  • Cardiff Bay Barrage 25/03/2017
    Hello and welcome to another video. In this video there are no trains - instead we see the Cardiff Bay barrage in action to let two vessels into the bay. I hope you enjoy and I'll hopefully be making more videos here in the future.

    Brilliant! I was hoping that this was going to be recorded again soon. These bridges are really cool. I see the bridge controller might have had some problems closing the road off at the start because of all the people crossing at that time. I love the alarms, wigwags and swinging gates though. Great video. C:

    I've never seen a level crossing used on a drawbridge! It has nice Klaxon alarms, although Network Rail should probably fix the sensors!

      Network Rail don't own these crossings, they only own and maintain infrastructure relating to the railway. I like the alarms too. Thank you!

      The drawbridge isn’t automated either its controlled by someone in a room

      They’re E2S A100 alarms, and there’s a signal box right next to it which controls it. The signaller probably didn’t keep his finger on the button long enough.

    Thanks for sharing. Pity all the idiots who thought flashing red lights do not apply to them were not heavily fined for flagrently ignoring the warning, if it was down to me i would have flipped the bridge with them on it.

    Kind of stupid how both sets of barriers go down at once.. shouldn't it be entry side, 2 second delay, exit side?

    • @Eddiecurrent2000
      @Eddiecurrent2000 Před 4 lety

      Nope, they're not automatic, they only lower them once the bridge is clear, thus no need to lower in steps.

    What’s The Difference Between Railroad Crossing’s Signal And Drawbridge’s Signal

    • @SouthCoastLevelCrossings34
      @SouthCoastLevelCrossings34  Před 6 lety +1

      The main difference between the signals themselves would be manufacturer. Most level crossings have LEDs made by Unipart Rail, and the barriers are mostly made by SPX (I think). Drawbridges can have any mixture of types and manufacturer of lights and barriers.

    Are the 2 sections ever lifted at the same time and if so is it possible to be 'stuck' between them when they do?

    • @SouthCoastLevelCrossings34
      @SouthCoastLevelCrossings34  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Mark! Thanks for the question. I have asked one of the attendants here this question before. They said yes, it is entirely possible to raise two sections at the same time. In the video, the locks extend to the right, and pedestrian areas are built between each one. If two bridges need to be raised, pedestrians can move into these areas. There's almost no road traffic as access is restricted. Hope that helps!

    • @markwright3161
      @markwright3161 Před 4 lety

      @@SouthCoastLevelCrossings34 It does, thank you.
      I just like the thought of being between the bridges when they're lifted, although when I first commented I thought there were only 2 sections with a piece of road fixed between. I've since realised that there's 3 sections and no road between (what I thought was static road being the second of the 3), so you couldn't drive a car half way across and see 2 raising from that perspective, one in front and one behind. I imagine it technically would be possible if sections 1 and 3 were raised, but for safety they'd probably avoid it, easier to give them 10 seconds to finish crossing when driving.

    So... if there's two drawbridges right next to each other, then why do they need two sets of signals? Why not just close off the entire area in case another boat comes through?

    • @SouthCoastLevelCrossings34
      @SouthCoastLevelCrossings34  Před 7 lety +2

      Craig Baker There are actually three separate drawbridges here, each with their own set of signals and barriers - the reason for which I'm not sure of. I'll see if i can find out

    • @tylerjames2722
      @tylerjames2722 Před 6 lety +2

      Hi, there’s three sets of bridges, each allowing access to one of three locks. There are two areas (one in between each of the locks) that are open to the public. The counterweight (large cylinder behind the bridge) actually swings down to ground level in front of this area and completely blocks the access point that also has swinging barriers.
      So not to prevent people from leaving the other unaffected area, they have staggered crossing barriers. So in reality the close the entire area between the signs saying 1+2 and when needed 2+3 including the road between.
      At the end of the video you can see a person leaving this area to the left of the road once it opens :)
