  • I'm looking at a single malt scotch whisky from the Talisker distillery on the Isle of Skye today. This is their famous 18 year old. It's a bottling that has seen some controversy recently. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    Fully agree, Geoff!
    I am so tired of all those recent whisky prices hikes, we all need to scream a big "NO!" in the faces of the whisky industry, otherwise this will continue. Luckily I bought a few bottles of the Talisker 18 under 100€. Great product at 90 €, no no no way at 180 €!
    Whisky fans: Join me and stop buying, please!!!
    Some good news at the end: The new version is now available at 116 € in Germany, so it seems they are not selling (enough) at their moon prices. GOOOOOD!

    Great review. Talisker 18 is one of my favorites. It’s a shame the beverage companies are hiking the prices up. Problem they don’t realize is that a good customer like myself would buy this 2-3 times a year. Now maybe once per year. That said, I picked this bottle up again today for $200 and it was alongside Macallan 18 for $500 🤔

    Much as I like Talisker 18 I've always thought it not much better than the 10 and that's why I didn't buy it too often. I think it does emphasise the maritime notes more than the 10 but not by much. I has exactly the same Diageo Spec as the 10 - Coloured (obviously so, it resembles marmalade); chill-filtered and the same bottling strength. Now, I have to confess to something here. Talisker 10 has been a close friend of mine for a long, long, time and it's always on my shelf. It's the classic Talisker expression and the one by which all other Taliskers are judged by. It's routinely discounted in U.K supermarkets and I recently picked up a bottle for £30. Even before the price of Talisker 18 went mental I could almost buy three bottles of the 10 for one 18 which is why it didn't get a look in very often.
    So, if it struggled to get on my shelf before it increased in price by 100% what chance does it have now? Answer - 0% It now costs £180 and Diageo haven't improved it one jot. It's exactly the same thing as it was when it was half the price. It's folk like you and me, Geoff, that buy whisky like this more than once in a lifetime. I used the present tense but it should have been the past tense. I used to buy Talisker 18 but I'm not going to any more.
    Why does Diageo think that's a good business plan? I guess they'll have to market it as 'Premium' but is it? Talisker has an unusual flavour profile which is far more challenging than the premium sherry styles like Macallan 18 or Dalmore. Besides, there already was a 'premium' Talisker in the 25 year old. I suppose, looking at the big picture, and this is a point highlighted by our good pal WhiskyLock, Diageo might be looking to corner the budget range with their NAS and 10 year expressions where they can just use their muscle to hammer the opposition (£30 for Talisker 10) and keep the older stuff for the very wealthy. It's obvious that Talisker is churned out on a very large scale as it's a core ingredient in Johnnie Walker and that makes more money for them than anything else. The NAS range is pure marketing as it's nowhere near as good as the 10 but there's obviously enough spirit do have the range. The 18 and 25 are expensive but a token gesture as they return far less money than the cash cow of the cheap stuff. Like Dalmore and Macallan they are now designed to impress the suits by virtue of being expensive and nothing else.

    There is no way I would buy this even with this glowing review. At current US prices, Laga16 is HALF the price of this. There are SO many other options, and Bunna is always a winner in my book. And it’s $50 less than this. That leaves enough for a 2nd bottle of decent entry level anything!

    Nice review, Geoff.
    I paid roughly 74 euros for my bottle of Talisker 18 back in December 2019. Today it is virtually sold out in Bulgaria. Maybe some bottles can still be found but the price is well north of 100 euros already.
    IMHO Lagavulin 16 yo (and 8 yo for that matter) and Talisker 18 prices of today are very strong contender for the most cynical move of Diageo along with their constant corner cutting with the standard bottlings against the absurdly priced "special releases". I've always been very sceptical about the actual price/quality ratio of Diageo whiskies and now I'm even more so. IMHO their pricing has very little to do with production costs, inflation, etc. They're just out to strip as much money off the consumers as they can using the greatest than ever interest in whisky globally. To this I'll always vote with my wallet and simply not buy. In fact, if I stop buying whisky today and keep my consumption rate, I think I'm good for the next 10 years. Easy! Of course, Diageo whiskies are by far not the last ones left on Earth, neither the best ones, so I doubt I'd have to do this.
    Cheers!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Před 2 lety +1

