The "Coventry Carol" is a Christmas carol dating from the 16th century. The carol was performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors.

How clever; this would never occur to me to do. I am singularly impressed not only by the skill of his rendetion, but to have even conceived of the concept to sing each part, and then put it together in the computer is nothing short of brilliant.

I'm really happy you enjoyed this one and appreciate my videos on all these different levels. I'm curious to know how adding my visual has changed your perception of the audio. Do my colors match yours? Does my body motion correspond to the energy you felt in the song? Does it overall add / take away / change? Much to talk about. Joyeux Noël to you and see you tomorrow for the FINAL Christmas tune. :)

It doesn't just sound like it, it's exactly the core of the story: the King Herod sent his men to kill all children.

Raising the third of triad (usually the last chord of the piece) one half-step. Here, the entire song was in a minor key, but the very last chord was in a major key. The effect is sometimes called a "brightening resolution" or a "happy ending."

@@kaalen_wilson I don’t unfortunately but it was very slow. Faster ones are enjoyable but focusing on each note breaks my heart in a way others cannot.
Robert Croo wrote the earliest version in 1534, and the oldest known setting of the melody dates from 1591. There are alternative, modern settings of the carol by Kenneth Leighton, Philip Stopford and Michael McGlynn. Good luck 👍

I thought I knew every christmassy song in the world. Turns out I didn't. It has a bit of a 20's/30 close harmony twang to it. Totally reminds me of the Comedian Harmonists. I totally love it! Finally a beautiful bare-to-the-bones version without cathedral-style reverb. I'm looking for different versions of this song as I'm totally inspired to create a chiptune commodore-64 version of the song.

Yes, the Picardy third is meant to have this effect. The carol is pretty heavy in its harmonization and lyrics, a major chord is a softer way to finish the piece on a sweeter note.

It's a device known as a Tierce de Picardie (or Picardy third). It involves finishing with the major chord when throughout the piece it has finished with minor chord cadences (i.e raising the 3rd of the chord by a minor second / semi-tone).

Wonderfully and respectfully done, and the Picardy third (tierce Picarde) is properly sung at the final cadence. It should be noted that Coventry Carol is not explicitly a Christmas song; it is sung on December 28 in honor of the Holy Innocents - children of Bethlehem slain in a quest by King Herod to kill the baby Jesus Christ. See Matthew 2:16-18. Your marvelous rendition elicits maudlin to orthodox Christians who know what happened. Blessings.

Well bless your little heart. I am a musician, a coral director, an organist, a bass guitar player, a southern American gentleman, and well schooled in the matters of which I opined some years ago. Moreover, I have never in my life been accused of pretense, and such remarks are taken with umbrage. The above, unwelcome remark has no bearing or logic, seeing that my comment merely comprises a compliment followed by a brief presentation of factual information. It is suggested that one look it up and learn something, then go study some manners, upon which you might consider deleting the spurious, impetuous, odious comment. Then I will remove mine. Fair nuff?

It's actually a super dark story. After Jesus was born, King Herod heard there was a king born and he thought it would challenge his power, so he ordered that all of the infants to be killed (since he didn't know which one was the supposed King). It's known as the Slaughter of the Innocents. Mary and Joseph, however, escaped to Egypt, so Jesus was safe. The song is a mom singing to her dead baby
