What does a Bus Operator do?

- The MTA employs almost 13,000 Bus Operators. Not only do they have to safely transport passengers to their destinations, they have to do it while overcoming the day to day challenges of operating a bus in New York City. Find out more about what they do.
After 26 years driving buses in the Bronx, when I look back it was a pretty good job. I sent three kids to college, never did without and was able to provide for my family. It was rough some days dealing with a thousand different personalities, but overall it was a good job. And, at the end of the day I got to retire with a generous pension and live comfortably. Retired seven years now and loving every minute of it.
A round of applause to every Bus Operator in NYC. I must especially commend those qualified to drive Commuter Coaches and Articulated Buses. They make it look so easy even in unfavorable circumstances.
There are always secrets to operating buses.
Articulated buses are actually pretty fun to drive!
Until you have to make a Three-Point Turn.
... Let alone reverse it.
@@dj__projects Haha! That's something you should never have to do with a bus like that but we are trained in this surprisingly!
I have alot of respect for bus operators between the farebeaters, Rude customers, break downs, Traffic and more. My uncle was a bus operator out of Fresh Pond Depot and I myself am a bus fan. Thanks MTA!
NYCT Enthusiast Cool!
I watch buses leaving for training out of Zerega

I am a 2nd generation Bus Operator too!!!!! My dad worked at the Gun Hill depot and retired and now I’m an operator at the West Farms depot. Both of us worked in the Bronx. Incredible.
West Farms is my favorite depot, I like watching the drivers because it fascinates me as to how you operate the busses. Thank you for what you do
How do I apply I got a permit please help
This MTA channel is very professional and informative, they should have more subscribers.
Agree
Because it’s ran by the mta
Sureeeeee
My father was a MTA bus driver for 26 years. He retired. Definitely give bus operators the respect. I’ve seen my dad in action with dealing asshole customers. He’s a lot happier and healthier since he retired. The wear and tear bus operators have to deal with certainly exists.
Next up: "What does a Subway Rat do?"

Please keep your comment to yourself. They dont have that.

Cool video..very realistic and it shows the more positive side of driving. It didn’t really go into the negatives..but that’s ok. Salute to all of the amazing MTA Bus Operators!!
What does a bus operator do? "You gonna learn today"
They whip them damn buses all over the city I’ve had this driver before on the 60 and I believe the 86 he’s really a class act
What a great spokesperson and employee . Kudos to the MTA for allowing such a highly qualified individual to speak for them . He is definitely one role model all of their employees should strive to be like. Keep on keeping on.
MTA seems to be releasing these videos every Wednesday, I like it
Frieza?
This is my dream job right now
Lol, this is my secondary. My primary is Train Operator.
@New York Bus Guy! Even though I'm not a New York City resident, but I enjoy riding the bus here in Chicago, feel free to check out my CZcams channel.
I'm neither! As soon as MTA has part time operators, I'll be one of them.

@@dj__projects ...Part time!!Hopefully that never Happens!!!
I have so much respect for MTA bus drivers, you guys are the best, I salute you!!
I’m a NYCTA bus operator. My job pays well and my kids are fed. Its what you make of it. Don’t worry about the fare and be safe. Most problems operators have they create for themselves.
I was invited to interview. Is the 6 week training paid?
@@BorntobeWild. absolutely
Buses that bend in the middle are called articulated buses. They can take sharper turns than standard buses, and they’re extra long and have an extra set of doors so they can carry more people!
I live in New York and I love To ride the bus since i was a kid as well i loved the Bus & Train riding 😊😊♥️ Being a Bus Operator is my future Job!
That's cool, and I hope it goes well by giving you a green signal

How was it?
Great review. Thank you for keeping the city safe.
Thank you guys for what you do!!!!
There is so much disrespect towards bus drivers where I live.
Bless the bus operators!🙏✊
I've been a bus operator going on 4 years, I drive commuters from VA to DC. But for the MTA operators I have to show them a lot of respect for what they go through with that busy jungle of a city.
My pops did 33 years between quill and the old Hudson depot. Drove all the cross towns and developed cancer due to diesel exhaust inhalation and working below canal street after 9/11 for years. Cole world isn’t it? Salute to New York’s finest 😊
Good job. Good Service. Good Responiblility. Thx Drivers!
These people have nerves of steel. Difficult but rewarding work.
I like this vid! We all have ups and downs with our jobs, but the main thing is, what he said.... getting through it and adding on, keeping your head up at all times!
So so hard and challenging
THANKYOU TO “regular “ people who are special and Hero’s at the same time
You are keeping everyone SAFE
YOU DESERVE KUDOS!!!!
Ah, his father worked at the Flushing depot, which is now the Casey Stengel Depot at Roosevelt Ave next to Citifield.
I will no longer say “bus driver” but “bus operator.” I like the distinction. I also loved the New York accent of the operator. I miss living in NYC but it is just too expensive-now I am back home in California that argument makes no sense at all. The Metro district here (Los Angeles) needs to try a series like this. It is good to see faces on the workers.
Nice semi documentary on NYCTA BUS. I like buses as well as trains. Very informative.
KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB GUYS👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Salute to all of the bus operators who drive safely for the passengers and very proud ❤😊
I have a lot of respect for operators, like c'mon they keep the city moving!
Especially in Singapore where having even a hatchback is a luxury. Without buses, Singapore stops. More or less.
Salute to all the MTA workers I love the MTA so much
Much appreciated.
Good to see the drivers cab now has a protective screen.
Yeees thx for the vid. I always wanted to be a bus operator
God bless these women & men
I drove one for a week in manhattan to practice for my road test was the most stressful week ever would never wanna do it full time.

