- As a Canadian I grew up with the sport of hockey and I always wondered what it was like to experience the game in other countries! Stop number four on this Europe Hockey road trip has me in the Netherlands! In this video I'm visiting the Tilburg Trappers, who play in the Germany 3 league! From trying their stadium foods, a back and forth game it was a great time, and the cherry on top was reconnecting with an old friend! The Trappers starting goalie is Cedrick Andree, former Ottawa 67's goalie! Don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss a video!

Canadian Fan Experiences Hockey in the Netherlands!
Produced by Greels Media
I really appreciate what you are doing with htis series. I wish CZcams was around when I toured hockey rinks around Europe in the mid-1990s. I saw games, and talked to players in England, Italy, France, Finland, Slovenia, Austria and Germany. Eventually the project became a documentary on CBC SPorts Journal, but was focused on Japan.
Jim thanks for the kind words! I used to work with Gee-Gees Football, always appreciated your work for the game here in Canada! All the best! Would love to watch that documentary if you know where to find it!
good video man! The trappers are my hometeam so I really enjoy hearing you talk about them, I think the reason most of the supporters are so 'friendly' or whatever you would call it is because they allow us to play in their league. back in the day when we tried to get in, there was a lot of backlash from german teams who didnt agree on getting in a dutch team just because they wanted to keep the german league german. so we need to show them with respect why we are the best and deserve to be in that spot and you can only do that by killing with kindness and working your ass off! again great video loved your perspective on things and you are always welcome back in tilburg for a beer or another cheeky satay ;)
Interesting perspective! Thanks for the kind words!!
The food you had is actually a dutch staple street food: Indonesian inspired chicken sate. Sate sauce is a spicy peanut sauce that you find in many Indonesian dishes.
Nice! I was told they try and cater somethings around German food because of the connections in the league but I guess not!
Nice video! always wonder why ice hockey isn’t a lot bigger in the Netherlands: they love speed skating and field hockey 😅
Interesting point!
And they also have a relatively cold climate with cold winters, and lots of canals and lakes that get frozen in winter, and a high income standard, so that a lot of people can afford such an expensive sport. So yeah, perfect ice hockey conditions, but for some reason, ice hockey never really took off in the Netherlands, they always preferred field hockey for some reason. Same in neighboring Belgium.
Great video! Tilburg played against my hometown team Dundee Stars who play in the UK's EIHL. Awesome fans.
Loved my time in the EIHL tbh!
You have to go watch a Finnish hockey game. Either Porin Ässät or Tampereen Ilves
Why Ässät 😂
@@thejjzz good team
I’d love to!
Fantastic series. Indeed a great crowd for a euro third division. I have never understood why hockey is not stronger in the low countries, as they are great skaters and at the same time passionate about field hockey, why ice hockey is practically non-existent. Old paintings from the region even show that a form of the sport was popular back in the days.
This season the attendances are very good compared to last years. Thats mainly due to the fact that we have 2 competitive leagues (cross border and a national league) and Tilburg playing at their own level.
Appreciate the kind words!
Good question, we're all about the speed skating somehow and increasingly short track
I feel like the fact that field hockey is so big here is the reason why ice hockey isn't
I was Cedrick's goalie coach in Ottawa for years with the Eastern Ontario Wild!
Thats so cool!
Awesome!!
This was intresting. As a finn i also like to discover the hockey culture in those smaller and unknown hockey countries. One of the biggest surprises for me was how crazy hockey fans there are in Croatia.
I’ll put it on my list!!
ah u should try serbia then lol we have like 2 ice rinks.. and dunno maybe 4-5 clubs only, 2 clubs are playing in an ihl leage with slovenain and croatian teams @@RobertGreeley
Fun Fact, if my assumption is correct the away team is Black Dragons Erfurt, which is actually the youth team from Moritz Seider.
Same organization with the youth program but I don't think he ever played for the pro team here!
Yo dude. Great video. Thanks for visiting my small country. I'm happy to see that the sport is growing in popularity here in NL. At the same time, I like it as it is right now. Ticket prices are cheap and the beer is good. Whenever you're back here, Ill buy you a beer or two at a Nijmegen Devils game.
