- The welfare state arises from the attempt to do good with other people’s money. Such attempts always fail because: Nobody spends somebody else’s money as carefully as his own. Welfare is supply driven. Those spending the money use force to collect it and to insure those receiving it use it for ''right'' purposes. Good intentions are corrupted by bad means. Friedman visits U.S. and Britain. Discussion Participants: Robert McKenzie, Moderator; Milton Friedman; James R. Dumpson, Chief Administrator, Human Resources Admin., NYC; Thomas Sowell, Professor of Economics, UCLA; Robert Lampman, Professor of Economics, Institute of Poverty; Helen Bohen O'Bannon, Secretary of Welfare, State of Pennsylvania.

"I don't remember talking to people on welfare that were not being treated like children while they were on it" - Thomas Sowell.
This series is far richer when Thomas Sowell graces the panel!
Helen and Sowell arguing
It's a damn shame, Sowell and Friedman should have been given the reins to run this economy for the last 50 years. You don't let that amount of wisdom go to waste.

It’s so nice to hear these people talking about a serious problem without any of the modern racial victimism
I understand that this is the "full video" version, but I wonder if complete unedited sessions of the negotiations that follow the films may be available to watch.
A dose of tough love and honesty from Milton Friedman.
The Brown family's situation occurs more often than many might appreciate. I pray their little girl is now alive and doing well. I believe the welfare programs, in all their manifestations and good intentions, have had many unintended consequences in the lives of African Americans.
"the family breaking up", she says, looking Milton Friedman dead in the eyes, praying to god Sowell won't blind side her to school her on WHY the family, black ones in particular, broke down... If only. She went on to live the rest of her life without stepping down from her pedestal of righteousness for even a second. The best of intentions, nothing but misery to show for it and an inflated sense of self importance nonetheless
I keep watching this series and every time it gets better even though there is no additional information to it. Economists like Milton Friedman and Thomas Sowel are what a country needs to flourish. I believe that is the reason such intellectuals have been intentionally shadowed and ignored by media’s and public education systems because the facts that they present can’t be objected by the self interest groups.
Watching the video tells us that fighting poverty or helping poor in this age is not an easy job and we have not yet developed an efficient strategy. Thanks for all those who made such a video available.
i fucking love sowell
Welfare state=Still treating you like an irresponsible child in 2020

This is so informative.
12% is a small number?! I want to take 12% of Helen's wealth kthx.
Many welfare recipients would be much better off by simply having fewer children.
Does anyone know what happened to Mr. Brown the hospital orderly?
Great episode. Too bad the time for the discussion does not allow for a more detailed explanation of why Friedman was so right.
