I'm not sure I'd call it a digression. The better quality enables producers to manipulate the eq more intuitively, and effect it without having to compromise clarity. I don't mind people using Vocaloid for techno or electronica. It just means that they'll be producing better and better work.

The point of them making the voices more natural is not for a specific genre, it's for general quality. Besides being robots, they fit in nicely and can do really well with songs just like this, where they sound very weird in most dubs of songs originally sung by humans.
