I consider those to be clickbait videos. Can't tell everyone not to use VPNs, then turn around and tell viewers you use them in certain cases. It'd be nice if these channels would be a bit more honest with viewers, especially the ones pushing the "make your own VPN" message.
Sure it might be easy to set up, but most of the creators fail to mention the burden of maintanence falls on the user. Given that most people are lazy when it comes to security updates as it is, I consider that little caveat a mandatory message.

Dude, you have 3-way SLI in your computer? BTW, "Are VPNs Honeypots" repeats itself. I thought I was going crazy for a sec, there.

I challenge you Tom. Create an Amazon, Oracle etc.. account, make a free tier VPS instance, install some VPN server software then give away the VPN login so everyone can use it. I want you to see what happens. I want you to see if capitalism will magically keep your account active.

Only the people who don't fully understand how the internet works don't use the VPN.
Spin your own VPN? Here are a few points why it's dumb.
    1) You bind yourself to a singular IP/location
    2) Do you think that nobody can track and log you now? Misunderstanding. You are rending a VPS and a VPS lives inside the Matrix; it's virtualized. Meaning: an observer can always see everything you do whenever they want. Do I hear "use a Dedicated Server in a safebox"? C'mon, have you seen the prices for this kind of equip? That is not what a general user is willing to pay for a VPN relay.

      1. it does not help you bypass geolocation restrictions, plus anyone tracking you know your locations.
      2. Not so sure, your traffic passes through the VPS provider's infrastructure and would not necessarily be visible to an observer. They would have access to much o much of your metadata
You're correct that using a dedicated server in a safebox would be expensive and impractical for the average user. Most individuals don't have the resources or technical expertise to maintain and secure their dedicated server infrastructure.
