  • Today I'm painting a Snowy Owl with Acrylics! This is one of my favourite winter birds I get to see here in Manitoba. I want the Owl in this painting to be almost ghostly, but with its black spots and strips, and bright yellow eyes bringing strong contrast to the mostly grey scene. I'll talk about some of the process and subtlety of the colours that will go into painting this beautiful Snowy Owl. Enjoy!!

    I wished that you would inform us what size brush did you use exactly and what colors. I know you briefly said a couple of colors, but that was it. I know that’s a round brush, but I don’t know what size it is that the only brush that you used? I love the painting.

      Thank you! And I apologize that my earlier videos didn't include colour mixing or my brushes. Most of my new videos include that and would hopefully be more helpful. For this Snowy Owl, if I remember correctly, I was using Mars Black, Raw Umber, and Titanium White - which I would make a slightly brown tinted grey. For the eyes it was Cad Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, White, and Raw Umber. My brushes would range from Round 3, 4 or 5 for blocking in, and anything from Round 0, 1, and 2 for the finer details. Here's a link to where I get my brushes from.

    How do you get your canvas so smooth? Or what are you painting on? Also, what kind of brush do you use? Thanks :)

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  Před rokem

      I'm painting on hard board, sometimes called masonite that I prime with gesso and then sand smooth. It's a great surface for getting nice fine details. I am planning on making a video in the future about how I prepare the boards for painting. And as for my brushes, I'm using a round 4, 2, 1, and 0. I have another video where I go over those things in better detail if you want to give that one a watch!

      Thank you! Yes, I used a Round 4, 2, 1, and 0. I have another video that shows more about those brushes and how I use them.

    Do you have a traceable for this painting? He’s gorgeous! Thank you!

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  Před 5 měsíci

      I don't have a traceable for this owl, but I still have the outlines for it. So I'm going to look into scanning it and seeing if I can create some kind of a vector image that you can use. If you send me an email on my website, I can let know if I can come up with something.

    What size canvas did you use? You are awesome! Are you in Canada?

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  Před 9 měsíci

      I'm using 18 x 30" piece of masonite that I've primed with gesso and sanded smooth. And yes, I am in Canada! And it's always exciting when I see the Snowy Owls return in the winter!

    How did you do the outline of owl and black feathers?

    • @JosephKoensgen
      @JosephKoensgen  Před 6 měsíci

      I transferred it from a drawing onto a piece of tracing paper, and then onto to the board. I will sometimes draw it directly on to my painting, but this way I can move it around a bit if I'm not exactly sure where I want it, and need to balance it with other elements in the painting.

      I didn't film these particular branches. But some of my future videos will be about how to paint branches in the background.
