The Knödel you had, was a potato dumpling, basically ... and yes, you had the right idea, it's purpose is to be eaten with lots of the gravy :)
The Schweinshaxe is usually eaten with fork and knife lol... but there’s nothing wrong to just DIG IN! I love it! Next time you have a chance, definitely give Semmelknödel a try... it's a bread dumpling and is also eaten with either a Schweinebraten or with a Schwammerlsoße (mushroom cream sauce).
Munich is so big... there are so many things to see! Did you happen to go inside the Frauenkirche that was around the corner from Marienplatz? Next time, definitely check out Schloss Nymphenburg and its beautiful park. Then there is the Münchner Residenz. So many museums and galleries... the Alte/Neue/Moderne Pinakothek are a must see, if you're into history/art. München also has the largest Technik Museum of the world. So so so many things there... The Tierpark Hellabrunn is a very popular zoo in München. www.muenchen.de
Gosh... watching you guys explore, makes me miss home SOOOOOO much! I used to work in München.

You are speaking out of my soul! I only can agree with everything you wrote! (And Semmelknödel > Kartoffelknödel, but Breznknödel > Semmelknödel! And yes, it is Brezn, not Prezel ;) )

I have...well, somewhat. Because for one, it wasn't a proper Schweinshaxe but some honey coated thing which is actually sold at Disney World, and two, the women eating it was an American, who apparently bought it as some sort of snack to eat it in line. One of the strangest thing I have seen my whole live.

Great to see you having such a good time in my home town Munich. Looking forward to see part two. It would probably be a good idea to have a few more days to explore Munich because there is so much to do and to see. Next time you're in Munich and it is so hot, take the U-Bahn to station Thalkirchen Tierpark (line 3) and walk over to the Flaucher which is a great place or area with beautiful gravel banks in the river Isar where you can go swimming, relaxing and cool off in the cold, refreshing Isar water, even with Milla, because there are so many little pools and puddles. But a warning: some people may go into the water there buck naked, which is pretty common in Germany at some places, so don't be surprised :-).

Actually, I have the same question as you have about Schweinshaxe. I know it is meant to be eaten with cutlery but the knives you get are in no way able to cut through the crust. Just taking a bite out of it looks like the way better option.

When my son was Willa's age, one of his favourite meal was dumplings (both potato and bread dumplings) with gravy. I actually do not need the meat at all - even if you might need the meat to get a good sauce flavour. Potato dumplings usually are made half and half - half with cooked, half with raw potatoes - some potatoe starch and an egg added. Whereas bread dumplings are made from old bread, buns, or brezn - some egg and milk - sometimes onions and bacon added. His other favourite meal was the beef broth with bone-marrow dumplings my grandma made.

If you plan to come to the Bamberg area again within the next months, make sure you don’t miss ‚Karpfen gebacken‘ in one of the small villages in this area. It is fried carp fish, comes with potato salad, and is one of the regional and seasonal specialties here, only to get from September to April. It’s really delicious with edible crusty fins… also comes sometimes as ‚Karpfen blau‘, cooked in some slightly sour wine/vinegar broth with vegetables, butter and cooked potatoes. For example in Rothensand, or Schönbrunn, or you ask people at some gas station in the region where to get some good Karpfen…
I‘ll also think about some nice places in the Fränkische Schweiz, Wiesent Tal between Hollfeld and Bamberg is really lovely and beautiful for example.

Yes, Semmelknödel for sure with a Schweinshaxe. There different ways how to eat a Weisswurst try to find out. Next time in Munich I can recommend the German Museum with the Planetarium, may be still exist the mining section with a walk it feels like to be in an underground mine, and the technical part is interessting too. Bit outside in Geiselgasteig the Bavaria Filmstudios. Make a tour thru different movies and centuries and the next 2 days will be booked out. Just notice if you come across the butcher of Vinzenzmurr in Bavaria just go for it, same to the butcher Brandl in Landshut and ask for meat to go in a Brötchen, sorry in bavaria its called Semmel(my first experience when I lived and worked for 2 years in Munich. Well, once you should get the experience the atmospere in a fully booked out soccer stadium. Tanner, good to see your aim to speak german. German isnt an easy language and sometimes the pronounciation is important. Here the example: Das Objekt umfahren. The word umfahren has two different meanings depending on the pronounciation. :-D Try to figure out Have a nice weekend and all together enjoy each day with new experiences here in Germany.

The yellow "Knödel" are the go to side dish for roasts and also the favourites of little kids. Knödel with gravy … If you liked the Schweinshax’n (pork leg) make sure you get Schäufele (small shovel, because its the pork shoulder bone) in Nuremberg. The best pork roast you will find. make sure you get a good one and check before you go, they are limited at many places and not available every day.

I went to Munich June 2016 and stayed 5 or 6 days I cant remember. I walked so much lol and saw a couple of these places. At the time I didnt realize the english garden was where the river surfing was but I sat there and ate at the beer garden but the next day I was extremely sick either food poison or the heat and beer but yeah I was stuck in my hotel next day. I went to the radio tower in the olympic park at the top they had the rock n roll hall of fame and you could see the entire city and mountains around munich. I also went to the bmw museum next door and saw all the cars. Also went to the Nymphenburg Palace but didn't get to see inside so hopefully next time and to see the Munich Residenz. There is just so much to see and do it takes days or weeks. Munich was one of my favorite places in Germany so far. Hope to go again
