Built all three of the old M3 halftrack kits back in the late 1970s - MY favorite was the mortar version - I did a diorama with three of them pulled up behind a barn - supported by a Jeep with a communications crew.
These kits are great for those of us who do not want to spend six months on a 1,250 piece kit. For everybody who like U.S. WW2 vehicles, Takom just announced a new tool M29 Weasel. The only other injected molded version is Monogram's from 1957!

Nice precise update on the kits Hank, thx. The Jug and Willy's will be nice addition to the airfield. AA halftrack was one of best builds as kid, lasted long time playing with; when well used and broken up, fell prey to the Daisy .177, great, simple times :).
The MGMC was my pick back in your cutting mat video! I don’t mind the old toolings. For me they are a great way to work on accurizing(?) and weathering techniques.
It's about time Tamiya re-released the M3 half track! It's such an iconic vehicle and you see it in so many movies, like Kelly's Heroes for example! They are only available second hand here in UK and at crazy prices. Dragon make a few but are very expensive. The one with the 8 figures I shall definitely be getting when it arrives but possibly the other two as well because it doesnt seem they will be around for long! I also liked the last German sp gun again an old mould but I like vehicles that come with figures. I have built most of the 1/48 aircraft they are fine if not the most challenging kits around.
Finally the re-release of the M3 half track! They've been going for silly money on ebay for ages and sellers have become very greedy as some people have been daft enough to pay through the nose thus keeping the price high. I'll definitely pick a couple of these upwhen they're released as I need at least one for a Poteau dio I'm working on. Got the jeeps, got the M8's and an M20 plus an M5 so this is the missing vehicle. I found the long version of the German footage so can place the vehicles and figures in the correct positions and there are two great Alpine figures walking past the burning half track to use amongst others so once this finally appears I can push on with the build! Hoorah!
Up here in Canada got the recently released Do335 combo as previously it was a hard kit to find and the excellent relatively new KI-61 combo which I actually paid less than the KI-61 single kit. Both the newer Spitfire MKI and IL-2 combo look very tempting. You can never really go wrong with Tamiya from the 90's up :-) If only Tamiya would improve their decals they would be unbeatable.
I haven’t built a model in a long time, but I love watching the techniques I wished I knew at the time, (pre internet) Plus gotta stroke the algorithm. Thanks for showing off new kits 🍻
I just got the standard M3A2 personnel carrier version. I loved half-tracks as a kid, and finding American half-track kits is not easy. Glad that Tamiya re-released these, even if they are old-school. I only really care that it will build up nicely, and that's what Tamiya are known for. If you want a million tiny detail bits, get the Dragon.
After building the Dragon halftrack kits I can't go back to the Tamiya...though I do recognize they are iconic and I remember saving my money as a 8 year old to get the M16 kit...loved it.
Good video and model release update!!!! Have built ALL those 1:35 kits at one time or another and probably will purchase them again since my modeling skills have more-or-less "improved. Will get that WWII Marder for have built that one multiple times - just a fun little kit!!
I remember building that M3A2 Halftrack in the mid-70s - some years after I built Tamiya's 'Easy Eight' M4A3E8. That was their very first Sherman variant, I believe - but was also available alonside an M36 Jackson. Both models were designed to be motorised.
Mengs jumbo needed abit of rework done to the wider 3in skirt braces along the side as they were normal flat type as used the 76w hull for their jumbo kit but apart from that excellent kit! Built Asukas and have the new re realise in stash that asuka are bringing back out aswell I've got them all just waiting for the Asuka M2B1 ARV I built it when it was Tasca boxed butnits just asuka now and boxed with asuka name beautiful kit! One my favourites

I have been hoping that Tamiya would release all new versions of these kits. That said, this could help in bringing a new generation into the fold. With new kits costing anywhere from $50 to $100, very few young modeler are being introduced to the sickness.
I built up the M4A3E2 Jumbo kit a couple years back. Decent little kit. Can be some great weld bead practice as there's no molded in welds where the front and side add on armor meets.
I am really excited. The half tracks all look awesome and i cant wait to finally get a modern german Marder since no other manufacturer seems to be producing one currently

You are correct, one of these companies should come out with a new M3 halftrack kit, completely retooled. But, in the interim glad to see the Tamiya kit being released. I would get it just for the figures. The towed guns would also be a good addition to go with the halftracks. Good info there, thanks for compiling and putting it together.
According to the sticker on the box in my stash I paid $23 for the M21 mortar carrier back in 2016 so it they come in around $20 that's a heck of a deal.

I was building models way back in the ’70s and early ’80s. I seem to remember that when I was just wrapping up the hobby, I had to do some more adulting, there were a few kits that came out which were just cockpits. I believe they included an F-16, F-18, and maybe an F-4. I can’t remember what scale they were in, but I definitely remember thinking, “Hmmm, maybe just one or two more….” Does anyone else remember those, and are there any still available? I’m asking for a friend. 😏
Very cool. I was a huge Tamiya fan when I was a kid. Built both the M3A2 as well as the 81 mm mortar carrier. Great kits. I remember the figure set in the M3A2 being a particular draw. Speaking of halftracks, I also remember Monogram having a couple M3 variants available in 1/32 (APC, AA), but their quality was nowhere near the quality of the Tamiya kits at that time (but I built them anyway😁).
Stoked about the Quad version. Shep Paine had a classic diaorama based on it years ago. Cant wait to get my hands on it. In my stash I have an old APC and morter version. Dragon versions are so pricey.

