Why Switch OLED Model Was Kept Secret For So Long

  • Nintendo's long-awaited "Switch Pro" is here, in the form of the Switch OLED Model. No, it's not quite the device that fans were hoping for - there's no 4K out, and no faster processor - but there's no denying that this device is exactly the new Switch model that Nintendo claimed did not exist.
In an investory meeting earlier this year, Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, insisted that there were no plans for a new Switch model. Lo and behold: a new Switch model. Turns out there were plans after all.
In the meantime, Doug Bowser, master of the bluff, has been dodging questions about the Switch OLED Model for years now, effortlessly beating around the bush whenever the topic of a new Switch model - most often the rumoured Switch Pro - comes up.
To a certain extent, it's true that this isn't a Switch Pro; rather a device with a slightly better screen. So why not admit that? Why, instead, insist that absolutely no new Switch model was on the horizon?
Well, in this case, admitting that an additional Switch option was on the horizon may have been detrimental to short term hardware sales, and that's not something Nintendo's overseers are keen to encourage.
    Lots of love,

We’re not getting a switch pro until the technology is there to make a switch pro and it be cheap. Nintendo was literally saved by weak hardware, and cheap pricing their consoles. The fact that people think Nintendo right now will make a pro that would HAVE to compete with both the ps5 and xbox and not have only heavy backlash by the family community (their main demographic) but people probably won’t even buy the switch pro because now it would be a numbers game which will end with people going for the ps5, xbox, or any handheld pc thing you can buy on the market now.

It's probably best not to call what they did announce a Switch Pro. The Pro implies some level of upgrade to the CPU, GPU, and/or RAM. While the Switch Pro rumors included the leaks about the screen and the kickstand, those details were only part of the Switch Pro rumors because they were assumed to accompany an internally more "powerful" system, which did not end up being the case.

Pro doesn't imply an increase in computing power. It's a mere marketing term that's been popularized recently by Apple and Sony. In the end they can call it whatever they want. Personally I expected a dumb name like "New Switch" or "Super Switch" for this.

Well, they didn't have plans to announce a new model - at the time of the investor Q&A. It's a bit of slight of hand, and something we've come to expect from Nintendo - but since it's been a few months since then, I'm a bit hesitant to call it an outright lie. Doug Bowser had the better approach though: Instead of outright denying it, he just avoided confirming it. What do we expect? For them to just tell us about it before they've planned to announce it? What would be the point of the announcement if they just casually confirmed it earlier?

This is just a bit more than the standard hardware refresh akin to the 3DS XL, while I think we can still expect a more powerful model next year. 1. Having good battery life in handheld mode
    2. Waiting for technology to become cheap and available enough ; as well as powerful enough to employ in a mobile form factor
    3. The current model is dying down in sales

It's a well-done video, but the premise itself is kind of silly, and I think saying that "the truth is underrated" undermines the reality of how businesses work. Companies announce products on their own schedule, when they are ready to be announced, not in response to interview questions or rumors. A half-assed 2020 announcement of "We will have an updated Switch sometime in 2021" could easily backfire with reduced sales (as you noted) or disappointment when the final product doesn't match what people are imagining. It's better for Nintendo (or any company) to announce the product when they're ready to announce it, and not a moment before. That's not "lying"; it's marketing.

I have to wonder if the Nintendo Switch OLED Model was going to have a different CPU but Nintendo had to adapt to the CPU situation. This Model is the result of Nintendo not being able to secure another CPU, it's a stepping stone towards what comes next, which I predict is not a new device but still a model of the Switch.

Occam's razor in a nutshell: all probabilities are 50/50 because 49% is PROBABLY a miss, so always bet on black, gambler man.
In the adult world we practice nuance. It's good to consider things like shortages, and in this case the reality is likely this: Nintendo just acquired a bunch of suppliers to make their PoC going forward, and by now 7 inch oleds simply benefit from economics of scale more, and are the cheapest thing to get. ONE older panel is cheap, but 30 million would get increased management costs so it's better to bite the bullet and START with the high expense for more quality.
Same with RAM, 3 gig modules or whatever they use on PoCs are obsolete, and one module leaves more room inside the casing, so they now use either 1x4 or 1x8 gigs of RAM like in the devkit, instaad of 2x2 or 2x3 for 4 and 6 gigs of RAM.
Also, price drops are not a given or some consumer right. In reality prices would tend to go UP so you better invest early, and the adjustment as price drops only exists because the whole world is out-competing the one product that loses value. The whole world now is NOT.

The way i see it is it was hyped up by rumours. Its not a switch pro, they never advertised it as such. It's the switch oled model. Most switch owners won't get it. However, i see it as a device for newcomers and for those who's switch is either old or very worn. For example, I'm thinking of fixing the drift on my switch which i got on launch then selling it. Then i might buy the newer model with birthday money and whatever money i get from selling my switch. I would never buy it flat out though. Also, one other thing, i feel like people's expectations are too high. People who wanted a 4k resolution are kidding themselves. I will accept that better fps and Nintendo fixing drift themselves are changes that they should have added by now though.

the moral of the story is. Marketing is not as easy as one thinks and with the constant leaks and rumors, it makes it hard for a company to keep their stocks intact and in a safe spot. Nintendo is the only one of the big three which relies solely on their video game and video game hardware sales to stay profitable. Xbox has the giant cushion of Microsoft, and Playstation has other Sony electronics, Sony Pictures, etc. That's why traditionally, Nintendo models have always been underpowered compared to their competitors-- they have to make a profit from day one, while their competitors often sell at a loss just to get people in the door. There is zero incentive for Nintendo to make a more powerful model right now because 1) The hardcore gamers make up a much smaller proportion of their customer base than the other big two, and 2) As the console ages, their profit margins on the hardware increase, since the tech becomes cheaper to manufacture over time. This is especially true given that there's already a massive shortage for high end chips. The Switch is still selling very reliably, so there's no financial reason for them to make an upgrade.
