  • In this video my hiking plans are disrupted once again by less then ideal weather conditions. While in waterfall country, I try out the OM-5 and 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro lens on some familiar and unfamiliar Welsh trails, experiencing the benefits of a lighter and simpler camera set up.
What are your thoughts on the OM-5 and what is your go-to travel kit?

I use the OM1 and 12-100 when I want to travel light, it's a really nice little set up. The OM1 has a number of extra features, like a higher resolution EVF, better menu system, and a load of other things that I mainly use more for street photography.

Or because you are beautiful young lady with a equally beautiful accent but mainly because you do really explain the process, the thinking, the positioning and why sometimes it doesn't work. • @FierceSleepingDog

    Nice video.
I just got into OM/Olympus MFT cameras and lenses this year. I love the system. I still use my excellent Nikon DSLRs (D500 and D850 with pro glass) for sports, but I reach for my MFT kits for everything else.
The 12-100 f4 is fantastic! A little big and heavy compared to other MFT lenses, but it's a do-it-all lens with very few compromises.
MFT has definitely rekindled my love for photography. The portability, weatherproofing, and computational features are awesome.

I also wanted to thank you for your encouragement and reminders to no compare myself to other photographers and to be persistent. I've recently gotten back into photography after not doing much at all for a few years now. I've had to pretty much relearn photography. But, I have some new gear to move forward with. Just recently got a D750 which I'm loving. Still have my older camera as well, a D7100 which I'm going to keep using for landscapes and the D750 for wildlife. Those are my two passions. Can't wait to see more from you! I hope you have a wonderful new year!

I moved from Nikon to Olympus a few years ago, buying the OM-5 Mk2 and the 12-40 f2.8 Pro lens. Only 16 megapixels and not up to the same stabilisation as the latest version. I gave up using it 3 years ago because the menu system drove me mad. I don’t go out taking photos every week (or month) and I could never remember how I’d set the camera up and what settings I’d given to the various custom buttons.
The lens is so good I’ve kept the camera but it’s been sat in the cupboard all this time. The batteries are dead and I’ll probably need to buy new ones if I decide to start using it again! I take a lot of infra red photos so maybe try that to get out of the plateau? You’ll need that tripod again though.

@ianforber I had the same problem remembering MySets on my OMD-EM5 mkii. This camera however does allow you to assign MySets to the mode dial. So now I set by black and white MySets to the ‘scene mode’ and colour MySets to the ‘art mode’. When I am out and about I then just have to twist the mode dial. I have done the same on my OMD-EM10 mkii. Unfortunately the newer Olympus cameras don’t have the capability to reassign the mode dial…pity.

After nearly passing out, after cutting off my circulation with my D5 and the Sigma 60-600 around my neck, those two items are now for sale amongst other stuff. Keeping my Z7 and F mount 20mm Nikkor, everything else F mount is going. But I have invested in a second hand Lumix G9 with the Lumix 100-300mm attached to it. It's to replace the D5 with the big lens for wildlife. It gives me pretty much the same sort of results and the size and weight difference is incredible. After this brilliant video of yours, (they all are!) I'm now looking at other MFT lenses. I thought MFT was a dying breed but it seems that more and more people, even pros like yourself are looking at these lighter alternatives.

Certainly understand hitting a peak in "the usual" photographs and when that happens to me, I: 1) stop thinking of going out to photograph and instead just go out to walk, hike, explore, etc any area that may be new, brining a single camera/lens along as a hand held, no bag which is only for when you encounter something to remember. Point is not to photograph but to just be out; a refreshing break that's likely to inspire. 2) become inspired by looking at others' outdoor/indoor work, gaining perhaps a different perspective and venue. You do so much in the woods and near waterfalls but what about just the wide open spaces of UK fields and hills? I love Todd Karol's work in the vastness of western Canada and find it inspires me to new and interesting things. I'll look forward to what you explore and interpret next!

I switched from Nikon DSLRs in 2016, needing to lighten the load due to age/health issues. I use an Olympus OM-D E-M1 ii, one of the reasons being the grip is very similar to my Nikons.
If you don't need the OM1s AF tracking features, an E-M1 iii has the grip you prefer plus the OM-1/OM-5 feature set.
I've also recently bought a Nikon Z50 kit which has enough features for me for fair weather landscapes.

