I sank at least 100 hours into this game as a pre-teen and am now just getting into DCS in my 30's, I've found I still retain some of the muscle memory from this game, fantastic sim for its time!

That's the reason this was the first video series I made, as I spent a lot of time playing USNF '97 as a kid, and with the exception of the non-specific aircraft select screen and the lack of some of the music from USNF'97, this really is the superior game!
This game was way ahead of its time. Endless planes, weapons, stages, and even had online gameplay!
Understatement.
With this game, I was flying the F-22, F-35, and X-32 set in a future war Russia vs Ukraine in 1997!
I still want to know if the Atomic Moth is a real aircraft, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is.
If I knew how to get the game to run on Win10, I would make a video to show it in game.

I got all of Jane’s disks, and it was so awesome! The best simulator out there! Jane’s Anthology and Jane’s F-15E Strike Eagle were my favorite. Now I’m starting on DCS. Getting back in the cockpit!
One of my favorite games of all time! I remember playing this when I was 14 in 1998 and 1999. So many planes to choose from but my favorite was the F-22 because of the stealth, speed, and maneuverability in dogfights. I remember there was a cheat to unlock over 100 levels. I loved playing this online with dialup against other online players. The dogfights and missions were fun. I bought a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick that made the game more fun and easier to play. Great combat simulator. I loved video games in the 90s.
I have a peculiar memory with the F-22 in this game...since my dad wasn't savvy enough to know about game patches and I was too young to know about the internet, we had version 1.0. One of the missions had you start with a CSG out in the ocean in an F-22 ready on one of the catapults (the game would take artistic liberty like that sometimes). I believe a similar experience was mentioned in the video above, but the computer we had by then ran the game so well that _it played that particular mission too fast,_ and I would always crash the jet coming off the cat. Dad got a little program called WinThrottle to do the same thing a turbo button on a PC would have done about a decade prior (i.e. slow the CPU down considerably). Worked like a charm.
It was only when I found the CD years later and got it running on my computer that I learned that they had patched that issue with game speed by version 1.02. Thing is, once I installed that patch, something didn't feel right; it was as if the game was consistently _very slow._ I'm certain I just got used to how fast our old computer ran it and thought it was normal lol
@@harp2707 The only time I had a problem with the game being too fast was when I tried to run it in a modern day emulator. The PC I had in the 90s didn't have that problem with either versions.
@@eugenebroski this was quite a ways into the 2000s; we had a core 2 duo processor by this point so it was considerably faster than required lol
Still one of my favorite games. I had USNF (not 97) and ATF in the mid-late 90's as a kid. I loved ATF but always had problems running it consistently. I found out about FA in 2004 and bought it off ebay. Still love firing it up now and again and tinkering with the toolkit. Amazing that it still works so well even on Win10.

My father was a weapons systems operator in the F-4/E and I remember him laughing when he saw his old steed in this game.

@@Splinter00S No he flew in the 1980s. He was mostly a liasion officer (for the sake of brevity) [The F-4 did not have MFDs]. He deployed in Desert Shield/Storm with the Army (he relieved his CO (O-5) of command for incompetence and cowardice, de facto not de juro as he was and O-3 at the time and none of the O-4s stepped up). He still works with military aircraft.

Unfortunately they only offer individual aircraft at high prices. It'll cost a bundle for anyone to have something similar to Fighters Anthology.
I never realized the Tu22Ms were so detailed in the game. I usually killed them way beyond visual range :D

