- This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The internet is a horror film starring all of us - will we step out of line and create something different? Ondi Timoner (two-time Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner) explores what happens when genius and insanity hold hands to create the impossible. In the future, 40% of jobs may be eliminated by technology - but were you working on your dream anyway?
Ondi Timoner has the rare distinction of winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival twice, for “Dig!” (2004) and “We Live in Public” (2009). She currently produces and hosts the only documentary talk show in the world, BYOD (Bring Your Own Doc), which has more than 150 episodes, and has created an online network for entrepreneurs, innovators and artists documenting the top thought-leaders and doers who use technology to disrupt old paradigms, called A Total Disruption.
Timoner has also directed numerous commercials for such clients as Ford, State Farm, the Clinton Foundation and many music videos for artists including Lucinda Williams, The Jonas Brothers, The Vines, OK Go and Fastball, which garnered her a Grammy nomination in 1998. She is a fellow of the Sundance Institute and the Tribeca All-Access Program, and has been a member of the Director’s Guild of America since 2006.

I completely understand. I only text, Google and CZcams. recently had a job interview and on the day of the I interview the gave me sheet asking for my Social Media usage and information. CZcams was not on the list neither was Google. I simply wrote my name at the top. Handed the slip to my interviewer and with much confusion they asked why. I attempted to articulate my reasons. With the interviewer as I explained more and more confusion came across their face. To say the least I was not offered a job.

Madness does not necessarily indicate genius, but genius most certainly indicates madness. I don’t think genius is attainable to people of perfectly sound mind.
Perhaps the 'normal' or 'sound mind' is the general madness.
Define genius
The most important part of the speech was I guess the conclusion where she says the geniuses she documented make plans but change them with time, and so out of every planned idea an evolved idea better than the last one can come up. The trick is to envision, affirm the facts, and take the impossible challenge head on.

These lectures on genius tend to be fairly two-dimensional in nature. Being different is not genius. It's not even necessarily a good idea to be different. Difference for its own sake is arbitrary. Difference for a reason derives value proportionate to the soundness of the reason.

Soundness is subjective so in all nothing is "genius". Most things are wrong in one way or another until someone shows you what is "right" through their perspective and if it plays true to all aspects that we could test it on, and if enough people agree then the perspective becomes "law" and becomes the "right" way until proven wrong from a certain aspect. Then someone decides to be different again and shows another way to perceive a (reason, statement,object, law of physics, ect.) that still comes to be true to all aspects as we know it. So I do not think they are implying difference is genius as difference is quite stupid but more to just be different as that's how genius ideas are created.
We are social creatures, so we don't measure soundness merely subjectively. But yes, new paradigms become "old" conventions at some point.
True, but thats why I implied that people also test it to any aspects they can on it, like looking at a apple to see what color it is or touching a object to see how hot/cold it is, or using a math formula to check if it comes out to the same answer. I was just stating the soundness of a reason comes from whether that person thinks said reason is a good idea or statement which could differ depending on the person and context it is used in. A man who is lost in the woods would think its a good idea to light a fire to see while one lost in a coal mine would probably think otherwise until he could think of an idea to see that would not get him killed i.e a flashlight.
Not falling in line is genius. Understand what she's saying. Original thought is the only relevant thing we can do as humans.

Geniuses, not crazy people, are running the world, even building the hospitals. If the doctor is convinced you're schizophrenic they're at the ready to continue medicating you. Doctors are insane. Happiness in this world comes when you have more money and possessions, but a talk on genius isn't going to pay the bills, nor does perfectionism give the the perfect opportunity to save up for paying the bills.

I am 57 years of age today and am really really struggling to be able to FIT in the 21st Century. I cant get a job of any description because I cant understand what a 12 year old can do online.

I think I'm in love. What a fantastic message.
What's stopping me from turning that abandoned building into something productive? I don't fucking own it. And the people who own it aren't going to give it to me. And they don't want to sell it. They want me to lease it for $1,000,000 a year. And they would rather see it sitting there vacant, falling apart, than let it go for what it's actually worth.
It is a good point, but not necessarily a debilitating one. That just means that you have to somehow "raise" $1M per year to lease that building. It means getting "leverage" by enticing other people to participate, by telling a good story, doing a lot of planning, and "making it happen". It can be done: symphonies, opera companies, rock bands, and such have figured out how to do this. However, as you and others intimate, it is not something that the average person can do. I would say that _most_ people are not suited to being "entrepreneurs" or "impresarios" or whatever "type" is required to kick off such a project. Also, I'm not sure the owners want to see it fall apart? They are likely busy and distracted (and maybe a little lazy?), and not dealing with that problem (just yet). If they were in dire financial straits, they would have to unload the building, possibly through a bankruptcy process. One option is to keep on the lookout for such unused resources, and possibly bankruptcy auctions, etc. It might be better to buy the building outright with your own co-op, than lease it at an inflated price, related to an arbitrary, unrealistic market price.