Tamiya does little wrong and it's the top of the heap. However, unless they changed something, the Dora really didn't make it in terms of shape. As luck would have it, Eduard did a Dora and it wasn't very good either. The Hobby Boss Dora - released in the last couple of years - looks very good. Just for kicks I just finished a 1970s 1/48 Tamiya A6M2 - wanted to try out my version of the early Zero color. I've got another one - Eternal Zero - super weathered. If you don't mind low levels of detail especially in the cockpit the shape is splendid - absolutely nailed it. Fit is remarkably good - almost zero filler from a 50 year old kit. Tamiya newer 1/48 A6M3 and A6M2s are splendid - a cut above - and twice the price. From ten feet away, not sure how much better they are. Although the Tamiya IL2 is a terrific kit of an extremely important airplane. Every now and then I get in the mood for a diorama - really should try out some of Tamiya's 1/48 armor - go great with their planes. Sure wish Tamiya made WWI aircraft or ships - although the British WWI MKIV tank is terrific - even comes with a motor.
That Fw 190 bundle set certainly seems like something I'd instantly jump on... I'm just a bit worried about the fact that these kits are pretty old and haven't been improved or remade since. Would've preferred some modern remade kits, up to their usual quality, but if they're pretty cheap I guess i cant complain too much XD
YES...im over the moon with the release of these kits ,would also like to see Tamiya re release the single barrel 20 mil flak gun ,and a panzer 1 command tank will be a joy to see ,together with Rommel's 250 Greif .
DAMM, no BRITISH 6lb ANTI - TANK GUN… My first TAMIYA kit 1972… They could re- tool a few earlier kits..the GERMAN PARATROOPERS, BRITISH INFANTRY, just saying 🤷 I like the aircraft kits, been looking at some Russian Aircraft… GREAT UPDATE and REVIEW… I’ll keep watching CHRIS from OHIO 🇺🇸
Definitely looking forward to the reintroduction of the MGMC. My grandfather was a crew member in one. A scale reproduction of it will go perfectly with the shadow box I made to commemorate his service.
At last the US Half - Tracks are back , why did they ever disappear and leave us with the very expensive Dragon kits ? Like you all three will be on my buying list , I just hope they don't disappear to quickly again .
Three half tracks all priced rather reasonable plus 8 figures!! That alone will get my purchase if not two.. built the half track during summer of ‘early 60’s, many backyard war battles.
I do want to get the "meat chopper" M16. It looks just... Mean lean and so on 😁 and I am well aware that its old tamiya, so filling, sanding and some gaps are "extras" 😂 as was with flack88... Built it and Im happe with it, but the work required was more than I bargained with. But It was cheap and I have 88th in my collection.
@@SpruesNBrews considering the fact that there is not that much of "meat chopper" kits out there (Dragon, AFV, not counting in trumpeters 1:16 scale one) and they cost more ( but are new molds) tamiya offer sounds good for a price. Will look forward to see the rewievs and feedback on this one.
These old kits are far from poor. What I would like to see is a squad of 8 British infantry moulded to fit the M3 kit. British and Commonwealth forces used a lot of US vehicles.

I'm glad the kits are relatively cheap. It's gonna cost 2 or 3 times more for the photo etch and resin stuff we'll want to put on them.

Tamiya newer 1/48 A6M3 and A6M2s are splendid - a cut above - and twice the price. From ten feet away, not sure how much better they are. Although the Tamiya IL2 is a terrific kit of an extremely important airplane. Every now and then I get in the mood for a diorama - really should try out some of Tamiya's 1/48 armor - go great with their planes. Sure wish Tamiya made WWI aircraft or ships - although the British WWI MKIV tank is terrific - even comes with a motor.
That Fw 190 bundle set certainly seems like something I'd instantly jump on... I'm just a bit worried about the fact that these kits are pretty old and haven't been improved or remade since. Would've preferred some modern remade kits, up to their usual quality, but if they're pretty cheap I guess i cant complain too much XD

YES...im over the moon with the release of these kits ,would also like to see Tamiya re release the single barrel 20 mil flak gun ,and a panzer 1 command tank will be a joy to see ,together with Rommel's 250 Greif .

Definitely looking forward to the reintroduction of the MGMC. My grandfather was a crew member in one. A scale reproduction of it will go perfectly with the shadow box I made to commemorate his service.

At last the US Half - Tracks are back , why did they ever disappear and leave us with the very expensive Dragon kits ?

Three half tracks all priced rather reasonable plus 8 figures!! That alone will get my purchase if not two.. built the half track during summer of ‘early 60’s, many backyard war battles.

I do want to get the "meat chopper" M16. It looks just... Mean lean and so on 😁 and I am well aware that its old tamiya, so filling, sanding and some gaps are "extras" 😂 as was with flack88... Built it and Im happe with it, but the work required was more than I bargained with. But It was cheap and I have 88th in my collection.

@@SpruesNBrews considering the fact that there is not that much of "meat chopper" kits out there (Dragon, AFV, not counting in trumpeters 1:16 scale one) and they cost more ( but are new molds) tamiya offer sounds good for a price. Will look forward to see the rewievs and feedback on this one.
These old kits are far from poor. What I would like to see is a squad of 8 British infantry moulded to fit the M3 kit. British and Commonwealth forces used a lot of US vehicles.
