  • A look into making a skew chisel, from handle to heat treating the steel.
I made my own skew chisel, and all of my own lathe chisels from simple tool steel from the Amazon and a little bit of patience. It might not be a fancy Sorby one but I am still proud of it.
This one will be auctioned off for charity soon, check out althoffwoodshop.com/blog for details.

I imagine that you have figured out that you should have cut the bevel on the end before hardening.

No, I have done both ways. I beveled before hardening on the last one and the tip overheated and increased the grain size of the steel making it weaker (that old one dulls quickly on maple). With the slow speed grinder, i was able to ease in pretty good bevels in under an hour (or what seemed like less than an hour) Now if you don't have a slow speed grinder, I definetely recommend doing the bevels prior and keeping an eye on the tip to make sure it doesnt get bright yellow.

Hummmm. I have never had that problem. ever! but then again I have been doing it for 40 years too.

I'm just a dude with tools having fun :-) That's how it was explained to me, I always welcome more info though!

What is the angle of the bevels?

Based on 5:53 and 6:00 it looks like it could be around a 50° angle

2:50 what is the meaning of this?

Heat treating the steel so it holds an edge. The steel is O1 tool steel. I heated to 1500 degrees F at which point it becomes non magnetic, it’s “critical” temperature. Then cooling it in oil quickly drops the temp and “freezes” the structure inside the steel (I’m not a metallurgist and probably missing a lot of detail here). At this point the steel is very hard but very brittle. So putting it in the oven for an hour at a low (comparatively) temperature trades some of that hardness for toughness.
