The music, the lyrics, the delivery---together they pierce human flesh and find their target deep in the soul. The language of the lyrics is 20th Century, but the message is very Old Testament.

Beautiful use of the sound of silence at the beginning as well as a short bit at the end before the last 2 words. Well if using headphones you can hear the sound faintly ringing in the quiet.

My favourite version of this song, im old enough to remember
when it first came out in the 60s, but Disturbed by singing it slower made the words have more meaning for me. I also love their song Hold On To Memories

I am 72 and do remember the original that was whimsical compared to this one. I had never heard of Disturbed until this song, but now have gone back to listen to all of their other songs and even though I would never have listened to heavy metal, I am not a true fan of Disturbed and make my granddaughter proud. I believe that while some of their fans from their earlier years complain that they hate this side of Disturbed, they now have so many more fans because they had the courage to show how good they actually are. Showing their fun side is this one (czcams.com/video/ZkarGCYk9t8/video.html) and I'm sure you remember the Chipmunks. Another great cover is Sting's Grammy winning "If Ever I Lose my Faith in You" which changes the original meaning of the song from a love song to something that is so important now with COVID. No one does a cover better than Disturbed.

“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence?
It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what.
Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind.
Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls.
Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively.
Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy.
One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”
Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist.
While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed.
Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history.
The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”

David Draiman, an incredible voice!....powerful, controlled, haunting and can go from clear as a bell to vocal fry on a dime and back whenever he wants to. Most people wouldn't realize how incredible his voice is if they haven't heard this......since they are just used to his "metal" vocals. Amazing! If you want a more metal David...try "Dead Inside" with him doing vocals and Nita Strauss on guitar....what a collaboration! Liked your reaction a lot!
Simon and Garfunkel gave a warning we didn't heed... Disturbed is here to chastise us for ignoring it.
Also highly recommend listening to the live version they performed on a late night show. It's an extra bit of awesome.

If you haven't already, watch the live Conan version. This is such a great visual version, the other just shows his raw talent. He had the flu in the Conan version and still nailed it!!

Honestly, with this song, you need to do this official music video and the performance on Conan. That performance is absolutely freaking epic. David was "down with the sickness" (ill, cold, flu, idk exactly) at the time but still gave the performance of a lifetime.
Paul Simon saw the performance and shared it on his socials, a very unprecedented move by Simon. Draiman said that when he spoke to Paul, he absolutely loved it and was very complimentary.

Everytime I watch this video I’m extremely present to his voice and the video BUT at the same time I’m transported to somewhere higher but yet still very deep within my own feelings . It’s the most amazing cover I’ve ever heard . It’s a very powerful warning .

The original was by Simon and Garfunkel in the 60's. The whole Evolution album is awesome. "A Reason to Fight" & "Hold on to Memories" are great songs. The whole album is to bring awareness to drug addiction and suicide. Great reaction 👍

I have been a fan of Disturbed from the start, so it was amazing to hear this softer side to them. But deciding to do a stripped back version was the right one for this song. It allowed them to use David's voice as the tool to build the intensity (and changing emotions - for me, it went from an isolated emptiness to full on anger ... with the instruments each adding their voice along the journey until the vocals and wall of sound are in unified rage ... then ending on a reflective sense of hope at the end).

Simon and Garfunkel...David was classically trained , his voice is wicked...Paul Simon heard this and told David that this was his song now, he was so impressed by his version...this song wasn't supposed to be played. They kind of put it in the trash...some director was doing a movie and heard this...he put it in his movie and it blew up, so they decided to do the song and turned out to be one of Simon and Garfunkels best song, tons of ppl covered it...one of the best cover was done by Pentatonix , I would recommend seeing that version!!
Thank you for your comments, I loved your reaction to this cover, I am a child of the 60's when Simon & Garfunkel released the original in 1964 I was in high school, back then I considered it kind of country-ish, I liked it but the message didn't pierce the soul (okay so I'm 74). This cover by Disturbed along with the video is the BEST it touches your soul and really gets S&G message to the core of my being and many others too, goosebumps and tears every time. "Neon God" in the 60's TV the advancement of technology NOW there is so many more especially cell phones.
Suggestion = The official video by Disturbed “Hold On To Memories” was released Jan 23rd 2020. “Hold on to Memories" is about not only honoring those we’ve lost, but also making the most of our time with those we still have. We are always touched by the stories you share regarding what this song means to you

I skimmed the comments and didn't notice this fact being mentioned but David's voice is considered on of the world's top 100 voices. He honed his skills training in Israel as a classical Cantor. His version is inspired and as much as Simon and Garfunkel's version was good this is ... well, great.
Enjoyed ur reaction, Disturbed nailed this one, they do a great cover of Sting's If I ever lose my faith in you, The Light is one of my Favs from them, Stricken is my fav and you probably heard that one.