MTA must bring a large bus on the b46 SBS as well as b82. If they can manufacture a LFS Select Bus Service on the Staten Island division, then people don't have to worry about over crowding conditions.

It’s a very interesting job especially for retirement I am interested in real estate and yes hopefully when I retire in Real estate I may be a bus operator who knows what the world brings me
Here in Norway the driver is in a separate compartment and must only focus on driving (automatic doors, pay trough app). I wonder if the drivers like it, it seems a bit lonely
@Joe Bloggshere's a photo of the bus, yeah maybe it's pretty chill for the driver 😄 photos.app.goo.gl/gUAcQ1jY98zqtTWUA
Not trying to hate, but I think you forgot to include the part where the drivers all congregate at the terminal and then all start their routes at once. Usually see 3-4 buses at once where the first is late, second is on time (so fair enough for them to be back to back), but the 3rd and 4th are ahead of schedule. Yet, they all form a bus train lol
As yoda would say.... “ clueless you are”
Kind of already know. Watched my father at the end of a route and at the beginning of a route, and of course the in between.
I'm just learning how a bus operator drives the bus so that way, no bus would cause a crash into any street in New York. To be honest, I am learning how to drive safely.
I always show respect to bus operators bc when some of them not nice you just don't get upset you know because most ppl does that crazy stuff a lot I watch this video and ppl just get mad at the operator it so sacre my uncle wants to be a bus driver in upstate that what he told my mom and my grandma and my brother and me my dream is to become a bus operator at Jamaica depot with the routes
When I always drive I always let bus go
MTA a EXCELLENT job. great incentive, job security and pension retirement...you can't get better than that. Private sectors job don't even give you a third of what MTA gives you. MTA the greatest transit system in the world.
Don’t be fooled. The MTA isn’t given you those wages. It’s the unions representing transit workers that are fighting for you to get the wages, pension, sick time and benefits.
This is my dream job. Buses or trains!!
Adam Alicea the test iis our take it
Adam Alicea it took me 14 months to get in... then a week training it’s better to have your cdl but they help you if you have your permit. But if you get in and take the road test twice with the mta and fail they kick you out lol
ZRowedaArtist Views Very informative comment, I’m currently on the waiting list I already have my CDL, I pray to god everyday for that letter or phone call 🙏🏼

I’m a kid and kids get free metro cards so when I left mine at home, this bus driver wants to come and be like, “the bus isn’t free you know” and he’s giving me crap about it. He does this to every kid that gets on the bus with him.
you talk to him or you just hop on?
@@tommyg4842 the bus is free for students and the mta doesn't get any money from it

Bus operator? You mean driver? In Australia, the operators are companies that have won a contract to run bus services in a particular area, usually for 10 years.
Andrew Situ in NYC they aren’t bus drivers, they are bus operators. There’s a difference. An Australian, with all due respect, wouldn’t understand the difference.
I never met any friendly or polite MTA bus driver. You say "hello" they look at you and won't answer to you. One night, in 2010, me and my ex-wife (She was Black and I'm White) took the bus in the city, I don't remember where we were heading but it was late at night. The bus driver was a Black male, he yelled at us to leave the bus and told her that she should be ashamed to be with someone like me. She asked him she he meant, and he replied "You know what I'm talking about, sister."
Wow . Shame on him for being judgmental and unprofessional. Sometimes you come across a bad apple in the bunch. I retired a few months ago after serving almost 28 years as a bus operator and I assure you we aren’t all like that. I retired with 10 passenger commendations and no complaint
Should have told him she was on the clock.
It's simple. They operate buses. Also, my upstairs neighbor operates routes out of East New York.

For people claiming robots are right around the corner, not so fast. This would take a lot of years to be 100% compliant city governments. Their not trying to hear any type of multi-million dollar lawsuits even from 1 incident. There's plenty of time to apply and retire robots aren't coming any time soon.
They need to have dedicated bus lanes, and ban cars in the busiest parts of the citites.
Kilo Byte Why would you.
@Kilo Byte I do Asshole.
@Kilo Byte The actual fuck is the point of owning and driving cars in Manhattan lmfao
@@physetermacrocephalus9986 To get from Point A to Point B smartass.
Going out on a limb here but I’m gonna assume they probably operate the bus
longer buses are better than short buses in case of overcrowd traffic and car pedestrian on the side of the road in case of a double parking area by trucks and taxis for loading and unloading passengers, merchandise, and food.
Christian Luyando your statement proves to me you have no practical experience in surface transit.

In a couple of years you will see robots driving buses.
PhantomMatrix They are certainly getting closer, but the robots still struggle with pedestrians and chaotic situations - both of which are a big part of driving a bus. The robot would have to be absolutely reliable, because no city is going to take the risk that it would fail even once, since it’s a new technology.
This would take a lot of years to be 100% compliant with city governments, their not trying to hear any type of multi-million dollar lawsuits even from 1 incident. There's plenty of time to apply and retire, robots aren't coming any time soon.