Appreciate the offer!
Great vid! Your series is very unique and really fascinating for a long time hockey fan. To see these relatively unknown Euro hockey leagues is great. BTW The coach of the Trappers is Doug Mason, father of NHL goalie Steve Mason!
I had a nice little chat with him, cool to know! Thanks for the kind words!!
I saw the Trappers in pre-season. They were away at another team you have visited, Fife Flyers. Flyers won but it was a tight game. I think the EIHL is maybe about on a par with DEL2 but a bit ahead of the Oberliga(German Third Division).
I think that's a pretty fair judgement!
Great vid. Looking forward to your France video - when i worked in france decades ago there were some pretty good teams in Gap, Grenoble and Strausbourgh. Thanks Robert
Next episode is in France with Strasbourg! Hope you enjoy!!
My Swedish buddy and I went once in Belfast! We had a great time. The fans understood the game too, the place was pretty full too. Great time!
That's awesome!
In UK there are about 3 teams that draw considerable crowds to midsize arenas (7-9k) for years. Belfast, Sheffield and Nottingham
@@lws7394 yes it was very close in numbers to the crowd at either a well attended CHL or AHL team. I was impressed. I have a friend in Canada from Northern Ireland, he told me they intentionally kept the team as non-sectarian (a huge problem for sport in Belfast). This has allowed them to kinda be the team of peace. Smart marketing and overall a lot of fun. We’re seeing hockey grow in the UK now as a result.
@@lws7394Glasgow, Cardiff and Coventry have smaller arenas but manage to regularly fill them quite well. In the past the UK also had the Manchester Storm, which had great crowds for a few years in the mid-90s, one time even selling out Manchester Arena with 17.200 people, which was even a European attendance record for hockey for some time. They also briefly had a franchise in London, the London Knights (not to be confused with the London Knights from London, Ontario), which had decent crowds but folded after only five years.
Love your content Rob. Keep it up
Appreciate it!
As an old man, I'll still shout "GO PANDAS" every time anyone says Dutch hockey. The nostalgia is real
What’s the Go Pandas reference?
@@RobertGreeleyThe Pandas were the team of my hometown Rotterdam, back in the late 80s/early 90s
Another great video! You are crushing it.
Thanks Josh!
brotha come to slovkia for extraliga playoffs: Slovan Bratislava VS Kosice. Its quarter finals
I watched Kosice play against Michavolce, earlier in the season that episode is coming soon!
Most underrated hockey youtuber ever
Appreciate you!
Wow I didn't know about any of this, very cool, I might have to go myself some time.
Please do! Let me know if you end up going!
It's a shame that ice hockey is so small in my country. I've been to a game in Austria, and I really had a nice time there!
Loved my time going to a game in Austria honestly!
Awesome videos bud!
Glad you like them!
Belfast would probably be an interesting trip for you. Their arena is basically the only place in Belfast where people come together regardless of which side of the wall they live/grew up on. A Swedish newspaper was there recently and one thing you shouldn't talk about is politics or The Troubles. Other than that, it seemed super cool and odd.
I get recommended Belfast a lot tbh!
@@RobertGreeley That's cool. I mean, the story around it alone makes it very interesting for other reasons than hockey. Also, former world class Premier League goalkeeper (football/soccer) Petr Chech is a goalie there. How wild is that?
@@DONTHASSLETHEHOFFAnd Theoren Fleury played for Belfast during the 2005/06 season due to the NHL lockout!
You should come to see a game in Slovenia, I would recommend game between Olimpija and Jesenice
Sounds like fun!
@@RobertGreeley it is, right now they are playing finals and fans are crazy even though Jesenice are not great this season but this is traditional derby
man you should definitely visit Czech republic for example the derby Pardubice : Hradec Králové
I was in Plzen, not too long ago: Day in the Life of a Czech Extraliga Hockey Player
czcams.com/video/qDw1NTukDe0/video.html
I keep forgetting that my country has an ice hockey team since field hockey is way more dominant over here out of the 2 lol
Have you ever gone to watch ice hockey in the Netherlands?