      Solid logic there. I'd agree about the pricing move. Even with the economic troubles of today there's no justifying price hikes on this level. If you're set for 10 years, then I'd agree there's no need. The only part I'd disagree with is that I think Diageo DO have some of the best distilleries in the world. They're often neutered, but many of them are world-class distillates. Tragic that they're so expensive. I completely understand anyone who says their money is better spend elsewhere. Cheers! 🥃

    • @Nikolay_Nikolov
      @Nikolay_Nikolov Před 2 lety +1

      @@Gwhisky Problem is we don't have access to much of the world class spirit that comes out of Diageo distilleries. And world class spirit it is. Out of extended classic malts range there are no OB of Diageo single malts except for the Singleton branded range. Flora & Fauna bottles don't count and they are also neutered. In the end of the day it is their spirit to do whatever they see fit with it. Since I haven't heard of Diageo suffering any sells drops I have to give it to them: they are doing great. Millions of passive consumers buy their pedestrian whiskies. Thousands of "collectors", "investors" and even genuine whisky enthusiasts buy their overpriced "special releases". The only target group left bitching is the crusty "purists" and "cheap ass snobs" like myself. Lucky for us, there are many more distilleries that churn millions of bottles of high quality whisky at reasonable price.
      Cheers

    It sounds like good stuff as per your review Geoff. I will stick with the 10 for now until older age offerings become reasonably obtainable. As for the prices, it seems each region seems to have their own economic reasons to ratchet up prices. Some products will stay on shelves but it's upto retailers to decide whether they can afford inventory build up or cut margins to sell it. You see quite a discrepancy sometimes even in the same city/town to the tune of +/- 20% or more. That's crazy manipulation or gouging. I don't care what the reasons are.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  Před 2 lety +4

      Very true. I often find myself running around my city because there's such discrepancy in the prices. There's definitely some greedy retailers out there who overcharge on top of Diageo itself overcharging. No fun.

    Great review thanks Geoff. At around $200 USD in stores near me, I'll likely never try this which is a crying shame considering how much I love Talisker 10 (pre-label change). For context, liquor stores near me have the NAS Storm at around $50-55, 10 at around $67, Distiller's Edition for around $100. The recent pricing lunacy in the whisky world has ratcheted up to dizzying levels. Something needs to be done. I'm in total support of those buyers that boycott these prices by simply not buying offending bottles. Actually I have a $100 rule. If its more than $100, its not happening. I realize this limits my options, but a line has to be drawn somewhere, and reversing the price increases of whisky has to start with sending a clear message to the powers that be. Let that stuff gather dust on the shelves.

    Picked up my only bottle of the 18 a few years ago. It's a very luxurious whisky. But that might be what's wrong with it. It's too pretty. And that's fine for a classic Highland or Speyside profile. But I think Talisker's profile lends itself better to youth. I'd take the 10 over the 18 all day long. I've never come across it, but I'd like to try some of their 8 year cask strength or an independent bottling. It's all subjective, of course. If someone has some cash to spend on a nice 18 YO, Talisker is a great option.

      Fair enough. You like what you like. And I 100% agree that Talisker is brilliant as a younger whisky. Youth works in its favour. BUT, the 18 is still my personal favourite from the line. Cheers! 🥃

    Well, if your game to look at the pole opposite, in terms of bang for buck, I’d recommend “Naked Malt”. Formerly known as Grouse.
    This whisky flys in the face of what I normally would drink - 40% abv, probably colored and chill filtered.
    Highland Park, Glenturret, Glenrothes and Macallan are / were the core ingredients. The final composition was matured in first-fill and refill American and European oak casks, then finished in first-fill oloroso Sherry butts for a further six months. It cost me Au$49. In my market I’m pressed to find what I like for under $100, and average $120.

    The last 2 months has seen 4 bottles of your Talisker 18 selling for around £90 - £100 plus postage. (fortunately I can collect) I would rather buy from a local independent shop but at 6 times the price of the 10yr old its just not possible!
    If brands like Deanston or Arran can sell their 18yr for just twice the price of entry level 12 & 10 then it's just greed from diagio!!! 😡

    The way the world is going I only see the demand for luxury like single malt going down. Yes the costs to manufacture are going stratospheric but if the vast majority of us wake up and find we don’t have a pot to piss in then surely we are staring at a whisky Loch that makes the one in the early 1980s look like a puddle.
