Did you know that every 100 years, Earth’s orbit spins approximately 2 milliseconds slower? Did you also know that the Earth’s magnetic poles are moving? Earth is an incredible planet with many facts such as these. For example, did you know that Earth is not perfectly round? Due to its constant spinning, the Earth is slightly “football shaped”. Here’s another fact for you: planet Earth remains mostly unexplored. 71% of Earth’s surface is water yet we’ve only explored about 5 to 10% of our oceans. Learn more about these and other Earth facts in today’s list. These are 25 shocking facts you never knew about Earth.

They don’t use talc in baby powder anymore since people are concerned about a cancer risk and the fact it’s not good for infants to inhale. Albeit, talc is in most cosmetics but not the unrefined type. The unrefined talc has naturally occurring asbestos. There aren’t enough studies that conclusively confirm a cancer risk for refined talk.

      Yep!
It's scientific name is Luna (which is Moon in Latin). Everything else that is colloquially called "moon" in our Solar System is actually a satellite.
Much like the name Kleenex has become synonymous with facial tissues, any reasonably sized object orbiting a planet is referred to in the context of our own satellite, the Moon. Happens all the time.
(Attention flatearthers: Just to be clear, NO, the Moon is NOT made of Kleenex!)

LOVE your videos and the work you put into them. I am a former science teacher and wanted to point out....our moon does have a name, it's Moon. It's the proper name of it. All bodies orbiting around a planet are called natural satellites and each of them in our solar system have been given names, like Jupiter's Io, Ganymede, Europa, to name a few. Ours is called Moon. Asking, what are the names of Jupiter's moons is an improper statement. It's like your sister's name is Karen so you ask every one else what their Karen's name is instead of what their sister's name is. The proper question is "What are the names of Jupiter's satellites?" and the proper name of our satellite is Moon. :)

Our satellite is not called the Moon, that's the name given to any rock that orbits a Planet. Our Moons proper name is 'Luna', btw our Planet's name is not Earth, that's the brown stuff you grow plants in, our Planets name is 'Terra', hence Terrestrial - of Terra, Terraforming - Changing a Planet to look like Terra

You are quite right, especially in light of the fact we have just "discovered" 65 more "moons" around Saturn! Our Hubble telescope is outstanding, but the James Webb telescope is going to find many more amazing things in our universe, and we've just learned ours is not the only "universe" so that word may have to change also, universe, galaxy, -- well, so far...! If there were some way to find out, we probably know only a minute amount about the skies above us! So much more to learn!

Do me a favor, make a glass of ice water and when the ice melts let me know how much water spills out of the cup. It’s simple physics. If the sea level does rise it’ll be maybe a few feet. But 200 feet is a stretch. Don’t forget that ice has a lot of air trapped in it as well

The moon, according to my understanding is thought to have formed from the debris after a huge meteor collided and combined into what is now earth. This collision is also what is thought to have caused the off axis rotation of earth that allows a climate with minimal extremes and seasons. Seeing as all mass in space creates gravity, much of the dust and debris in the newly created planet's atmosphere combined to make earth's moon.

#8 Mike, you live in one of the best states to duplicate "singing" sand. Go to the beach and slide your bare foot along the surface of the sand. Snow white sand is the best for this.
It might take a few attempts, but you will perfect the speed and pressure and will hear what sounds like how shoes squealed in the hallway back in school.
Matter of fact, try that exact thing with bare feet on a beach.
Avoid Ft. Walton beach though. BAD jellyfish swarm as a child and I'm angry at that stretch of Earth to this day. lol

Not a bad list, although it troubles me that there might be some viewers who didn't know that the moon controls the tides. On another note, the International Astronomical Union has officially designated the name of our moon as "Moon." Yes, it's like giving your dog the name "Dog," but that doesn't make the dog's name any less legitimate, official, or (I suppose) legal.
Now, for a follow-up list of facts about the Earth (note that we stand on earth, which in its aggregate is called "Earth"). First, we have explored the interior of the Earth only to a tiny distance downward relative to the distance to the core. Second, the core is a big, metal, spinning dynamo. Third, there seems to be a subsurface ocean far below the mantle that has more water than the visible oceans. Fourth, the plate boundaries down in the ocean constantly ooze material from deeper in the Earth, and this is the driving force that pushes the tectonic plates around. There are plenty more, but you get the idea: lots of videos about the Earth for List 25 to produce with the ever-popular Mike at the helm.

Pause after 16 really quick just to state that the earth would technically still have tides even with the moon gone. The needed gravitational effect would be supplied by the sun instead, and would be much smaller then what the moon exerts on us.

actually the earth is NOT football shaped. Closer to shaped like a basketball with someone sitting on it. The ends (poles) don't poke out, they are squished in.

One interesting fact , is that the gravitational force of the earth is not constant. It varies slightly depending on where you are. The further you are from its center, the less gravity there is, so if you are looking to lose a little weight, travel to the equator. I guarantee you will weigh at least one millionth of a pound less than you do now, but you better have a good set of scales first! 😆

Need to correct you, According to Neil Degrasse Tyson earth is an oblong shape (like an egg or football) due to the moon and sun's gravity pulling onto earth. Not because of the rotational spin of the earth like you mentioned.
FYI, its because of the moon and sun's gravity is the reason or cause of the earth spinning slowing down.

I think you simplified the origin story of the Moon a lot in this video... The idea is that another planet collided with the Earth an insane amount of time ago and the parts that didn't merge with the Earth flew into space/formed a ring around the Earth like Saturn which was made up of plenty of rocks which, over time, merged and became the Moon... That's the theory I've heard, but most involve a planet hitting the Earth generally...
