- “I want a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold, and what they do not, who know their creed so well, that they can give an account of it, who know so much of history that they can defend it.”
This lecture was given against the backdrop of a resurgent anti-Catholicism throughout England, marked by anti-Catholic hysteria and government overstep. Although Newman is responding to an institutional prejudice born specifically of establishment Protestantism, his words for the most part can be applied equally as well to prejudice born of secularized liberalism.
Newman puts so-called “public opinion” into its place. Newman exhorts Catholics to be straightforward, generous, and forbearing in spite of provocation. “Interpret the actions of all,” he says, “in the best sense that you possibly can.” Links

Saint John Henry Newman gave up everything - long held beliefs, lifelong friends and associates, privileges, and home, to convert according with his conscience. In return, he was distrusted by his Catholic peers. He is a Saint. Does anyone remember who shunned him?

Brilliant response to a topic that I've often thought about. "Every age is a time of martyrs," that one hit home. "Not every age is a time of saints" rings very true for now.
St. Newman gave upper-middle-class Catholics a very valuable playbook for the ultra-modern world that he didn't live to see. Ethnic/family Catholicism could never have prepared YCP types to face the 20th and 21st centuries, flung away from family and home parish and fighting to stay faithful on every side. Even with all of our other failures, this line of internal evangelization has proven pretty robust, and we owe him a great debt for fighting for it almost alone.
So prophetic and accurate!

It does seem that what St John Henry Newman said about England in his day could be simply applies to the trends in today’s Communistic and atheistic culture of today in our country - though, politically-speaking, the attacks are against His Teachings and less against our persons, in se, to some degree. Let us pray this Independence Day and every day that our leaders may uphold the teachings of the Holy Bible and Jesus Christ Our Lord and that the Truth will fill men’s hearts with His Peace and Love. Sacred Heart of Jesus, we trust in Thee!

Psalm 55 speaks: "Listen to my prayer, O God; don’t hide yourself when I cry to you. Hear me, Lord! Listen to me! For I groan and weep beneath my burden of woe. My enemies shout against me and threaten me with death. They surround me with terror and plot to kill me. Their fury and hatred rise to engulf me. My heart is in anguish within me. Stark fear overpowers me. Trembling and horror overwhelm me. Oh, for wings like a dove, to fly away and rest! I would fly to the far-off deserts and stay there. I would flee to some refuge from all this storm. O Lord, make these enemies begin to quarrel among themselves-destroy them with their own violence and strife. Though they patrol their walls night and day against invaders, their real problem is internal-wickedness and dishonesty are entrenched in the heart of the city. There is murder and robbery there, and cheating in the markets and wherever you look. It was not an enemy who taunted me-then I could have borne it; I could have hidden and escaped. But it was you, a man like myself, my companion and my friend. What fellowship we had, what wonderful discussions as we walked together to the Temple of the Lord on holy days. Let death seize them and cut them down in their prime, for there is sin in their homes, and they are polluted to the depths of their souls. But I will call upon the Lord to save me-and he will. I will pray morning, noon, and night, pleading aloud with God; and he will hear and answer. Though the tide of battle runs strongly against me, for so many are fighting me, yet he will rescue me. God himself-God from everlasting ages past-will answer them! For they refuse to fear him or even honor his commands. This friend of mine betrayed me-I who was at peace with him. It used to be true of the United Kingdom. Not any longer!
There is a marked dearth of faith. On UK cancer forms, everyone wants to hear how to cope with cancer, yet no one wants to hear of faith. They are looking for drugs instead of Body and Blood, counseling instead of spiritual direction, peer groups instead of prayer groups.

Jesus made one Church. He called that, “My Church”. Outside of that the rest of them are man made and have no authority to access to the Sacraments upon which a Christian life is built. Any honest look at the real history of the origins of Christianity will bring the seeker to the doors of the Catholic Church. To look inside will require courage only because the lies whispered into the ears of the Prots has displaced the appreciation of truth. Come in, it is your home too.