After watching you shoot nearly everything with a tripod, it almost looked wrong to watch you handholding a camera for a landscape shot! lol. I know that something like waterfalls is part of your photography muscle memory, but I’m also curious whether you felt a “loss of ritual” or “loss of process” so to speak. There are so many kinds of practices of all types, not just in creative arts, where process and preparation are nearly as important as the artistic act in and of itself. I could imagine that the process of setting up the tripod and situating everything just right could simultaneously be an act that calms and focuses the mind before shooting.
Regarding the OM-5, I’m making a transition to that camera right now. I shot with a Canon 5D Mark IV for the last six years, shooting lots of weddings, events, real estate, and a variety of other genres. Amazingly capable camera! But now that I’m more concerned with having a light kit for travel, hiking, and similar activity, trying something like the OM-5 made sense.
I likewise love the light and small form factor while finding it to be a bit small when using heavier lenses for longer periods. For that reason, I initially traded it for the slightly larger OM-1 only to find that the new focusing algorithms for that specific camera favor action and wildlife photography to the detriment of single AF in medium light with medium-contrast subjects (low light with low contrast and it nearly stops working altogether). I don’t do wildlife, so I had to send that camera back and get the OM-5 again.
I am indeed happy with the OM-5 and find the image quality and color science to be rather exceptional. I’m happy to use it as my main camera but I also recently bought an older generation of the OM-1 to have as a slightly larger secondary camera (specifically the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II). I got a well-used copy for only $410, which made it far easier to justify.
Anyway, it’s exciting to see you trying out the OM-5 and I would love to see more of your work from this camera if you decide to keep it. If you try out the OM-1, I would be very curious to hear your impressions of its focusing in lower light/contrast situations such as much hazier days. Cheers.

Olympus OM and EM MFT cameras are highly under ratedbut hugely capable cameras. Despite having Nikon and Canon full frame cameras and even Leica M digital, I rate my Em1 MKII and OM5 MKII very highly. The implementation of IBIS within these cameras is superb. The other night I managed to take night photograph handheld @ 1.5" exposure using my EM1 MKII and the 12~40 F2.8. With these cameras the only time one needs a tripod is for long exposure photography or when using the high res mode for product or even landscape photography. They are also as versatile as Fuji for doing B&W photography. As for the grip, I tend to agree with you to some extent but an HLD6-G grip for EM5 would solve the problem( These grips come in two bits, the grip and the battery holder ), and there is one on MPB already.

I have OM-D E-M1 II and E-M1x cameras. The latter is the first with live ND, I bought it for that and GPS. It uses two batteries, built-in battery grip. Looks a bit like a smaller Canon 1Dx III. It gives you the bigger body with rounded corners.
The 12-100 lens is offered as a kit lens for this camera, and you get the combined IS.
Both do 80 megapixels on a tripod, it-s 4x the sensor size.
There's also the Lumix G9 II. It lives in the same body as the Lumix S5 II, but you still get to use lighter lenses. It has base resolution 25 Mpx, 100 high res hand held!
I used Canon SLRs since the EOS 650, but I see no reason to use Canon (or Nikon) mirrorless cameras. I want to continue using some Canon EF lenses, the best camera for my with those lenses is the Lumix S1R.
Generally speaking, the choice of camera is unimportant. I use some of the enhanced features of both lines of MFT cameras, so two brands. Lenses do matter, I use Canon TS-E lenses where I can, so the Lumix S cameras. The lenses are manual focus, so there's no concern about AF compatibility.
    Challenges.
I have regularly gone out for a day with one body and a prime lens.
I did a year of "wrong settings." Mostly wide open for landscapes.
I did a year of (mostly) "Nothing to see." Typically featureless wide open spaces, to make interesting photographs.
Recently I have been working on "wrong colour." I am not often happy with the outcome, but the results can be weird.
I often do blur, not your waterfall blur, motion blur, ICM. I got the E-M1x for this. Sometimes zoom blur, that 12-100 is a ripper. Probably the 12-200 too, but I haven't used that.
For the coming year, I intend to do "Out of focus." Not all the time, but some with most outings.
You could go about with two Olympus/OM cameras. That OM 5 is a capable video camera.

I am sticking with DSLRs ... d850 is my primary camera (+d7200 when I need to go lighter) and only what I am considering is to upgrade d7200 to d7500 (because tilting screen + histogram in LV for stills) .. On the other hand I am not shooting any video (vlogging is sacrifice) and I am going out only with two lenses (on FF) - wide angle 17-35 + zoom 70-200 and I have pretty lightweight other gear ... I just don't like mirrorless cameras .. perhaps I am old-school .. looking through the optical viewfinder on my camera is for me an essence of photography that I am not going to change for anything ....

I can see how drone shots would work out well for that waterfall! We didn't give ourselves enough time to explore the area as apparently there is a circular walk with another small waterfall or two. I could just make out another waterfall from afar while driving up the Rhigos Road but figuring out that trail will have to wait for another day. Good luck for your 2024 Pembroke coast challenge, some stunning landscapes along there! Thanks.

Thank you for the video and, as usual, your images are beautiful. I use an OM-5, but I never seem to the problem of the bottom corner pushing into my right hand. However, I tend to support the weight of the camera and lens with my left and and use my right hand to balance the camera and press the shutter. Nonetheless, I do not own a 12-100mm zoom lens and so I cannot say if the additional weight of the lens is a factor. In any event, I hope that you enjoy using the OM -5 as much as I do. Cheers, Peter.

I switched from Nikon to olympus some time ago I found the change hard at first. I still shot Nikon for (film yes still do) you have to work at it the menus drive me mad but for work, I use the olympus (a museum ) and have work blown up to 6x4 feet! you hear a lot about micro 4/3 and shallow depth of field well lots of depth of field for macro is great and the 85mm f1.8 is so sharp. but stick to the pro or prime lenses. and with dxo deep prime I just do not go into sensor size and no one has asked and yes omd em1 mk11 fits the hand better and is a bargain used.
if you want big then a Fujifilm gfx would be my next thoughts.