The Trappers are really worth a visit. Plan a weekend trip, go to the pool nextdoor on your second day to chill.
Looks great!
Thanks!
I hope to see you in the French League to see a match of my home team the Rouen Dragons maybe one of the best french atmosphere
I have a video from France 2 being posted tomorrow! I did two games in that league in total, didn’t get up to the Magnus!
We need some more men’s hockey leagues in Canada !!
AmaIng how many levels there are in Europe.
Looks like these guys respect each other more too.. they know they aren't going to the show or anything close to it so they play for the enjoyment. I bet you North American players make up 80% of these teams.
Sadly I don’t know if more leagues is necessarily the answer, until the AHL, ECHL, and U SPORTS teams even start consistently getting attendance to 90% + in capacity filled we need to get more people in the doors before anything!
Nice vid, nice to see that ice hockey is at least a little bit popular in some parts of the Netherlands. I really like the arena, looks rather neat and comfortable for a team that plays in German 3rd division, most stadiums of German 3rd tier teams are much worse. Atmosphere seems to be rather quiet and dull though, in Germany the fans are making a lot more noise.
Thanks for the kind words, and the crowds definitely keep it respectful and don’t really chirp. I don’t think dull is the right word because they definitely had their unique moments of excitement!
ow dam i had my yellow jersy on then now i have the bleu i am sitting on 2:51 just above the white marketing bilboard next to max ict nice to see this ( coming there now 2 years )
Love to hear that!
Happy Birthday Anyway!!!!🏒🏒
Hahaha thank you!
You should come visit Nokia Arena @ Tampere!
Would love to! They get recommended a lot!
T-T-TILBURG TRAPPERSSSS!!!!!!!
Loved my time there!
@@RobertGreeley that is great to hear!
that's sick
Thanks!
You presented at my school. 😮😮😮😮
Happy belated birthday
Thank you!
Is this team (and league) better than the NL/Belgium league the rest of the NL teams play in?
Yes, levels ahead. I'd say the best BeNeLeague teams have regionalliga level.
Interesting!
Should do the Hannover Double!
I get this a nice bit tbh!
Come Next season, go to Bad Tölz and watch a game from my hometown team 👍
Would love to!
When does their preseason or regular season begin?
We are now in the quarter finals off the play offs
We play from late september to march.
September to March as mentioned 🙌
0:01 how can you see anything from here?
Best view in the rink honestly
W video
🙌
I think the Dutch are occupied with soccer and handball and those type of games professionally.
We have soccer in Canada but it doesn’t mean that much to us in reality. If there’s a new sport that might click it’s probably be rugby.
There's a solid soccer support system in Canada though
next time go to eindhoven kemphanen
Noted!
Dude, there's so much more you could have said in your video! Yes, the Trappers play in a German league, but why? They've even won it a couple of times! Why didn't they go up to play in the second German league? You didn't even mention the name of the team opposing them that day. Also, I'm 99% sure you got chicken saté (peanut based sauce), and that's most definitely not German inspired food as you might have suggested. Scratch that one to Dutch colonialism in the East Indies. If you want to try proper Durch stadium food, get some Frikandel or Bitterballen. Just don't ask what type of meat is in them. No one knows 😂
By the way, I used to live in Ottawa and went to many 67's and Sens games back in the day. Even to the Stanley Cup game Sens won against the Canes. I can tell you that the atmosphere inside these 3rd league 2-4k sized stadiums during playoffs and the finals is way more intense and loud and rowdy than what I experienced in Canada.
Appreciate the feedback!
The only cool thing about Tilburg is their stadium. xD
Stadium was unreal!
Wow, what an experience lol. Looks like the same cringe carny atmosphere that they have here in North America.. Do they pump in the burst your eardrums music between puck drops as well? Y'know, because you can't just enjoy the hockey game on its own.
I had a great time don’t know what to tell ya lol
Love your content, great series!
Glad you enjoy it!
