Thanks so much for uploading this, I'd almost forgotten I'd done the programme!
Some great shots of life on Coniston Water, although the two traditional old wooden ferries shown in the clip are long since gone. Of their successors one is fibreglass and the other aluminium!
Coniston still exudes the charm and character of Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons, however.
    Best, Robert.

Hello Robert, I'm glad you found the video here. When I watched the film it reminded me of many happy times on the S&A lake cruises. It's sad to know that the old wooden boats have gone... one of these days I'll be back to see the new ones.
      All the best, Jon

How wonderful to have this lovely film on CZcams, full of fascinating information that gives a background to 'Swallows & Amazons' and Arthur Ransome's other books.

Thanks great descriptions., I have read some of Ransomes other books , like his cruise in Racunda a boat he had built in lativia while he was sort of hiding after his book outing oscar Wilde and a law suite. His autobiography also makes a fascination read , it's about a completely different era with so many things I had to research as I read it. Quite the character in his early life including time in the Lake District.
His boat Racunda was a difficult boat by his accounts but an interesting floating office for him too. He eventually sold the boat to a young Adlar Coles who had to sail it back from Lativia , it sailed so badly he almost gave up. Adlar Coles went on to write many sailing books his most famous was the definitive 'heavy weather sailing'.
There are some strange books and stories about him being a spy for England and Russia but I think it's a lot of bunk he just managed to figure out how to fit into the society of Russia/ lativa and get incredible in sites into what it's like being in a revolution......
    All good stuff
    Cheers Warren

I stumbled onto these books rather later in life. I must have been in my thirties. I was delighted with them and read them as bed-time stories to my own children. I hope I've established a new tradition in my family....but so far, only one of my boys has managed to have a grandson for me....and I don't think they read to him. More's the pity. Maybe I'll have to make a point of bringing a copy of the book and reading it to him myself.

Hi Richard, You might like to know that the books have been made into audiobooks on CD.
      Here's the cheapest I could find S&A on e-bay:

I have almost the complete set and enjoy then on long trips in the car, I live in USA now. A couple of minor gripes at the audio editor missing the odd miss pronunciations ....like misen for mizzen but I can live with that.
      Defiantly worth getting