G9 is a slightly bigger camera than other mfts - the benefit though is in the lenses. I used to use the 12-60 PL and since going back to Full frame (I have and S5 & Eos R) have missed that small lightweight kit so I am hoping to go back, possibly the G9II as I love the ergomics and the usabilty (menus) of the Panasonic system - its so intutive. Get the waterfall thing but don't give it up entirely.. just keep a little space for a couple of the less accessible but beauties we have here in Sth Wales.

Have your seleves a Great seasonal relaxation. I am Seriously. Considering a tilt shift lens. Thing is there are none from Nikon for the z cameras out. I do have a F mount to z but I feel there must be a a z version coming out soon. Well I hope so. Water falls are my first go to once Nikon gets it together.i seriously think that the z 7 ii is really light weight and the adapter for F to z is not that heavy . Prices are really dropping just a thought. I am 69 but my camera bag is always over weight. I have started to just take the 7 .2 out with the z24-120 mm light enough and go back with the z 8 once I have a great day to go reshoot . Seriously the footwear + dress wear needs to be up to the job this weather. Have you any tilt shifts on your watergall before ?..... waterfalls with tilt shift....um ....
I somehow think you would enjoy the results landscape wise .... Samyang do a reasonably priced 24 mm TS .....for F mount Nikon . All the seasons best everyone.

My dad shot Olympus beginning back in the film days and swore by the digital bodies and IS... I'm shooting with the E-M1X now and love it. It IS heavier/larger but I like having the larger grip, as well as dual-controls for the verticals. Sure, there is some noise for the pixel peepers to complain about but shooting hi-res files combined with attention in post-processing really makes it a non-issue. The menu system is a bit daunting in the beginning (even for those of us that have shot Oly's exclusively) but it's worth it in the end. I was amazed by how well the camera IS performed, especially when combined with glass that possesses IS, as well. You've some excellent images and school shall always be "in", I assure you... lol I'm envious of you for having such landscapes (the proverbial grass-is-always-greener adage lol) to hike about. Thanks for sharing!

For the low weight days gear I suggest, ‘Lowprro’s ProTactic Lens exchange’ bags.
For the plateau break step way out of the zone and go urban some evening. The composition rules are basically the same, this time of year the extra lights and an open f/stop make for nice back grounds. Coffee/tea shops are much more plentiful than in the woods and the dance clubs have a bar.

I have a friend who has an OM camera and he loves it though I'm not sure of which model he has. I've been looking at these more compact cameras as well as they travel and carry much easier than the heavier DSLRs (as you've noted) but since I'm in the middle of converting from my old Canon gear to Sony, I'm not ready to make the switch to the more lightweight gear just yet. This is pretty much what I wanted to do, have a light weight camera bag for easier hikes. I use the Veo 42 bag and take fuji cameras. The lenses I take are the Tamron 18-300 F3.5-6.3 and the Tamron 11-20mm F2.8. Pair these with either the X-T5 or X-S20 and you have a great hiking kit, although the X-S20 is not weather sealed. Mind you, the X-T5 has a lovely grip and is so easy to setup with analogue controls.
Great video, always love the whit you throw in to your videos too!

No issues with the image quality. Some lovely shots. It occurs to me that you may get on with the Nikon Z50. It's a very little APSC camera but it nonetheless has a bigger Nikon style grip. You could use it with small APSC mirrorless lenses for lightweight, but also adapt your Nikon F mount lenses when you needed to. Just a thought. The downside next to the Olympus is that it doesn't have in body image stabilisation though.

Lovely..and such so great go get out with your Mom! To me the OM5 looked like a great choice, and while the 12-100 is likely the best all rounder it just seems too big and heavy to me, at least paired with such a small camera. You could likely have a small fast prime like the 12mm (or a Panny 9mm) and then perhaps a light zoom like the 40-150. Yes, the latter is a variable zoom and not that fast but small and light. You would have to change lenses though. Different tools for different needs of course.

bought an OM5 with 12-45 a few months ago when there was an offer on, immediately sold the 12-45 f4 as I already had the 12-40 pro f2.8, ( with OM1) took the OM5 on vacation with OM1 a few weeks ago, and whilst the OM5 is small, light, I found myself gravitating to the OM1 because of the superior menu system, ease of use, better sensor, and handling with the 12-40 - so today I'm packing the OM5 plus a few bits and pieces to go off to MPB, the OM5 is a great capable camera, shame about the menu system differing from the OM1. That said with the money I intend to buy a Sony A74 with a 16-35 PZ f4 as a lighter alternative landscape kit to my OM1 which I"ll just use for wildlife and macro

As a long time Olympus user who's just bought a used Z7ii, it's interesting to see you and Henry Turner trying out OM-5's. My first comparisons have been surprisingly favourable in both directions, the Nikon is a lot lighter than I anticipated, but the Olympus is just so convenient in so many ways; exposure peaking, being able to see the histogram and spirit level at the same time, IS, built-in ND, etc. But in challenging light I'm growing to love the Nikon too, and I'm finding myself spending less time editing the images from the z7 as well.
