Eastwood and A Perfect World (1993) directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Kevin Costner.
