6 Things I Did as an Actuarial Intern

  • As many of you know, I majored in Actuarial Science (with a minor in Statistics) at the University of Waterloo. In order to get credit for my degree, I also had to get internship/co-op experience. So, through my program, I was actually able to get 2 actuarial internships. My first internship experience was at a Property & Casualty insurance company, while my second was at a Life insurance company. Both of these gave me valuable experience and insight into the actuarial world; and gave me further confirmation that this was the career I wanted to pursue.
In today’s video, I’ll be talking about all the projects I worked on as an actuarial intern. Many of the tasks I performed were really interesting and even fun! But there was one task that I absolutely hated doing.. So, stay tuned to learn what I had to do at my internships that I absolutely HATED. (Hint: I saved the worst for last!)
And, don't forget to comment on this video (or any video I release in January), to get a chance to win the Comment Contest! That's $250 towards your next actuarial exam!! You can find more details here: etchedactuarial.com/comment_c...

I would really love to help. However getting internship means working on your credentials and skills. You may explore the basics, learn Excel or maybe a programming language. You may also keep an eye out for openings in insurance companies, consulting firms, or even government gigs. Networking and honing your skills is key, so hit up LinkedIn and connect with actuaries in the field. Hope this helps! 😊

In some countries (mainly third world countries) some companies will keep you working as an intern with an intern salary and without medical insurance for as long as they can, but you have all the responsibilities and are liable to all the legal consequences of your actions without a union to represent you.
