    I'm thinking Tyrone was/is the kept boy toy of someone who had some authority in the financial aid office or someone in administration. No way Tyrone as a student worker had the authority to give himself that much financial aid money without some higher-ups knowing.

      And thats the story. This interview is a smack in the face. You really think i'm stupid. Then try to hide behind Howard saying people making Howard look bad and I understand some people are upset but there is a better way to go about it. They should be out there with pitchforks and torches. But there is a whole class of black folks stuntin at the expense of the rest of us. Then want to talk unity. They could have done so much good with that money versus taking care of this one spoiled numskull. I don't care what his grades were.

      Some people can't afford school because their parents 'make to much money' for financial aid but there's not enough cash flow for the parents to actually contribute (some parents don't even believe in paying for college - it's on the student 'to figure it out')

    • @1991Meka

      Infinite Dreams I went to college. Its either:your parents make too much for financial aid and you have to take out loans or you apply for and get awarded scholarships OR your parent(s) make low income and your are eligible for the PELL grant and other specific grants and you are still able to take out loans and still able to apply for and get awarded scholarships. Summer classes are not covered by financial aid. He said his family contribution would have been $0 so he would have been eligible for PELL Grant, scholarships, and other loans but to the amount he received. He should not have been able to get that much no matter what his situation. Work study is a student job.

      I agree with you, but I think there is something wrong when the university can decide to give money to a student without any discretion. I don't think that is fair to other students. Networking should not give you those type of privileges. University administrators are supposed to be objective. Giving a random student money without due process reeks of unethical behavior and creates the perception that has been created by this situation.

      The University has no discretion on what you do with the money you received this grants after they disperse you your refund. Tuition is 21K at Howard and room and board in DC can bring the total cost of attending Howard for undergrad at 45K easy. That's 170K over 4 years not including summer semesters (which can be 15K per summer semester if studying abroad). Then law school is 60K a year for 3 years so that's an additional 180K. That's 350K already with no accounting for summer courses. If he decided that he wanted to spend his room and board money on a cheap apartment and buy a car with the rest the University has no say. If he decided he buy used books and spend the money he saved on a trip to Mexico, the University has no say. Room and board has a max that the University will give out to ANY student and they don't ask for rent receipts before they disperse a refund, nor should they. In my opinion, this has been overblown after I looked at the facts.

    • @Smithworks2
      @Smithworks2 Před 6 lety +2

      JTyme08 thats just TOO much freely allocated. Aren't the funds (for R & B especially) sent directly to specified accounts (students just sign papers). That seems a bit far fetched, not to mention dangerous to young men & women tempted to dip in these funds for personal use. The returned monies I understand but tuition, room & board fees are pushed between departments, are they not?

    The young man received favoritism because of his connections to leadership. It's wrong, but not necessarily a crime. Showing out on the gram doesn't help either, but again, not a crime. There clearly needs to be much more oversight of monetary awards. Leadership should not be allowed to give money to anyone they want. Unfortunately, this is very common in higher ed. The more connected you are the better off you are. Hopefully this young man can bounce back if he is fully exonerated. There is a lesson in this for all young people; Move in silence. Minimize your business on the gram.

      A crime for whom? If he did not have discretion (i.e. giving himself funds), then it would not be wrong. Especially since the university concluded their internal investigation not finding any wrongdoing on his part. Seems like extreme, and unfair favoritism, not necessarily a crime.

      @kashmoney7421 Před 6 lety

      I agree this does not sound to be illegal. He and his lawyer would not be on hear if they felt he did something illegal. The university really just played favoritism with the financial aid. It sounds like they gave him legit awards that he qualified for but they did so even way above his estimated cost of attendance. If you use federal funds you cannot get above the cost of attendance which is probably one reason they are stressing he received no federal funds.

      Not true, when you get financial aid most times you get a nice fat refund check at the end of the semester. I would know because, although my parents paid my tuition my first 4yrs, I had financial aid during my 5th/last year of college and that’s exactly what happened both semesters... a large refund check which I received and cashed. He’s going to a private school with a high tuition, therefore based on the aid they are getting, those refund checks can be for a substantial amount of money. Also “scholarship” money doesn’t necessarily go straight to the bursar, sometimes it is issued directly to the student to allocate towards the tuition.

    There are two points that everyone seems to be ignoring. 1) Tyrone did not create his own financial aid award. I didn't hear anyone say he worked in the financial aid office or forged any documents. 2) Tyrone is still a student at Howard and no charges have been made against him. Last I checked, if there was evidence of embezzlement, there would be charges. At the very least, he would be expelled. Why is he still a student in good standing? I'll wait... This sounds like one of these sensational flares that people love to fuel. Where are the receipts? And lastly, those of you speculating on and speaking negatively about his sexuality, it's always one of you insecure, broke, unmotivated, unintelligent, homophobic guttersnipes hiding behind a computer screen and keyboard.

