Goalkeeping is highly technical and Neuer's greatest strength is his positioning. He is always in the right place. He knows when to advance and when to sit back. His reflexes ARE outstanding but its his ability to know where the ball will be that is his strength.

He was injured almost one year. Nobody should expect, that he performs like a hero after this injury, especially since he hadn't practiced in over a year, so of course thats why he was’nt world's best goalkeeper since 2016 ;D But that does not change the fact, that he influenced his position (goalkeeper) in this decade so far. By the way I don’t think that he’s getting bad just because he’s old. Goalkepper often hold their niveau longer than outfield players. Look at Gigi Buffon, Petr Čech or Dino Zoff, who became world champion in the age of 40. Neuer is „just“ 32. So in my opinion, he’s still world class and just needs more time and practice to regain his old form.

Neuer is one of the best goalies of the last decade - if not the best. He was injured for a year lately, that's why he isn't seen as the best right now but he can get back to being it. At the end of his career he'll probably go down as one of the best ever along with Buffon, Casillas, etc etc.
I didn't say he'll definitely go down as the one best ever, did I? Also I'm not a fan of comparing someone from the 50s to someone from today. The game has changed too much for that. Doesn't work with Pele and Messi, won't work with Yashin and Buffon, Neuer or whatever goalkeeper from today. Instead of constantly trying to find the best one ever on every single position, try to just enjoy the best of each generation without the childish urge to compare.

I mean saying "he hasn't been the same" is quite a stretch imo. He's dealing with shitty defenders in the club and in the national team right now. When things were still going fine for Bayern, he has made some insane saves as well. He made two mistakes in the last games but he always had his occasional blunders during his career. He's the last one to blame for the defeats Bayern and Germany had to suffer in the last weeks/months.
There have been plenty of great keepers, with great reflexes on the line, but what makes neuer the goat is how he changed the way his entire position is played. Pre neuer a keeper (like Kahn, lehmann or casillas) would stick to his box and make a goal kick sometimes. Neuer is so good with his feet, he’s playing like an extra defender intercepting long balls 20-30m away from his goal and when in possession he participates in the build up, playing precise balls and throwing the ball over 60m. Some people even claim he would have been a solid midfielder if he wasn’t in goal. Today it is required by every keeper to be able to participate in the game like neuer. That’s a legacy, he changed the way football is played, not many can claim that.

The thing with goalkeepers is that every goalkeeper has some highlight worthy stuff, but the best are consistent doing it but that is very hard to capture in some highlights. If you watch some general goalkeeper highlights you will probably see some better and more insane saves than those, but that is because that might be a 1 in 10000 save for a worse goalkeeper than Neuer. Neuer is not just one of the absolut best goalkeepers in terms of stopping the ball on the line (there are others that are very good at that Buffon etc.) but he is also an incredible active goalkeeper that sometimes covers half the field if his team is far forward. Taking the whole package with Neuer there is nobody even close. Btw Germany is known for some of the best goalkeepers, Italy on the other hand has the best defenders while Spain usually controls the midfield. :P
Yeah, Neuer is extremely valuable as a sweeper allowing the team to be more aggressive going forward. This was back in 2014. Injuries and age have taken some of that away, though. He's not even the best German goalkeeper anymore. Barcelona's Marc Andre Ter Stegen is now generally considered better. Hard to measure him against all time greats, as Peter Schmeichel still setsbthe tone followed by the likes of Lev Yashin, Gordon Banks, and Iker Casillas, as others have pointed out.
Emmanuel Enyinwa I really cant agree with you putting ter Stegen above Neuer. He is just back from injury since July and is still at least even with ter Stegen. Ter Stegen had an incredible season in Barcelona last year but Neuer had at least 10 evenly strong seasons in a row. Ter Stegen is the man of the future for sure (:

Not a bayern fan, and not German, but yes, Neuer has been the best goalie for the past decade and he's one of the greatest goalies ever, among greats like Buffon and Casillas.
He is definitely one of the best goalkeepers we as Germans will ever have but now he has a little down because of two injuries he had. You must watch him playing in real life he could definitely play midfield also because as a goalkeeper he runs out of the box to make saves for his team.

what im even more impressed with on some of these shots is that he not only gets to the ball to deflect it, but he sometimes actually takes the little time he has, to get it actually to the side where its not dangerous anymore instead of just blocking it anywhere
12:00 I'm French and this save still hurts me today xd. It was at the 90th minute when Germany was leading 1-0 in the WC quarterfinals. I think Neuer did broke us all our heart at least one time with a decisive save against our team. Great player !

