    Thank you, Dr. John. It makes sense now. Why hasn't this understanding been taught to the laity, before? We are hungry for deeper insight from our Church.

    I'm a 59 year old cradle Catholic and I never knew the significance of Moses and Elijah showing up at the transfiguration.
    I loved your conversion story BTW; the one titled 3 reasons why I became Catholic (or similar wording). I've watched it several times over the past few years and have sent it to many people.

    Thank you very much for this clear and great explanation. I went to catholic school up until 9th grade and this is the very first time that I hear the Transfiguration explained this way. Thank you again and God bless.

    I waited for this feast the whole year, but in the end, on the very day of this beautiful feast of Light, I missed all its essence. I was suddenly lazy to pray and to connect myself that day.

    Many things in the Bible have significance on multiple levels. The "Son of Man" seems to be such a title. It not only fulfills messianic prophecy but emphasizes the God took on human nature for our sake. That form is a consequence of (derivative of = "Son of") His great love for us.
    I often see this mistake among theologians. They claim Jesus says something only to fulfill prophecy. But nothing the Lord does is an empty gesture, going through the motions merely to confirm a prediction. The actions have meaning in themselves, even apart from prophecy.

    I'd like to think Christ's conversation with Moses and Elijah was the perfect example of the perfect man receiving intercession from two saints; they, in a sense of their interceding, helped prepare him, and hence the world, for the crucifixion and resurrection and glorification of the Truth.
    I first heard about the Transfiguration as the guide for asking the saints their prayers a few years ago. I only pray the idea isn't too novel, but rather closer to antiquity in age. : )

    Dr. Bergsma, regarding the assumption of Moses, the time honored tradition has been that Deuteronomy 33:21 refers to Moses being buried in the land of Gad.

    The Transfiguration - meditating on this my favorite miracle, I imagine myself in the presence of the three biblical, cosmic royalty, I would be frightened too as the three disciples who accompanied Jesus to Mt. Tabor.

    They were on the Mount because they each climbed their mountain in their respective times to meet with the LORD, and this is the meeting they had with the LORD before they returned down their mountain.
    Moses was slow walking, hearing something behind him about Jesus being said to the three disciples, so when he got back down he told Israel, "A prophet like me will be raised up; 'Listen to Him'."
    You experience the same 'presence' at Mass.

      The apostles recognized Moses and Elijah from their conversation with Jesus, because I guess they wouldn't know what they looked like? So even before the Ascension there were saints in Heaven? In some bodily form?

    Excellent explanation dr. Bergsma. I never understood the meaning of the “Transfiguration” before. Makes sense now, Mose being about the law and Elijah about prophets. Thank you!

    I had taken the experience, for a long time, longer than I can remember when it started, that what the 3 Apostles saw on the Mount was a transcending of Space/Time where they beheld the opposite end of the visions/experiences of both Moses and Elijah meeting with Christ in their own lives. Thoughts?

  • @flyesouisi

    Is there a parallel between Moses' receiving the Law which the people must "listen to," and which soon after was broken, and the Transfiguration?

    • @lindacowles756
      @lindacowles756 Před rokem

      G'day, Lawrence Fortune! I understand what you mean, i.e., the Shema (Hear, O Israel) and "Listen to Him", meaning Jesus.

  • @chete4479
    @chete4479 Před 3 lety +1

    If you take the meaning of Transfiguration as : _Going Beyond Human Body own's limits_
    You can consider then , at least , 5 times Jesus is Transfigurated :
    1)mount Tabor , already seen.
    2) &3) after his resurrection , meets 2 times his apostles reunited , with Thomas later, going through the walls while the doors are closed.
    4) when Jesus walks over the Sea.
    5) according to Maria Valtorta : Jesus is Born crossing through Mary's womb walls to her own hands.
    That's why Mary is Virgin : before , during and after Jesus is Born.

    • @michaelmicek
      @michaelmicek Před 3 lety

      But on point 5, Valtorta's work has been condemned by the Church.
      And I would say she's using an obsolete definition of "virgin".

    Fourth Mystery of Light: The Transfiguration.
    "And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light" (Mt 17:1-2). “

    Because Elijah and Moses will be the 2 witnesses in the future just like writren in Book of Revelation

  • @smeatonlighthouse4384
    @smeatonlighthouse4384 Před 3 lety +1

    There is a two fold reason why Moses and Elijah were at the transfiguration. Firstly, Moses represents the Law and Elijah represents the Prophets and when the disciples were trying to put them on a 'par' with the Lord Jesus by building them 3 tabernacles, then God intervened, covered them with His presence in the cloud and the Law and the Prophets disappeared, leaving the Son of God, Jesus Christ, supreme and the disciples were told to 'hear ye Him'. The Law and the Prophets were given only UNTIL the Son came and they now have no significance as regards hearing from God. We now have 'the Word' made flesh.
    Secondly - Moses is a type of those who have died, while Elijah is a type of those who will be caught up at the rapture to meet the Lord in the air. The transfiguration is a picture of the Lord coming in glory and those that love Him, meeting Him in the air.
