    I just broke out my SB900 after it had been sitting unused for the last ten years or so. It wouldn't power up so after watching this video, I gave it a few good smacks on all sides with the palm of my hand and it powered right up! I always hated this flash...overheat errors after a dozen flashes constantly, even at low power. The SB800 is a far superior unit.

    Your a lifesaver! Just hours before a wedding I was able to use your guide to open my flash and repair the zoom bracket which had become loose.

    Shaun Price is absolutely right. The first thing you should do (before starting to disassemble the flash) is to set the bounce angle to 90 degrees, remove side rubber and side mold (the one on the right as you see it from behind) and discharge the main condenser through a 200 Ohm to 2 KOhm resistor inserted into the two holes revealed… The rest you can find in the manual which is online.

    My SB-700 wouldn't power up on a shoot yesterday. (Thankfully I have extra EVERYTHING)
    I was going to get into it today, and I found that Nikon uses 'tri-wing' screws. (which I have never heard of...let along own)
    *It's ALWAYS something!*

    You should ALWAYS start with discharging the main capacitor if you want to avoid getting an electric shock.

    How would you replace the battery components if destroyed by oozing batteries?

    Great Video, but it seems mine is a different problem,
    when me n my friend was on the bike riding,he accidentally dropped my SB 800.
    now it wont fire,but i can turn it on and cycle through menus.
    my dad would freak out on me if he finds out.
    Do you think i should send it to service ?
    or
    What do you think ?
    THANKS

    The skip in the middle skipped the part I needed... how to get the bottom half separated... was removing the top half necessary?

      I still don't know the answer to this, but this is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!!!!

    • @mski349
      @mski349 Před 5 lety +3

      The 4 hidden screws (below the flash turntable) and the 4 screws at the shoe are all you need to take apart the bottom piece. Once removed, the two parts come apart with a little prying. To remove the circuit board to access the lcd screen and battery compartment you have to remove two (obvious) screws and then do some un-soldering unfortunately. Best of luck.

      @@mski349 so just to be clear, to take apart the bottom piece (that has the main control board) only the four screws underneath and the four that are accessible by turning the flash +/-90 deg?
      Ie no need to open the upper flash assembly?

      @@mynameisben123 it’s been a couple years now (and I no longer have the flash) so I’d have to defer to my own comment. Looks like 8 screws is all you need to undo.

    @ShaunPrice Před 10 lety

    I would not advise anybody that does not know what they are doing to try this. There are much easier ways of pulling the flash apart - see the repair manual. You also came very close to getting your hand across some terminals that are connect to the capacitor. It could have been charged to 320V and given you a very nasty surprise. I just repaired an SB-900 and after 6 weeks of being off the capacitor was still at 100V. I obviously discharged it before proceeding.