The hardest saves are these from short distance like in 12:14 or 12:24. The ball is traveling with such a speed. The attacker touches it midair like a master, just enough to give the ball the right direction and without taking the speed from it. Probaly adding some speed. (Footballer are master at stuff like this). Damn hard to even react quick enough to catch these short range dynamides. And Neuer is a Legend.
Finally a goalkeeper, and the best in the world for that matter. Great to see an American enjoying the beautiful game. Great work. You should check out some of the other legends of the game, especially midfielders and defenders. Best passes, best tackles, best passing goals, best counter attacking goals etc. There's still a lot for you to explore.
De Gea has the best reaction saves. Better than Neuer in that area and is as capable in net. Would say hes nr. 1 and Im a Chelsea fan. Hard too admit, but hes the best.
Maybe he isn't one of the best anymore because he missed the entire 2017/18 season due to injury. But in fact, he was the best goalkeeper of the world in the past 5 years. He won the triple with Bayern in 2013 (some saves of the UCL final can be seen in the video) and his aggressive playstyle, which isn't on display here, especially at the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, was revolutionary and got Germany to win the title and Neuer to be voted best goaltender of the tournament.

Kahn was more aggressive one on one (and yes you´re right - he was THE leader), Neuer is great at the open play as 11th field player which often may be dangerous but also he´s good at one on one. You should check out "Oliver Kahn". He´s probably the most famous german goal keeper these days. He was playing for Bayern Munich and there is a good reason, he is called "THE TITAN" :)

In terms of spectacular mind blowing saves, David DeGea the Goalkeeper for Manchester United is great for that. Another current goalkeeper for that is Hugo Lloris. Neuer is the only goalkeeper in recent times to be included in the top 3 shortlist for player of the year in 2014. He's best known for being an incredibly complete athlete who takes on a lot more than most other goalkeepers do, like charging way out of his goal line to clear dangerous balls that usually goalkeepers never even think about. He also is well known to be great with his feet, with coaches saying that he could be an outfield player in the 3rd division in Germany. This is why he has really brought the idea of a "sweeper keeper" to the forefront of world football, but he isn't the first to do it. He might be the most perfect one so far though.

I would definitely say Neuer was the best goalie in the world, as he almost won the UEFA best player award back in 2013, for about 8 years. He really did set a new standard of what a goalkeeper could do. Not only were his saves on the line insane but he also was a great defender who could make interceptions from strikers with his feet outside the box.

You need to check out Paolo Maldini. He was a defender, but probably the best, most elegant defender in history. Defo my fav player of all time. Played for the same team for 25 years, at the highest level, until he was 41. Just amazing athlete.
The thing you should really pay attention to is the distance the ball travells. There are some saves that look great but not so difficult because you see the ball miles away. And there are some saves that don't look so impressive but they are incredible because it's a close distance or your vision is blocked by another players body.

Ahnungslos anderen erzählen was sie alles besser machen könnten mit einem starken Mangel an Selbstreflektion diese deutsche Krankheit ist quasi in die Wiege gelegt. Und je höher der Bildungsgrad (zumindest auf dem Papier) desto anfälliger ist man dafür. Was aber nicht heissen soll das Bildung schlecht ist. Es mangelt nur an der, im Möchtegern eloquent, adäquaten also angemessenen Umsetzung.
Goalkeeping is highly technical and Neuer's greatest strength is his positioning. He is always in the right place. He knows when to advance and when to sit back. His reflexes ARE outstanding but its his ability to know where the ball will be that is his strength.