M1 tank platoon 2, diablo 2, myth of the fallen lords and Jane's fighter anthology are the games of my childhood.
In order to hide the waypoints, you just hide the aircraft. They're both interconnected. If you need any mission building tips, feel free to contact me. Also, I have txt files of tips in my FTP found on my website.
Ah, makes sense, although that's kinda a bummer, I'd like to remove the waypoints without hiding the objects. Oh well.
And I'll probably reference those, as I think I'm going to refine this scenario a bit more!
@@Splinter00S I'll build a mission in 1/2 to 1 hour,, and then spend several hours fine-tuning it. My Vietnam campaign missions average about 12 hours per mission (mostly flying the mission, then tweaking the faults found), and that doesn't include the research I did to get details about the mission. The coverted campaigns (i.e. Baltic 1976 and the upcoming Kurli 2018) take about half the amount of time.
Yeah, that sounds about right. I think I spent a month day and night working on the first two missions in a campaign I had planned to make for Descent Freespace 2 back in high school, and that one didn't need all the historical research FA campaigns (should) have!
@@stephentoth6646 Actually I didn't know about it as a kid. I didn't even know about Fighters Anthology, I only had Jane's USNF '97. I'm becoming familiar with JFATK though since I've had to use it multiple times to unpack campaign missions so I could replay them when I had technical difficulties with a recording!
Just discovered this game and was looking for some tips. I can't believe it even works with my modern USB rudder pedals with no issues.
Nice! I tried but couldn't get it to work with my complete HOTAS+pedals set, but it didn't recognize anything but the joystick so I've been using the twist axis for ruddering.
@@Splinter00S we used to use CH flightsticks or thrustmaster...now I have a not as old Saitek AV8R-01...
@@timsgta When I was a kid I had an old Logitech joystick, nothing fancy but it was a real workhorse, so much so that when our gameport version finally failed, we replaced it with an identical joystick that connected through USB instead of gameport

Love your videos and been playing the game a lot with keyboard. Dug out my saitek cyborg evo but I just can't get it to work in game. Thrust and twist rudder both work but no the X-Y axis on the stick, nor any of the buttons sadly
The only thing I can think of to check is make sure there aren't any more axes on your joystick, the game can be dumb in picking what it considers the x and y of the joystick. Also, make sure you don't have any other game controllers plugged in, as it may default to trying to use them. One last thing you could try is to try and emulate your joystick as a generic 3-axis 4 button joystick, but I don't know how well that would work.
@@Splinter00S With an Xbox 360 controller also plugged in, setting the stick as the prefered device in Win 10 settings did the trick, although it did not work when it was the only controller connected. Even weirder is the xbox controller used to work with the game but now it does not want to. Thank you for the tips, now is time to truly enjoy this game as intended with a stick!
Hello my friend .. greetings from Chile .. I have a problem downloading the janes from the link that you mentioned and the radar does not show it is transparent apparently it is ai but it is transparent ... thanks for uploading the game I have been looking for it for years
What sort of download problem? As far as the radar goes, if you hit esc in-flight, go to the windows tab and make sure that the radar is checked, otherwise you can toggle it with shift-9 iirc
Damn! I almost forgot how easy carrier landings were back in the golden age of sims compared to DCS! Air to air refueling too!
Unfortunately it doesnt work on my PC with Windows 10... it used to work last year. Now? Nothing. I can turn the game on. I choose a mission. Click "Play". And nothing..
i have like zero experience mounting ISOs in 7zip since windows 10 usually does it for me, and i really can't seem to set this up right. can you give me a slightly more detailed rundown on how to do it?, i also haven't watched the whole video because i don't want to get my first impressions spoiled. can i get some help?
If you've downloaded Daemon Tools Lite (which I personally use), when you open it up there should be what looks like a CD in the bottom tray titled quick mount. Just left-click on that and navigate to where you saved the FA_1_00F.iso and select the file. It will then make a new labeled drive (like E: or F:) with the iso loaded. At that point just run the installer from the """disc""" and just make sure you have the iso mounted when you play the game.
I miss this game, still have the box and both cd's and everything that came inside the box with it in great condition, just need an external cd drive, but is it compatible with windows 11? Or what would i need to make it work?

Fairly certain the license for the Defender of the Fleet album relates ONLY to the DCS F-14 and videos made around it, not for other games.
I remember I had the same question when I first made this video and emailed them asking about it, and they must have told me it was alright since I posted the video. It's going to be moot in a month or so anyways because I have plans to delist this video once I make an updated version.