There's a version floating around with him and Myles Kennedy singing the harmonies together. It's not particularly my favorite, but a lot of people love it. David has classical training as a Jewish cantor, which is where his musicality, foundation and unique tone come from. Once you know that, you can't help but hear it in pretty much everything they do, even in heavily distorted songs. As to the musicality of the band, go back to the syncopation and time signatures in, "Down With The Sickness" and listen with the ear of a musician.
If you're looking for more on this end of the spectrum, try "A Reason To Fight," "Hold Onto Memories," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," (cover of the Sting song). I like the video versions since many have this same artistic flair.
On the heavier side, "Are You Ready?" "Indestructible," "No More." And an incredibly powerful, but brutally graphic video about suicide, "Inside The Fire," which was inspired by a real event in David's life.
Love me some Disturbed! They are unique!
IMHO... Myles sucks and almost ruins the performance you refer to... just listen to the Conan version to see the emotion of the greatest cover of all time

So many think it's amazing, but while the harmonizing notes are there, I don't think their voices blend all that well together, they're not really in sync and it feels like David has to compete in volume for the melody to be heard, which pushes the vibe in another direction. It sounds better if you listen to what I think is the same performance, but touched up by the studio, probably balancing the volume a bit. I do know others go crazy for it, though, just not really my thing. I figured it was just me. We can start a club. Lol 🤷🏻♀️

I love watching reaction videos of songs that move my soul…However, this cover by ‘Disturbed’ is always stopped for reaction just as it’s building to a new level…99% of male reactors do this, and I have to be honest and descriptive here (wives will understand what I mean🫢)…

I first heard Disturbed on an episode of House of Hair with Dee Snider... Long before anyone in my area even heard of them!
S & G's version was the folk song version. Disturbed's version is today's electronic version with everyone in their own corner working phones, tablets and computers, keeping to themselves IN SILENCE!! The prophesy is coming true!!

This is a cover form Simon and Garfunkel, who owned this song in 1963. David Dramin from Disturbed sings a beautiful cover.
I read that this was the drummer’s mother’s favorite song. It was his idea to cover it, and do it in this style.

If I remember right it was Dan Donegan (the guitarist) that suggested they not go heavy with this one. I’m glad they didn’t. So much more emotion to it.
Also, be sure to watch their live performance on Conan. NOTE: that David Draiman was really sick for the Conan live performance and I heard he was not pleased with his performance, being the perfectionist that he is I can understand why he felt that way. However, the production as a whole was amazing and his performance was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it. So POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL! Thanks, Diane

Nice review. Thank you. Disturbed's version of Simon & Garfunkel's original is the best. Anyone who ever tries to come up behind Disturbed should consider waiting a couple of centuries. Glad you found this version. Hold on to Memories is beautiful and should be an anthem for families.
TArt Garfunkle went to Columbia in New York. He met a guy named Greenberg who loved music an d literature like Garfunkle and they became great friends and soon roommates. One day Greenberg was at a baseball game and his eyes started failing on him. Soon he was completely blind. Greenberg quit school and went home and fell into a great depression. That was your reaction to the first part of the song...well done. Garfunkle visited him often trying to convince him to get back to Columbia. Garfunkle told Greenberg to call him "Darkness" in sympathy. One day Garfunkle took Greenberg to Grand Central Station (10,000 people, maybe more.) Garfunkle told Greenberg he forgot he had to be somewhere and up and left him there to find his own way home (over streets of cobblestone...) Greenberg finally made it back and bumped into someone who said, "sorry." Greenberg recognized Garfunkles voice. Garfunkle was with him all the way home. Greenberg got his confidence back, went back to school and when Garfunkle needed money to get his first record cut, Greenberg gave him his last $400. Greenberg became a wealthy business man and the $400 got Simon Garfunkle's music career started.

I’ve been a fan of Disturbed for the closer side of 20 years now. I’ve always known David had an amazing voice but this song just really made that voice shine. I love watching people react to this as an introduction to them because it opens a door to a genre of music most people have had negative ideas about before. David really brought the song justice and reiterated the point that Simon and Garfunkel tried making 50 years ago. At the same time, he demonstrated the exact reason why I love metal music, especially vocals. The control that a metal vocalist has over their voice is damn near inhuman and David is the perfect example of this.
How can you be a songwriter and not know this song just by hearing the title of the it? It’s a classic.
I heard the reaso Disturbed did this song was because a DJ in L8s Angeles criticized David, saying "he couldnt carry a note if he had to, all he knows how to do is scream" he ended up apologizing after he heard this song.

I have the original version on Paul Simons 'Song Book" which I bought in the UK when Paul visited the folk clubs here. Sung by Paul before Garfunkle made them into a duo. I have always loved this song but Disturbed version is so awesome....I play it often.
Simon and Garfunkel wrote and sang this song in the 1960s. They have a huge fan base that no doubt accounts for the zillions views of this version.

This version of the song is what made me actually listen to it. I am a fan of Simon and Garfunkel, but the original one was always too. . . idk, whimsical? and sounded weird to me, so I didn't pay it much mind. When I heard this tho, I cried, and immediately listened to it on a loop for the rest of the day, and I understood it.

Surprised you haven't watched the live on Conan version. It's cool because you can see the orchestra and for some reason they put this huge timpani drum right beside David! Plus he was sick as hell that night but insisted on going through with the performance. I know you'll be impressed.
the best thing he sang the song so close to the original. didnt really turn it into a "disturbed" song. got some rock added to it but not much

Well the sound of Silence was done by Simon and garfunkel. Disturb did a remake of it and so have several other people. But disturbs version of it is probably the best one I've heard. I'm 40 years old. And I was born in the 80s and I grew up through the 90s. Or should I say I survived through the 90s
His words and his singing about a made-up God of greed blew the song out of the water.

They make it about losing faith in yourself rather than a love song which so many need now with the COVID situation. It is also very good and shows the vocal ability of David Draiman. No one sings a song like David.