He was injured almost one year. Nobody should expect, that he performs like a hero after this injury, especially since he hadn't practiced in over a year, so of course thats why he was’nt world's best goalkeeper since 2016 ;D
But that does not change the fact, that he influenced his position (goalkeeper) in this decade so far.
By the way I don’t think that he’s getting bad just because he’s old. Goalkepper often hold their niveau longer than outfield players. Look at Gigi Buffon, Petr Čech or Dino Zoff, who became world champion in the age of 40. Neuer is „just“ 32. So in my opinion, he’s still world class and just needs more time and practice to regain his old form.
A goaly is there to annoys the strikers. And Neuer is the man, "the Wall" ......even Gigi Buffon, one of the greates goalkeepers alive, applaused to him after a game. Respect is nothing you can demand.....its given.

Neuer is one of the best goalies of the last decade - if not the best. He was injured for a year lately, that's why he isn't seen as the best right now but he can get back to being it. At the end of his career he'll probably go down as one of the best ever along with Buffon, Casillas, etc etc.

I didn't say he'll definitely go down as the one best ever, did I? Also I'm not a fan of comparing someone from the 50s to someone from today. The game has changed too much for that. Doesn't work with Pele and Messi, won't work with Yashin and Buffon, Neuer or whatever goalkeeper from today.

Without a doubt. He hasn’t been the same ever since his injury, but I’m sure he’ll come back strong...maybe. Some keepers get better with age they say.
I mean saying "he hasn't been the same" is quite a stretch imo. He's dealing with shitty defenders in the club and in the national team right now. When things were still going fine for Bayern, he has made some insane saves as well. He made two mistakes in the last games but he always had his occasional blunders during his career. He's the last one to blame for the defeats Bayern and Germany had to suffer in the last weeks/months.
There have been plenty of great keepers, with great reflexes on the line, but what makes neuer the goat is how he changed the way his entire position is played. Pre neuer a keeper (like Kahn, lehmann or casillas) would stick to his box and make a goal kick sometimes. Neuer is so good with his feet, he’s playing like an extra defender intercepting long balls 20-30m away from his goal and when in possession he participates in the build up, playing precise balls and throwing the ball over 60m. Some people even claim he would have been a solid midfielder if he wasn’t in goal. Today it is required by every keeper to be able to participate in the game like neuer. That’s a legacy, he changed the way football is played, not many can claim that.

The thing with goalkeepers is that every goalkeeper has some highlight worthy stuff, but the best are consistent doing it but that is very hard to capture in some highlights. If you watch some general goalkeeper highlights you will probably see some better and more insane saves than those, but that is because that might be a 1 in 10000 save for a worse goalkeeper than Neuer. Neuer is not just one of the absolut best goalkeepers in terms of stopping the ball on the line (there are others that are very good at that Buffon etc.) but he is also an incredible active goalkeeper that sometimes covers half the field if his team is far forward. Taking the whole package with Neuer there is nobody even close.
Btw Germany is known for some of the best goalkeepers, Italy on the other hand has the best defenders while Spain usually controls the midfield. :P

Yeah, Neuer is extremely valuable as a sweeper allowing the team to be more aggressive going forward. This was back in 2014. Injuries and age have taken some of that away, though. He's not even the best German goalkeeper anymore. Barcelona's Marc Andre Ter Stegen is now generally considered better. Hard to measure him against all time greats, as Peter Schmeichel still setsbthe tone followed by the likes of Lev Yashin, Gordon Banks, and Iker Casillas, as others have pointed out.
Emmanuel Enyinwa I really cant agree with you putting ter Stegen above Neuer. He is just back from injury since July and is still at least even with ter Stegen. Ter Stegen had an incredible season in Barcelona last year but Neuer had at least 10 evenly strong seasons in a row. Ter Stegen is the man of the future for sure (:

He is definitely one of the best goalkeepers we as Germans will ever have but now he has a little down because of two injuries he had. You must watch him playing in real life he could definitely play midfield also because as a goalkeeper he runs out of the box to make saves for his team.

what im even more impressed with on some of these shots is that he not only gets to the ball to deflect it, but he sometimes actually takes the little time he has, to get it actually to the side where its not dangerous anymore instead of just blocking it anywhere

The hardest saves are these from short distance like in 12:14 or 12:24. The ball is traveling with such a speed. The attacker touches it midair like a master, just enough to give the ball the right direction and without taking the speed from it. Probaly adding some speed. (Footballer are master at stuff like this). Damn hard to even react quick enough to catch these short range dynamides. And Neuer is a Legend.
The one from 12:24 was against my team, I remember watching on TV. He sure likes frustrating our fans!