    I'm not going to jump to conclusions and castigate him without all the facts from both sides nor am I going to jump on his side. However, I'd think that before crucifying the guy, there are some some important factors that most people are glossing over. First, why are we hearing the name of an (then) undergrad, work-study student from 2012-2015 more than we're hearing the name of the six 2017-2018 employees whom were recently fired? He's been accused of felonious behavior, yet Howard has not dismissed him from the law school or sought to discipline him in any way. Could it be that someone who has more authority over the money is scapegoating a then-undergrad student to save his/her own butt? I don't know. What type of power would an undergraduate work-study student from three years ago have to authorize the release of hundreds of thousands of dollars? As an undergrad doing work-study, he was at the absolute bottom of the totem pole in that office. Work-study students spend their work hours answering phones, getting coffee, and doing homework for their classes. Moreover, he's dressed like literally hundreds of other Howard students from all backgrounds. How is that alone indicative of theft? I need harder evidence. As goofy at it is, being a big showoff isn't a crime. I'm not sure how many of the people flooding the internet with conjectures were actually top students in college, but there ARE benefits to making excellent grades. As someone who graduated summa cum laude from college, I can attest to the fact that a really high GPA can win a student the type of favor that isn't necessarily granted to their less academically motivated peers. Faculty and staff will go out of their way to help students who show an interest in achieving. Perhaps this young man had a similar experience when seeking scholarships and study-abroad opportunities. Don't get me wrong. He may be a complete liar and thief. But, before making that conclusion, I need more concrete evidence of his alleged wrongdoing.

    Notice how he says his parents were going to have “0$” contribution but doesn’t state his mothers income. That’s important because THATS what determines a need basis. Also notice how they try to fluff over how he got a few “fashionable” items and now drives an Infiniti. Financial aid refunds and work study program/ summer internships aren’t going to pay for a high fashion wardrobe and luxury car.
    Lastly, he never once states EXACTLY what aid he receives just not 400k +. Nor could he say what funds exactly did he receive them from..but he works for the financial aid department? Right lol

      Let me help you out a little, as a cpa in the making you probably need to start listening and thinking more critically. You can start by researching the salary of a legal summer intern at a private law firm. That might help with your adding.

    • @Collierslife1
      @Collierslife1 Před 6 lety +5

      Cam- you make great points. None of these "facts" make sense. In addition, NO summer internship at the top law firms pay enough to live like a trust fund baby in DC when you come from a $0 contribution family.

    • @leonetterainey-hammett5854
      @leonetterainey-hammett5854 Před 6 lety +4

      Well that’s ignorant. The fact that he comes from a 0 contribution family really has no relevance concerning his current lifestyle which is what you all are seeing and responding to. Making roughly 40k over the summer while you’re in law school would certainly afford one the ability to buy some designer rags, if that’s what you’re into. He has possible been at a firm since 1L year, that’s 80k just over the summer. That coupled with your living allowance over the school year can make for a comfortable lifestyle. Mind you, you all don’t know what his living situation is like, whether or not he lives in DC or outside, does he have a roommate?? 400k is also not an alarming amount of tuition for 7 years of school and a few summers abroad. People graduate from University of Phoenix with 100k in debt.
      He has an Infiniti. That’s a modest car likely with a note and definitely not the typical choice of a trust fund baby.
      This isn’t even my friend it just sickens me to see people really trying to put “facts” together from one article and instagram pictures. Everyone stunts for the gram, but now it’s evidence. Please. All of the inspector gadgets should stick to their day jobs. The investigation is closed.... been closed.

      Stacy true. Also, his interview he did mention that he has friends in the fashion industry in New York and that they would sometimes gift him items. I have seen that happen frequently where someone will work for a “fashion week” show and be given much of the merchandise from said show. Many of the items are “samples” meaning that they are a mock up of the real thing. Especially leather goods (shoes, bags, belts) From the stage it looks real but it won’t have the same quality fabric or leather, inside lining and etc of the items that are sold retail. If you were a designer, would you send a young, irresponsible and sweaty model with a face full of makeup down a runway in something that you can sell for say $12,000 or would you put them in a $120 replica? I agree that some things don’t add up, however, The main aspect of these allegations was that he “Embezzled” money which was explained in the video, that he did not. Now whatever money he received and what he did with it is his own business as long as no crime was committed. The $400k+ is clearly his cost of tuition and fees for the 7 years that He’s attended the school. And let’s not forget about all those major credit card companies who are at those tables during freshman orientation and walk you through how to fill out their application and get you approved.......with no job..

