Fleetwood Mac ~ Tusk 1979 Disco Purrfection Version

- I'm a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac and own the original Buckingham Nicks LP that got them invited to join the legendary rock band. After Rumours, I wondered where they were going to go and I got my answer in the fall of 1979. "Tusk" was the first single issued and was the strangest anthem I ever heard. The marching band added a surreal but exciting layer to the dense African rhythms played out by Mick Fleetwood and the native sounding exhortations and chants of Lindsey Buckingham.
"Tusk" has been compared to those total change of pace experimental LP's like The Beatles "White Album", but was not as groundbreaking as it was head scratching. The rest of the album had a fuzzy, dreamlike feel to it. The songs "That's All For Everyone", "Over And Over" and "Sara" immediately come to mind. The production style was not as sharp as previous or subsequent releases until 2003's "Say You Will" which kinda felt like Tusk 2 to me.
I was at a record show and found the Fleetwood Mac The Chain box set which had alternate versions of "Tusk" and the first appearance of "Silver Springs" on CD, which is really the reason I bought it. "Silver Springs" was on the B side of "Go Your Own Way" back in 1976 and not made available until The Chain Box set that presented it in a crystal clear production that defies time. That song was perfect FM fodder and has graced my home on more than one occasion played at top volume with its impeccable production and a star making turn by writer/singer Stevie Nicks.
When Lindsey Buckingham took a larger part in the new sound the band gave him special credit on the album. He took the sound of the band back a step with less ornate orchestrations and deftly folded in elements of new wave and punk rock for an album that cost an unheard of sum of at least one million dollars, making it a first in the recording industry. It went double platinum despite the fact that the RKO radio chain played the album in its entirety before it was commercially released, the publicity allowed scores of Fleetwood Mac fans to be ready with their recorders and possibly diminished the sales, according to John McVie.
"Tusk" peaked at #8 and stayed in the top 10 for three weeks and is notable for being one of the first songs mixed down digitally from the original analog tapes. The song came about when Mick asked Lindsey to flesh out the rehearsal riff he was using for sound checks. It was recorded at an empty Dodger Stadium along with the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band. The effort earned The Trojan marching band a record for the highest number of musicians performing on a single which was videotaped for future play.
The beat here is steady and driving, the bass sonorous and hypnotic, and I love it and knew I could have some fun with it...not disco by any measure, but it sure feels like something that would sound tribal and gut shaking in a club with the bass boosted. So here is my take on this classic Fleetwood Mac tune, which was a hit this time of year back in 1979. It got this great pounding tribal beat which would sound pretty awesome bassed up over the club speakers.... - Hudba

This version is heaven.

OVER HEAVEN
Nah it’s Made in Heaven
Knockin on Heaven’s Door, more like.
I'm so glad I grew up in the, 7ys.😊
Absolutely agree with you
Who else was a 70s kid with cool sh*t like this playing on background radios?? We were too young to party, but our ears soaked it up!! Love and miss this era!
This song is incredibly catchy and now you can hear the G Major chord big time. Never realized how much I was missing until I heard this version.
Man, I can't get John's bass line and Mick's percussion out of my head. Two super human musicians.
*Insert sbr reference*
Christine McVie is saying “don’t tell me that you love me (guys BS to get laid) “ She’s saying “ just tell me that you want me!” The song is primal and honest and genuine and I absolutely love it!
Lindsey Buckingham wrote and sang this song, not Chris. And it’s about the Mick and Stevie affair.
@@anitastarr4445 Really. I always thought it was Lindsey's reproach to CARROL ANN whom he was in a relationship, for her too much seeing of D. Wilson, who happened to be in a relationship with Cristine (and a super player, which is why Lindsey asks "Why don't you ask him the latest on his throne?"), and with whom Lindsey sensed (and maybe rightly so given the FM lifestyle) Carrol was having an affair. Hence the phone call "why don't you tell me what's going on?, why don't you tell me who is on the phone?". Meanwhile Stevie was banging Mick, who was not a player like Wilson, wrecked the marriage with his wife, only to get a dose of her own medicine being dumped by Mick 3 months later for her best friend. During that interlude she and Lindsey were on and off thing in the shadows (their rekindling, friends with benefits style, even making music together since B/N apart from FM, on John Stewart's album). The subtlety of this song is while Lindsey is confronting the situation, she is vocally in the shadows (no doubt art imitating life). Tusk is truly a masterpiece. The lifestyle burnt Lindsey to the point he made a song about it in Law and Order, criticizing it retrospectively, now that he had withdrawn from being on his own. by tango, he was done with it but the rest were not, and the taking him for granted (them oblivious they were doing it. A habit. Mick admits it in his 2nd bio) reached a limit where he just left.
Totally out-of-this-world PERCUSSION PERFECTION!!!!! Can't we go back to that era of music??? Memories flooding my mind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does anybody know of any existing video of this?
Here it is! czcams.com/video/InjF8xj93LU/video.html
DJDiscoCatV2 OH, THANK YOU!! This is like getting a present when you weren't expecting anything! I'm going to watch it now!
This, Godsmack's voodoo, and Whitestripes's Seven nation Army.
Wahoo!! Never thought I could love "Tusk" more. I was wrong, this version Is KILLER!!!
There are two kind of people in this coment section:
Jojo fans talking About some criple dude who spins and has a pink fridge
And music experts who describes the maravellous of this version and song.
I hope that this stays on CZcams forever
I was 30 when Tusk hit the radio, and this answers lifelong wishing it ran longer. Thank you sir! Absolutely amazing.

