      Thanks. Check out also czcams.com/video/wCuEUIuTalQ/video.html and czcams.com/play/PLUa-WwS_7GQw_lkmslAev1j8oVrArvQQg.html as they feature sound devices originally supported by the game.
      I wonder how many SC-55 owners did use the MT-32 emulation mode for games back in the day as the emulation worked in limited games only?

    I say they all illuminating evenly; and very brightly, upon my path through cRPGs.
    Thank you, Richard - Lord British!

    •  Před 3 lety +2

      As Ultimas, they probably are. Personally, U6 was great for bringing in new PC players with 256-colors, AdLib-soundtrack, single-scale world, etc. not accustomed to the more crude graphics of the previous ones on, for example, the C64.

      Do many people really say 3 is better? I could see people saying that about 4,5 and also Black Gate, but I did not think 3 was held as highly as those.

    • @Will-xk4nm
      @Will-xk4nm Před 3 lety

      @@suchiuomizu There are people who love Exodus the most. 3 is in many ways the most influential of them all. But I think the vast majority of players prefer 4, 5, 6, 7, or 7 part 2 the most.

    • @Apple2gs
      @Apple2gs Před 2 lety

      Back in the mid-80's, on my Apple II, I started with Ultima II (instantly fell in love with the game!) and progressed through Ultima III, IV and V. They never did release further Apple II versions--the ORIGINAL platform for the game, and many of us felt betrayed having never got the chance to play Ultima VI and up on our Apple II's. Maybe that's part of the reason there's biased against the U6? Or maybe because the game design and engine changed drastically? (there WAS a unique charm to the very basic design of the older versions that I can even appreciate even today!). Bit of trivia, while no 8-bit Apple II version of U6 was planned, a 16-bit Apple IIGS version was, but unfortunately got canceled.

    • @pelimies1818
      @pelimies1818 Před 2 lety

      @@Apple2gs VI was graphically advanced to it’s predecessors, but VII was insanenly heavy. It killed my HD, spinning it constantly, and I spent top dollars to get a machine that could mediocrely run it. The feel of the game really affeected badly by this.
      So, even VI would have made to AppleII, VII would definitely not.

    Ah Ultima VI the very first game I bought with my own money. 75$ + tax in 1990 and to this day still worth it. :)

    •  Před 4 lety +1

      I had my friend's copy and a Xeroxed map back in 1991. Luckily it was winter holiday as we played this from morning to late evening using a walkthru from a computer magazine. Got the box plus the clue book now later.

  • @rpengler1

    I only had a SoundBlaster when I played this back in the 90s. Quite a treat to hear the midi tracks. As for the game itself, it is massive, even by today's standards. I know I never got 100% of the content. This was also one of the most intricate games out there until ES4 oblivion was released, making it the king for over 25 years in regard to flexibility.

    •  Před rokem +1

      Same here, only had a Sound Blaster with my first U6 experience. I remember trying earlier Ultimas on our C64 but couldn't get involved with them. U6 on a VGA 386+SB did the trick.

    • @rpengler1
      @rpengler1 Před rokem +2

      @ Also, of all the ultimas, U6 was the only one I completed. U4/U5 is brutally difficult. U7 and U8 I wasn't really able to get into either of them, and we do not talk about U9. The first time took me about 2 months real-time.
      The second time took 3 in-game days :P
      Were you also able to kill Lord British?

    •  Před rokem +1

      For U6, we had a general walkthrough from a magazine. I think it took us one holiday week to complete U6. We were stuck for a while as the walkthrough mentioned that the cube is in a cave south of Minoc and we just couldn't find it from cave Covetous...
      Nope, of course tried. Didn't know that killing LB was a thing back then.

    Just awesome.. love it! Thanks for posting :) Spent a lot of childhood hours playing through Ultima 4, 5 and 6. Origin was on the top of their game. It was a tragedy that they sold out to EA.
    Listening to this I am also reminded of Ultima Online as it used a lot of the music.

      The SoundBlaster OPL versions of these songs are engraved into my musical memory also as Ultima 6 was my first real Ultima experience. PS. Just recently uploaded the soundtrack for the original Ultima Online client (@playlist?list=PLUa-WwS_7GQxwW9mS7NTJQ3AnmTR05pAN). Ultima 7 and 8 are also quite prominent there.

    ultiima vi was composed to be played on a real MT32 and in some parts it sounds very different from the original using sc-55 emulation.

    •  Před 9 lety +9

      Some sources even state that the music was primarily composed for the Adlib Music Synthesizer card. One of the most notable difference is at 5:50, melody line in Character Creation. The patch chosen for emulation is almost inaudible compared to the MT-32 version czcams.com/video/eN6Qi919Td4/video.html&t=1m1s

    • @barbarianbros
      @barbarianbros Před 7 lety +6

      SC-55 MT-32 emulation is only partial. It lacks the internal memory and 'programmability' so no custom patch/partials can be used...
      It only have a stock soundbank which émulate the basic MT-32 set of instruments.
      SC-55 is an expander (it plays a sampled sound with frequency variation and effects) when the MT-32 is a synthetiser (LA substractive synthesis, in which each instrument is defined by an attack patch and up to 8 partials).
      Many games that supports MT-32/LAPC-I/CM-32L/CM64... uses custom patches and could not play correctly with SC-55 or other expanders.

    •  Před 7 lety +8

      This is very true. Still the emulation works here quite good as U6 uses only those MT-32 stock sounds and no custom patches.

    • @kevinfishburne
      @kevinfishburne Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah. I have two MT-32's, a CM-32L and an SC-88 which also has some compatibility modes, and it is true. Also apparently there were two versions of the MT-32, one which was extra noisy in order to boost the signal strength and another with cleaner sound but less amplitude. Shit to watch out for. :)

      Very late reply but the Ultima Underworld 2 soundtrack evoked similar feelings to Ultima VI's dungeon crawling bits for me. Complete with (more gradual) build up to epic sounding theme. U6 Dungeon epic section hits hard and fast. :)