I cant get cockpit view to work. The BS button toggles it but mine is grayed out. Its always full screen?
What do you mean by cockpit view? Do you mean the cockpit frame that surrounds the HUD? Because that only shows up when the game is set to 800x600 or lower, it will not work for 1024x768.

Not quite, you have to install the patch, but it's included along with the isos
@@Splinter00S I am sorry but I have the game installed and the CPU grab. I set the affinity to 0 and the gameplay is still fast. Am I doing something wrong or do you have any other suggestions? Thank you
Did you copy the FA102.exe to your computer and run that? If you install that patch you shouldn't need any cpu tools to keep the frame rate stable

Wish I could be of more help, but I'm the lucky guy that had everything work on the first go lol. The one thing I can think of is that because the game's default install path is the C drive, you'd need admin privileges for the patcher but windows should ask for those automatically.
Just installed and gave the game a shot. Would you happen to know/recall what the patch executable is called for the game?
The patch executable is fae102.exe and the game runtime executable is FA.exe iirc

The campaign missions or just any mission period? If the campaign missions it could be a problem with playing the videos, if any mission probably some sort of graphics issue. Unfortunately I can't provide any more support than that because I did not have any involvement in making the game or patch
@Splinter00S whenever i try to start the Ukraine Campaign; it says 'could not set video mode 1'. Any idea on how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance
Hmm, never had that problem before. I guess the first thing to try would be to let the game's intro videos play out and/or try to start a vietnam campaign to see if it's a problem with the campaign video that tries to play.

@@Duvstep910 I don't know that i can offer any advice beyond what I have already. The only thing I can think of is try some of the windows compatibility mode options like disabling scaling and high DPI stuff.

My problem with this game is that since I got my new videocard (Geforce GTX 1660 Super) the graphics are messed up. I am even barely able to exit the game to return to Windows (It was Win7 back then, now I use Win10). Any idea how to solve it?
Afraid not, only idea I've got is to do a full uninstall and do a clean reinstall
This game like many older ones does not work well with multicore cpus > fine/get Tackleberry's patch. There are command line edits that will fix too. Just google it.

You still can play this on modern computers with actual windows installed.
Creating a batch file will make it possible.
Open a texteditor like wordpad and copy the following lines:
rem First kill Explorer.exe, which messes up the colors
taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
rem Change to the application directory
F:\Fighters Anthology
(this will do, anyway where you installed the game, if not type the correct path)
rem run the application
FA.EXE
rem Wait for the emgame to quit, press Enter to continue
pause
Restart Explorer.exe
start explorer.exe
exit
Then name this file fa start.bat, copy it into your game directory and doubleclick it, good flying!
With a little modification of this file you also can start Microproses "European Air War" on actual Systems. All you have to do is to change the name and path to the eaw.exe file instead, and copy this file renamed as eaw start.bat into the eaw game directory. Doubleklick it and enjoy!
Actually with the 1.02f patch it's perfectly playable on modern systems out of the box!

You need a patch to correct swing wing aircrafts

Just get a nice old windows millenium or W98 laptop with 16 mb GPU and 600 MHz or more to run this, such as a Toshiba 6070 with Nv 420 Go GPU to run it butter smooth.
F-18 super Hornet, MSCS2, Wings over Vietnam al those superb Sims on the right hardware runs butter smooth😊.
Toshiba SP 6070 for example.
I think I bought all of these "Jane's fighters" series. Easy to control and even we can enjoy the reality of the modern air battle. Why they don't make remake version of these master piece??? Why????
The "simcade" market died in 2000s i think and nowadays you either get hyper realistic sim like DCS world or pure arcade like ace combat, but i wanna see another game like this too
EA might not even own the rights to the Jane's franchise anymore, there was that one-off Ace Combat style Jane's game (JASF), and nothing since. The studio behind the naval titles seemed to have spun off their own studio and retained the rights to those games since the current version of Fleet Command/Dangerous Waters you can get isn't published by EA. And on top of all that, the whole flight sim market kinda cratered for awhile and only started gaining popularity again when DCS started expanding. We're in a renaissance now though that DCS and MSFS2020 kicked off and we're already starting to see some Jane's style titles like Tiny Combat Arena entering the fold now that it's popular again. I think it's only a matter of time before we start getting some spiritual successors to the old Jetfighter and Jane's games.

