Thnak you for this review. It was very helpful in choosing which Bluetooth speaker to purchase. I currently have an older mode Bose (not Bluetooth) and I was just tired of always having to disconnect my phone from the speaker for texting.
I noticed that the JBL brand had very high reviews now it’s a matter of which JBL model. Definitely going for the charge as I will primarily use it at home (and just move from room to room).

With the charge 5(i own one) you can transmit audio through the usb port by putting the speaker in service mode(doesnt damage speaker or reset it), you can do this by holding the bluetooth and play button until the speaker turns off. Than plug into computer (must have power source) and to get out of it hold it again but make sure its still plugged in and has power. p.s the buttons will be unusable in the mode even the power button. I'm good with what I got, especially because it has a 3.5 mm input auxiliary audio adapter. works perfectly with ByDiffer Bluetooth transmitter and Sony mzs1 mini disc player perfect. I'll either have my collections of alternative '90s music on a 5-hour disk or Lo-Fi hip hop, press play and enjoy working on the car or whatever hobby you guys have. Also I'm thinking about getting one of those little HD projectors so when I go camping up in Yosemite we can watch movies with the family and have a sound system that sounds good but that's not intrusive to other Campers or the wildlife. Plus music.

The only problem I have with the charge 5 was the way that they changed the JBL link between generations. You cant connect a charge 5 to a charge 4, not even through the JBL app. You could connect a 4 to any of the earlier versions, but this feature was lost on the five, and has kept me away from buying one. A few of my coworkers and I have charge 4s and will link them together to play music throughout the backroom of the store we work at and we were disappointed to learn that the charge 5 links in a completely different way.

10:30 - Not sure when it was, but the JBL Portable app supports both speakers! With it you can tune the equalizer (albeit only having three sliders for Bass, Mids, and Treble). On the other hand, especially with Spotify, you can easily tune the equalizer there instead. But I can expect people who prefer a general sound that applies not only to Spotify (myself included) so the app is our best bet.
I walk and hike a lot. I had a previous - rather knockoff - speaker that was as big as the Charge 5 and man, I ended up carrying it on my side like a book as the weight was making my wrists sore. Hopefully with the Flip 5 and can happily hold the speakers all the time without the heavy feeling (but still getting that amazing sound). Thank you for the review!
Edit: I ended up getting the Charge 5 instead, but it's not as heavy as I imagined! It's still hefty, yep, but it feels really sturdy and premium. i like that.

About 2 1/2 years ago l bought a pair of charger 3's and they were great when paired together to ger that stereo effect. Sound was great however after about a year of use, they both started to develop that background static problem that l later learnt wasn't uncommon with (some of them)
l often use to drive them full tilt so...oh well.
Not being put off the JBL brand l pounced on a pair of Partybox 300s not long after they were available in store here. Absolutely no regrets there ( in spite of their much larger bulk and weight. (Yes they also pump out great base and volume and on occasion have thrown 1 into the car to use at beach BBQ 's much to the delight of strangers who were also using the BBQ kiosk. (Even better when l've disconnected mine and let them connect up their personal playlists via bluetooth)
I bought a Charge 5 a few months ago which l mostly keep on the bedside table and it's really great if l need to listen to music at a more ambient temperature while in bed.
I'm not an expert on home stereo or sound systems.
My daily headphones are Bose 700s and our actual main sound set up in the lounge is a Sony Shake 77 bought back in the day when l thought BASE was on a par with sliced bread.
Bad purchase! Too much base and things kept falling of shelves and walls when that "thing" was cranked up loud. (Understandably the neighbors would get pissed off and call or nock on the door)
JBL Charges 5s are excellent and PartyBox 300s in tandem beat the hell out of the other "thing".
    Nice review
    Cheers.

At the store, I tried the SONY mini-speaker with extra bass and RGB lights (of the same size as the Charge5), but the sound became horrid when I tried some metal on it (truly horrid... But for bass-y electronic music, it was pretty nice). The Charge5 sounded very nice for both metal and electronic musics (like Tonebox).
Since the store I bought it at was pretty closing when I bought it, I didn't have time to check the Flip.
I didn't notice that the Charge was also actually mainly aimed at also charging a phone.
I was disappointed that there was any aux port.
I was mainly buying it for work to plug it on my PC when I work in the weekends (I wonder if an aux input can be modded in.... Or I could use a Bluetooth adaptor to connect on the PC. It may not be a 5.0 Bluetooth, but it should work enough).
... The sound's great! But an aux would have really completed it.
I don't care about the phone charging option, I keep my phone pretty charged at all time. The large battery is surely used as a power supply for the amp used for the speakers.

I think the mass / portability is the only telling argument for the Flip. The refurb Charge 5 I just bought for 85 pounds sterling on Amazon will be used at home, though, so that’s that.

One important thing - that 20 hours of Charge 5 is at 50% power. At full power battery lasts between 10 and 11 hours. Probably (cos i do not tested that) Flip's 5 endurance will at similar ratios. Moreover, you can recharge mobile using Charge 5 but it is quite weak power (low amp count) so do not expect anything big. It is rather to support your phone (keep it at same power level) when playin music than using it as a powerbank to quickly add some "juce" to phone's battery. If you look at Charge's accu carpacity it is not much bigger than modern phone's (maybe 20-30% bigger) so do not expect any miracles, just a bit "help".

You can pair a flip 5 and charge 5 together in stereo mode, even though jbl says partyboost is only possible, unless they are the same speaker. Good sound off them individually but it's great in stereo mode.

We had a 1st gen Echo in our master bathroom for listening to music in the morning czcams.com/users/postUgkxABghAEkaIDGZfHRBH3D3rBrlraNmnC71 and while in the shower. I didn't realize how tinny and awful the sound output on the original Echo was until we replaced it with the Studio. It was a sonic upgrade far beyond what I was expecting. Just wow. I love it because it's like having speakers IN the shower. My friend likes it because the music is so loud that she can no longer hear me singing. So that's a win-win.

Looking to upgrade my Charge 3, one problem I had with the 3 was that I actually used to use the charging option to charge my phone or iPad and after a few months that seemed to quickly degrade the battery of the speaker itself, I then used the 1yr warranty to replace it and never used the replacement to charge anything again. After like 5 years it seems that one is now sort of blown. Does anyone know if the charge 5 can actually be used to charge things here and there without ruining the battery?

    • @cobalt_soul9715

Something not a lot of people know, but when you get a new electronic device you're supposed to completely drain the battery before you try to charge it. Then when you charge it the first time it is especially important to leave it alone until it is fully charged, then completely drain again and charge up to 100% without any interferences. It is best to charge your devices this way to promote good battery health (or so I was told by someone who works in electronics). I understand life doesn't always allow for a full drain and charge, but when you first take it out of the box it's really important to do that **at least once**. And about the part where you said one speaker seems to be blown, my friend had a charge 3 and that happened to him as well as he had the speaker in his bag and one of the side speakers was vibrating against another object which caused the material to wear down, eventually blowing the speaker; perhaps that is just par for the course after 5 years though. But yes, you should be able to charge your devices no problem with the charge 5 if you don't overdo it by using it more as a battery than an actual speaker, and try to completely drain it before you charge it.