La historia de un hombre que no sólo volvió a caminar físicamente, sino que también espiritualmente
This song has the official seal of approval from The President of the United States Funny Valentine.
I bought the "Tusk" album in 1980 not having heard any of the tracks, but because I wanted to know more about that band. A leap of faith. I still have my original copy from back then. One of my favorite albums of all time.
Real savage-like.
Mick or John?
I love how the end of the song are just repeating the same notes again and again just like Tusk Act 4 that makes things spins again and again infinitely.
I can`t get it out of my head, still a fantastic song, especially with your headphones on.
I listened to this literally 84 times!
Well! That's the closest I've had to a spiritual experience for a good while. Bloody awesome!
Almost 40 years old and this song has IT!
Well.... I am 70 years old.... and I think that this song HAS IT!!!!!
I know.... HAHAHAHAHA! You meant the SONG is almost 40!!!
That Horn section, is so Awesome, along with Everything else, about This Song.......
This is absolutely magical. Thank you so very much for this delightful remix. Dark Disco is rare and this one is one of the rarest as remixes go. Great work.
Been waiting 35 years for this remix!
Phil kicking ass in the pilot episode of the series The Americans...
The music of the 70s and some 80s was extremely well crafted. Tusk is a true masterpiece, and this extended mix is amazing. You'll never hear such creations again as today's music truly sucks
Andrew omg le wrong generation
Shut up there’s so much music being made that’s still amazing, you clearly just aren’t looking
IF you can call it music!
Totalmente de acuerdo
It's clear DJ disco cat has mixing skills for real🤙🏾
Just reminding me why I love Fleetwood Mac! This tribal sound is so infectious. Describing their sound as dreamlike is exact. It always takes me to a distant place. This is simply spiritual! ❤
I will never ever ever get this song out of my head. It's a part of me. The drums! That beat! And the marching band! FUCKING BRILLIANT! And then Christine and her accordian! No song has ever been so cool. There's just no way to describe this....otherworldly would be the only word I can come up with.
you expressed my feelings exactly. TUHSK!
Dont forgett the parts with the dinosaur jockey and killing the president for jesus
Marching Band: USC (University Of Southern California) Trojans. At the time, they gaining popularity outside of LA, and the only college band to play on a #1 record.
You knocked this one out of the park. Kiss that one goodbye! Awesome!!!!!
I always liked this piece of music from USC marching band..and I am a Notre Dame fan... good job Trojan Nation 👍
In 1980, when USC came to Notre Dame to play their annual football game, the USC band played Tusk..no one applauded...
I can actually feel four acts within this version.
This is such a great mix! I love your stuff a lot. It's also fun to see all the JoJo fans in the comments.
Great job!!! I got this album as soon as it came out in 1979 too!! Awesome and bizarre song, especially back then.
All this enhanced percussion stomping in our ears make this version even greater! Loved it🥰
fantastic sound clear sharp brill.
This song was amazing back then and still is in 2021
Well Disco Cat you’ve done it again! Loved it!
the original version always left me unsatisfied why couldnt it be twice as long? but damn this version makes me sweat sitting still.
A jockey from Kentucky and a man from the Vatican meet at their lowest and die at their highest, never abandoning the other.
Thank you, Gyro.