So there's two .iso files included, and if you want to view the reference section you have to load the other .iso file
Partal solution i found(if the problem is game not seeing the disk, even if inserted) : 1. The iso for reference needs to be mounted as CD-ROM, not DVD, I used powerISO to mount it as such. (windows mounts as DVD)
2. It seems that the CDs were meant to be swapt when it displays the warning(even after you are done browsing the reference with disk 2, game promts you to insert disk one), so even when I mounted both disks to two different volumes, one cloudent be found by the game.
So have ONLY disk 2 mounted, start he game, and everything in disk 2 from refernce should work (eg. cockpits will crash the game) Then to play the game, swap the disk 2 iso for disk 1
Sad that you cant realy alt-tab to swap the disks when game asks you to, then it would be possible to do it as intended. MAYBE with the no disk patch and disk 2 mounted

You shouldn't need to use any compatibility setting, if you apply the patch it should work natively.
It should install to your hard drive once you run the setup file.
I still have the original copy of janes FA and miraculously my laptop can run it. The only annoying thing is all my flight stick hardware won't work with the game so keyboard controls only
That's a shame. The game is thankfully well designed so it's perfectly playable with the keyboard unlike most flight sims, but the joystick adds so much immersion!

How did you get the game to be full screen? Mine runs in a tiny area in the center of the screen?
Actually that's how I play my game, and I just scale it up to 4k (without changing the aspect ratio). If you want to run it in full screen, you have to set the display scaling on your card by going to your AMD or NVIDIA control panel, and then under the monitor or desktop options there should be an option for display scaling. I would recommend one that preserves the aspect ratio, but if you absolutely must fill the screen there should also be a full screen option. Once that's set, any full-screened game that is below your native resolution should scale up to fill most or all of your monitor depending on whether you chose full screen or aspect ratio scaling.
@@Splinter00S That was the secret! I had no scaling on. Now it's time to figure out how to get my rudder pedals (G29 racing pedals on a bodar to work) or just use my fighterstick and no rudder pedals.
@@happyloaf Glad I could help! I have a Thrustmaster HOTAS + Pedals setup, but the game only recognizes the joystick portion of the setup (that's fair, it's an old game and these are technically 3 separate devices), so I've taken to using the twist axis on my joystick as the rudder.
@@Splinter00S I don't have a twist axis but it recognizes my pedals as one axis but it's wonky and reads my clutch as left perfectly by the gas as right is random on if it accepts it. I might just try to play without rudder.
it wont work, when i started the game it appears a error saying to put the CD-ROM
CD1 still needs to be mounted when you play the game. If you try to view the Reference section of the game, you'll need to mount CD2 and the main portion of the game will be unplayable until you remount CD1.

The game references the install drive letter for the CD path I do believe. When you run the game, is the disc mounted in the *original* drive letter that it was mounted in when installed?

That's actually what I grew up with for a significant portion of my childhood, US Navy Fighters '97 until an uncle got me my copy of Fighters Anthology

That'd be interesting to see, I think without remapping it using third-party software the game would probably read one joystick as an actual joystick and the other joystick as a throttle which would be... interesting... to work with lol

Yes! Just make sure to install the patch!

Tried the .exe trys to patch and crashes.
Wish I could help, but I've never had any problems myself. Only thing I could really recommend is to try running them with compatibility mode.

Oh, so for that you just need to load up the second iso file into your virtual drive, that one contains the reference disc, that's the FA_2_00F.iso file.
