I’m not sure if this is common in other sitcoms, but one of my absolute favorite things about HIMYM is their willingness to completely shred the fabric of reality for a throwaway gag. It’s like watching a live-action cartoon.
Yeah writers didn't know when to stop and let it stay a mystery. For me the absolutely worst part of the ending wasn't that the mom died or that Ted went once again after Robin. My biggest disappointment by far was them revealing what "PLEASE" meant and showing that Barney was basically a fall guy.
AlbertOrnstein ok that’s not a good point of course, you have a good opinion, but I just can’t agree with you on the fact that finding out after all the time he said “hah please” they made please stand for something, you know. That’s just me of course. It’s kind of 50/50 but I mean I’d rather know that please was an acronym then just be left in mystery
What saddens me about this particular gag, is that they used it multiple times and ended it within a single episode, instead of slowly stretching it out for a season and a half or something. Considering that a lot of their comedy works that way and they do it surprisingly well, a shame they didn't do it with this one.
I agree, I think that would have been a great running gag! Kind of like how in My Name is Earl every single photo of him he always has his eyes closed.
One of the many things I love about this show - it plays with the fact that the narrator is a character, so you can at least imagine that the unrealistic moments are just him exaggerating (or maybe how the kids imagine it, either is fine.) Two similar things it does to allow unrealistic moments (which are actually stated in the show specifically) are have scenes where Ted admits that he can't remember exactly what happened, or scenes where he wasn't there, and only has the exaggerated version of the story one of his friends told him to go on. You can also add Ted's censorship attempts to this too.
You lose all awesome points as a hippie. So he was already awesome, then became a hippie and due to his hippieness became a loser. So when he quit being a hippie he regained his awesomeness
This scene ALWAYS cracks me up! Gotta love it! Btw, the camera hate's my guts! The camera wants to kill me. The camera wants to see me go down with the Titanic! The camera wants to burn me at the stake! Nah! The camera Adores me! Gotcha!

The real secret here is realizing that none of your “bad photos” are actually bad to other people. They’re just bad to you, so you can just act like you’ve never had a bad photo.
Mark Santiago there’s a reason for that. For the entire episode the perfect pose in a picture. Marshall and Barney are complete opposites in this context. By including Barney’s one bad photo at the end, would’ve been the perfect ending. It’s also the thing that the entire episode builds up to.
