Jeff Buckley and Gary Lucas (with Gods & Monsters) perform Mojo Pin live at The Knitting Factory, New York on 1st November 1991.
The audio is taken from a soundboard sourced bootleg.
• Gods and Monsters Mojo... - Hudba
The evolution of this song was extraordinary. Gary gave it a body and Jeff gave it a soul.
Thank you Gary Lucas for helping Jeff off his feet. Also for some amazing riffs.
It's crazy to think Mojo Pin is this old..
the first ideas are from 1989 UwU

Jeff's voice sounds so fetus on this
I think it sounds like Grace
His hair here 😍 and my favorite song ❤️ so sad I never got to experience seeing him perform. Breaks my heart every time I think about it and his passing. Rip Jeff you are loved by so many still to this day and for many many more.
Jeff later turned this into a masterpiece
So glad Jeff branched out on his own. No disrespect to Lucas' guitar playing, but it feels like its competing with rather than accompanying Jeff's other worldly vocals. The two just dont gel for me. It's like the pairing of peas & bananas, both good on their own, but together an odd fit.
i agree, but i do think the fact that the songs were guitar instrumentals which jeff was sent on tape to write vocal melodies for would account for why its a bit cluttered. but hey jeff wouldnt of had arguably his 2 best songs if it wasn't for this guy
LitAfuseiCantStop nah bro that's my uncle. That's the way the song is meant to be. It's too basic without the extra notes and jeff crafted it originally that way. To alter the riff takes away that avant gourde vibe.
@@hover_roller_balance_boards Gary is your uncle???
You are an idiot.
@@deathmetaldouglas69 hey- is this gary lucas talking? Oh, his friend, got it. Too bad you're such a whiney idiot. Jeff was born to be Amazing. Gary, great guitar playing, Capt Beefheart was amazing.
love the thrash metal ending!!! haha. sorely missing from the Grace album ;)
FYI everyone: he still used Lucas to play these 2 songs on the Grace album
@Randal Clarke Just the ambient effects, I believe. Jeff appears to have played the main guitar parts on those songs.
@@MojoPin1983 I'm just going with Lucas's account in his book Touched By Grace... I mean, Lucas wrote the main riff and chord structure, but idk, this is all according to him. His guitar is so damn out of tune I can't take him seriously anyway
Wow, amazing version&video! Thanks
thank you very much ! great singer and composer...
Thank you for the upload!
The audio is great! Thanks!
masterpiece!
haha I kind of dig Jeff Buckley's long hair back in early 1991. Gary Lucas is awesome.
Wonderful : - )
No use for Gary to compete with a god/ angelic being such as Jeff and a Jeff knew. He is totally still when he goes on his rant but always in the end gracious. Thanks for posting a rare video of beautiful Jeff.
😍
IMO what some comments are referring to as 'competing' or 'competition' is more in the way they're hearing it than what it really is. But what do I know? I'm just a caveman. Your world frightens and confuses me! (RIP Jeff and Phil! I miss you both!)
There's 3 songs I had to cut the video it's on the bettyblue page Gods and Monsters Mojo Pin & Grace and Bluebird blues..
i like this version lol
Gary giving a bit of a Beefheart vibe :p
Totally agree with you, no use trying to compete with Jeff! makes ye kinda understand why Jeff left Gods and Monsters band....Gary is a great guitarist though, but, it's just that buckley was sooooo talented in every way!
Jeff did this better on his own. G&M's band was good but Jeff is freakin' amazing. The band should've been secondary/back up to the singer vs. competing with him. Ego's were obvious with Gary Lucas right in front like that, that's why he lost him.
You re so right. This Gary , even though has an obviously great talent , wants the attention more than anything. I have a strange feeling about him, like a dark nrj with his creepy smile...
Thank you for pointing it out!! Seriously, and he's so into himself that he doesn't realize he's going way too fast, not even feeling the vibe that Jeff is on.
i met him the other day, he was a very nice man and had a lot of amazing stories. he wasn't creepy but i can see exactly where your coming from
The fact that you put the talent-less Marc Bolan in the same sentence as Jeff Buckey speaks volumes about your stupidity. Also for you to project this bullshit about "ego" is utter nonsense. First off Buckey approached Lucas about forming a band as Lucas was in Captain Beefheart and had solo records out on a MAJOR label. Lucas also wrote the best material on "Grace". The main reason they could not work together had more to do with image as Lucas did not have the looks that young bands are often expected to become stars. It's no accident that the other three members of Buckley's band were young and good looking.
I dont know. Gary gave Jeff a much needed break and they were a great collaboration. Gary has stayed true to honoring jeff in almost every performance he's given and never denies the impact of their collaboration. They were a great fit artistically, I think performance wise they complimented eachother but to really truly appreciate their talents they are better isolated at times. This is still a great performance.
is that Jared Michael Nickerson on bass?
Well that was interesting...
Gotta say... this version is awful. The musicians, particularly Lucas, are competing with the voice, crowding it with unnecessary or overly showy parts that do not complement the centerpiece of the music which is Jeff. This song came a long way!
+offisk dahl easy to be critical of this early version when the finished version had 2 years of evolution. interestingly though, all the key elements are already there.
What happen? Did someine momentarilly turn you into a snake (ie. no ears!)The versiom that Jeff and the band were most satified with was the album version. The early versions are still maturing. There is so much more dynamism and lift to the final rendition. No comparison.
BTW, it is not about it being a version that is easy to critique on the basis of time. A work must stand on its own. Some songs lose their vitality in time or re-interpretation. Some fresh takes on songs (like in jazz) are done right on the spot, maybe a second take and then it is off to the pressing company. This combo is like a fine wine ....ready to be enjoyed.
Gary is overplaying and getting in the way of the beauty Jeff is forging. God..... his version is overladden with business and a lack of a coherent continuity. The verse going into the chorus is laughable compared to the final piece. And........ what is that dribble at the end of the tune?
The Grace band had six weeks before they were scheduled to record at Bearsville. Many would agreethat it was time time well spent and they listened to each.. The ´Demons and Neandrathals version has little grace or coheremce, as cited.
This was before St. Ann' Church? I thought he did that and then played around with Lucas
It was right after St. Ann's Church (in 4 month after)
@@heiilig98 About 6 months after St. Ann’s, actually.
No slow, no feel
This must be the worse version of Mojo Pin ever. The loud manic guitar took centre stage and completely took over the song. Jeff's singing was reduced to playing catchup and then drowned out, sidelined and made irrelevant. It's no wonder Jeff Buckley wanted to go it alone.