De Gea has the best reaction saves. Better than Neuer in that area and is as capable in net. Would say hes nr. 1 and Im a Chelsea fan. Hard too admit, but hes the best.
Maybe he isn't one of the best anymore because he missed the entire 2017/18 season due to injury. But in fact, he was the best goalkeeper of the world in the past 5 years. He won the triple with Bayern in 2013 (some saves of the UCL final can be seen in the video) and his aggressive playstyle, which isn't on display here, especially at the World Cup 2014 in Brazil, was revolutionary and got Germany to win the title and Neuer to be voted best goaltender of the tournament.
Neuer is 6’ 4”. He is pretty tall which give him a longer reach, but he is going down in soccer history as one of the best keepers ever!

Kahn was more aggressive one on one (and yes you´re right - he was THE leader), Neuer is great at the open play as 11th field player which often may be dangerous but also he´s good at one on one. a very "complete" player at his position. He has it all; strength, agility, speed, exceptionally good at reading the play. No weaknesses. Certainly has a case for best goalkeeper af all time. Right up there with, Buffon, Schmeichel, Kahn and other greats.

In terms of spectacular mind blowing saves, David DeGea the Goalkeeper for Manchester United is great for that. Another current goalkeeper for that is Hugo Lloris. Neuer is the only goalkeeper in recent times to be included in the top 3 shortlist for player of the year in 2014. He's best known for being an incredibly complete athlete who takes on a lot more than most other goalkeepers do, like charging way out of his goal line to clear dangerous balls that usually goalkeepers never even think about. He also is well known to be great with his feet, with coaches saying that he could be an outfield player in the 3rd division in Germany. This is why he has really brought the idea of a "sweeper keeper" to the forefront of world football, but he isn't the first to do it. He might be the most perfect one so far though.

I would definitely say Neuer was the best goalie in the world, as he almost won the UEFA best player award back in 2013, for about 8 years. He really did set a new standard of what a goalkeeper could do. Not only were his saves on the line insane but he also was a great defender who could make interceptions from strikers with his feet outside the box.
Neuer is one of the very best Goalkeepers in the world. He became world champion with the German team in 2014 during the world cup in Brazil. Germany always has very Goalkeepers but Neuer is one of the alltime best.

I would say Neuer is top three keepers in the world. He used to be number one, but then injuries and age slowly started to take affect. Still great, but not quite at the level he once was

At the moment, after 7 matches played, he's ranked 16th out of 18 Bundesliga Keepers. His foot injuries are his biggest problem. He had several mid foot fractures. And the next one could end his career as he said.

You need to check out Paolo Maldini. He was a defender, but probably the best, most elegant defender in history. Defo my fav player of all time. Played for the same team for 25 years, at the highest level, until he was 41. Just amazing athlete.
The thing you should really pay attention to is the distance the ball travells. There are some saves that look great but not so difficult because you see the ball miles away. And there are some saves that don't look so impressive but they are incredible because it's a close distance or your vision is blocked by another players body.

I'd say most shots average around 80+kph? that's 20 metres per second which means that the ball will be in your goal in approximately a second. that means you have a second to 1: see the shot which is harder at a longer distance because people block your sight; 2: to calculate where the ball will go and 3: to dive for it. trust me. it's a lot harder than it may seem. not to mention the curves and other shitty stuff that happens to a ball
most of you act like he said he could easily be the best goaly or that it isn't hard at all. He just said that a ball from short distance is harder to defend than a long distance shot don't know how you can be upset about that not like you know for sure either it's just how he sees it and if you're not a world class goalkeeper you can just state your opinion and tell him how you see his statement.