DJDiscoCatV2 :D !!!!
You are my favorite. Thank you for these great gems, and for keeping it true to the original, and not over doing it. I love these mixes and the song being longer is even better. You really should release these because as a deejay, I can never find remixes that don’t completely destroy the song.
First track I have put on loop in years!
Many thanks!
This song is so much fun to loop on end after a #USC #RoseBowl victory. I am going to use this version for a vid highlighting the 2017 Rose Bowl Game. A link back to your work will be added. Thanks a lot and #FightOnForever!
This song was MEANT to be played loud! It just doesn't work if it's not blowing your eardrums out. Sigh, I know I'm getting old because I Bitch all the time that they just don't make bands like this anymore. Well, the truth is.....the don't. Seriously, the last great decade for music was the 80's. Nothing is new anymore. Nothing is innovative. Nobody has to work their way up from scratch any longer. They just show up on these stupid telly shows, and someone hands them a contract 4 months later. Then all they do is release a CD full of lame cover versions.
But thank you for this party version of Tusk. I cranked it up, closed my eyes and smiled.
I crank this up and i'm 44.
Oh hell yeah!!!!! This is the song you blast your car windows out to while cruising the city streets, inviting the entire city to listen along with you, and if you don't get at least one person from the street to shout "TUSK", you play it LOUDER!!
Brett Blumfield Oh, God yes! The louder the better. And if you're not getting a response it's because you're surrounded by stupid kids who don't know what real music Is! Honestly, this generation needs to be strapped down and forced to listen to all music between the 60s through the 80s, so they understand what REAL music is , not this drivel they claim passes for music. Fleetwood Mac, Foreigner, Lynyrd Skynrd, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, AC/DC (the Bon Scot years; not that I have anything against Brian, but Bon was pretty crazy), classic Rolling Stones, David Bowie when he was Ziggy Stardust and the Thin White Duke....I mean, the list is practically endless. Even the groups from the New Romantic Era of the 80s: The English Beat, Wham!, Duran Duran, Crowded House, INXS, et al. All of these bands started at the bottom, and paid their dues, working little holes in the wall till they got their break. What do these so-called "musicians " do these days? They supposedly "audition " for a television show and just a few months later, hey, presto! they're as famous as the people I mentioned previously? No! I can't deal with these see self righteous punks thinking they're anywhere close to the real deal.
ecclestonsangel I'm 24 and I think this better than the garbage most of my generation listens to
holy shit you actually right
This song turned me into a cripple with a bug bite fetish
Up......grade?
This reminds me of the time when I was in a horse race across America
Absolutely superb. I just love how you isolated Mick's drums and John's bass. I like this more than the original. I couldn't get my feet to stop.
What an Aewsome intro!! Love this song and this extendd version just makes the original even better!!!

Awesome an does sound good really loud!
I had to sneak this album into the house, then use a ball point pen, blue to be exact, and color in some of the, what my mother called, "pornographic artwork", before I was allowed to bring the album out of my bedroom and play it on my Dad's Stereo in the living room. My Dad had these huge honkin' speakers too. Tusk sounded awesome, like it does now coming over my computer with a 90 dollar set of headphones!! LOL. Anyway, aftert I graduated High School and went to college and moved out, not only had this album grown on my mother, but she started to like the more modern POP music and rock music.
My Dad started playing LOUD music after we kids left home!! LOL. I came home one day to vcisit, and heard the stereo blasting four houses away! I could feel the base vibrating through my feet as I approached the porched, my Mom had the Stereo so loud, playing: LINDSAY Buckingham: Trouble, then another hit by Christine Mcvie, and then I laughed as she played "Jump" by Eddie Van Halen." I had never heard THAT before. She had teased me about Fleetwood Mac being wild. Oh brother! So that was that--she never teased me again about my TUSK album!
God rest her soul, she died three years ago, this coming August 17th, 2018. I still miss her. She and my Dad were married almost 55 years! I will be 59 in December. I see my Dad every week and we play music together all day and visit. WE love music! God bless. Thanks for posting!
Tremendo... Me gusta ... Gracias