    This happened at my HBCU (Albany State University). Money was stolen from financial aid about 2 years ago and 4 people got fired. I was given too much $$ on my loans one year, being stupid I accepted the loan anyway and just had a huge refund. Technically it isn’t embezzlement if it was given to him they financial aid. He still has to pay it back regardless as it is a student loan thru financial aid. The problem is that a cap wasn’t put on his aid.
    A ceiling is placed on your aid depending on the estimated yearly cost of your schools tuition. Now, at my school the estimated cost per year was $16000 but in actuality it only amounted to about $12000. Which means I can borrow $4000+ more than what I need but a financial aid advisor has to approve it. Howard is an expensive school so while it may have been $30k to attend the estimated cost could’ve been much higher meaning he could’ve borrowed around that amount ($400k) in the almost 8 years he’s been there, law school is especially expensive at Howard.
    Hella people in my school were shown favoritism on financial aid because they knew someone that knew someone, but we never had work study in financial aid that’s just crazy. Too many personal files there.
    Soooo, coming from a student, I honestly don’t think Tyrone embezzled money per se. He might’ve gotten them to give him an increase on his loans so he can have a little pocket cash and now he’s just caught in the thick of it and some jealous person leaked his files cause he was being shown favoritism in financial aid because he worked there.

    An investigation needs to take place. I would want to see his financial aid award letters by year. I am less concerned about how he spent the money once it was in his possession.

    I feel bad for this kid. In America, you are presumed innocent but in the court of social media, you are presumed guilty. Obviously, he has worked very hard and he comes from a high need situation, so it is entirely possible that he got the "full ride". The only thing that would not be included would be fun money, unless he had loans which I did not hear mentioned. If HU wanted him that badly, however, perhaps they gave him money for his personal needs too. Happens all the time with athletes. The only thing in my mind that doesn't check out is the Infinity. Other than that, all of this is completely plausible. Either way, he's going to have to explain this for the rest of his career.Sounds like, once exonerated, he will be seeking damages however.
    You can see he's hurt and concerned about the rep of HU. If you went to HU, then you love the school and you want to protect it. He did a good job getting his point across and explaining why the accusations don't make since. Whether he made a mistake or he's innocent, I have to wish the young brother well. I'm glad social media and cell phones weren't around in my 20s and I am for damn sure happy no one is holding me accountable for mistakes from my youth! HU alum here. Class of 91. Proud parent of a young man in higher education who is also young black and gifted.

    Look, Howard has a long history of being known as never having enough money for all of their prospective students. Now, for the few they choose to help? Yes, they will find a way to help them. I know a girl who went to continuation school and was accepted to Howard on condition, and then she was fully funded by the university all the way through to her Masters degree. How’d that happen? Her father was a well connected ex-Black Panther, artist and community patriarch.
    For Tyrone’s situation, he’s worked the gay angle to his benefit, and he’s milked single parent household trope. And, he’s from Atlanta? How do we know he doesn’t come from a well established family? Who knows?

Any other time there’s a problem with the system holding back black and brown kids, yet when we see one of them winning we are quick to question “how”. He’s a 4.0 student, community involved, worked IN the office, undergrad and law school total seven years when you add in book money and his room and board the numbers make sense. $400,000 divided by 7 years = 60k1. Howard isn’t cheap 2. Room and board is not cheap3. Food 4. Books
    Including that boy salary for actually working? Seriously, how many of y’all actually went to college and know how expensive it is? Be real, he didn’t embezzle, he secured his future by the opportunity presented. That’s Gods favor. Get you some.

He can’t steal money that was approved signed off on and dispersed to him. This is the university’s fin aid office fault, not his. He’s the fall guy. Someone had a personal vendetta due to not getting what they wanted or they got scared and ratted everyone out. Those six employees were able to resign quietly and bow out gracefully because they were full time, Federal employees. This guy is a student so it’s easier to call his name out and point the finger at him to draw the attention away from those grown ass adults who are responsible for giving out all of this money to their favorite students. The only thing he did was be favored by the right people and he kept quiet about his special treatment. He wasn’t the only student that received generous aid awards and he won’t be the last. It happens at large, well known PWIs and I know Bc I attend one and have seen white people do it as well... 🤷🏽‍♂️ And there is so much embezzlement and extortion at white schools between Athletics and athletes/their family, but it’s “News” at an HBCU. 🤔

I had to explain to the workers there that any grant money or stipend money that is not directly spent on tuition, room and board is considered income. And that they needed to explain that to those kids. They argued with me. Even said they are not tax advisors. Weeks later, angry grad students were showing up in the office because they received letters from the IRS for past due taxes on grant and stipend money they earned in years prior. I also discovered that they were paying the same invoices 2 and 3 times. I could not believe how financially mismanaged Howard was.