The only problem with this talk is the unbelievable absence of rousing ovation interrupting every other sentence.
One small fact she leaves out:
Most of the outside-the-lines, disruptive, crazy ideas... are dumb.
It's fun to cherry-pick a few exceptions for a speech, but let's not pretend we don't realize the cherry-picking is happening.
brotherted I think that's the opposite of what she's saying actually. Once you hold on the idea that most ideas are dumb as you do, you will also apply that to your own ideas, in the process neutering yourself before you get the chance to even bark. Also what is a "dumb idea" for one market, is a life-saver in the other. To put it extremely bluntly, props to Zuckerberg et all for making their money and changing the way many people communicate, BUT Facebook is a really dumb idea. Trade aliases for our real names and then expose our lives on the internet? Where even non-friends can peek in?! Why would anyone bother?? Are you raving mad?!!!!?!!!?!! And yet....the results are in. How about youtube... "People can make videos and then let anyone watch them for free, and the quality will actually be quite good, surpassing the television." Yup. Pure common sense ;)

Just as she cherry picked the rare exception, so have you by mentioning Facebook. Not sure why you consider authenticity, i.e. people's real names, to be an inherently bad idea. I don't. But the main point is that Facebook, CZcams, Tinder, Twitter are not representative of new ideas generally. The point feels so obvious to me, I feel strange even having to type it. The great majority of businesses fail, especially tech.
I think the key to all of this is economic: how does the money flow, to support any or all of these dreams of fulfillment? The working (and earning) people of the world have only so much discretionary spending funds. Only 1 (Mark Zuckerberg) out of 7B has managed to skim off enough from that pool of funds to become fabulously wealthy. Where are the other Facebook(s)? In each narrow market definition there might be 1 or a few, but no where near the 7B people that must be sustained by the "new age" economy. All props to those pioneers (such as Amanda Palmer) who have figured out their own unique way to succeed, but that is not a solution for everyone. IMO we need some better models for "monetizing" ideas and participation: some way to flow some fraction of the revenue back to the contributors and participants. Jaron Lanier in "Who Owns the Future?" pointed out that there is a tendency for all revenue to accrue to (and remain at) the "top level server". As an example, Zuckerberg and Facebook become worth $Bs, but the 1B+ contributors (without whom Facebook would be totally worthless!) get _nothing_ !!! IMO these things would work better if some fraction of revenue could "flow back, down" to the contributors. Then there is a chance for the new digital economies to become self-sustaining, without parasitically subsisting on discretionary spending of "wage slaves". There is always a practical necessity or limit: to pay rent, to buy food, etc. Without obtaining some fraction of the newly created growth due to automation and digital services, most of us will remain "hobbyists", at the same time as having to compete for less and less paying jobs. Tragedy! or opportunity?

What you're missing is the key term she labeled these people as in the introduction: impossible visionaries. Indeed, most fleeting fancies that we conceive are just irrational to follow, and they shouldn't be followed. Yet if a person adopts a vision, a radical perspective in hopes of producing something, only then can this impossible, irrational line of thinking aid them. Moreover, the mad thinkers who ascend in society only do so when they orient themselves towards a goal, a goal that can define the borders of their sanity.

I have an IQ of 165 a BA, PHD, & have 3 business's. And yet I have mental issues, debilitating mental issues, occasional violent issues. Firstly I hate being pigeon holed. I'm socially normal and abnormal. The same as everyone else. I was broke for the majority of my life, now I'm well off. I'm a painter in my spare time. I don't own a TV and have travelled the world. Put me in a box, that no one will understand. I now know I am normal.

The disproportion between normal people and these impossible visionaries are what sustain their importance. If a majority of people became impossible, then the system would morph to being impossible as well. On the other hand, if this disproportion exists, only then can we recognize these geniuses as thus.
