My folks' ZV427MG9A would play a tape for a few secs, and then stop. Found this, cleaned the IR emitter, prism, and receivers (including the one under the make/break wheel) and that did it! Giving it a good inside-out cleaning now. You're a wizard!

5:28 solved my problem. I picked up a Magnavox ZV427MG9A from a thrift store and the DVD worked fine but the VHS tape would load and the unit would turn off. Cleaning the prism and side sensors solved the problem instantly. The greatest feature for this combo is that the HDMI out works for both VHS and DVD. The sound is great but it shows how bad the video quality of VHS was. Thank you for the video.

You are a God send. I've seen so many forums asking about this problem without a solution. This totally worked and my kids are very happy 😀

11-21-2022 Thanks to you and your excellent videos I was able to fix the leaking caps on the power board AND the VCR 15 second shutdown. Save my gear from the dump.

This fixed mine as well, hard to believe this fixed ours after years of only the DVD drive only working after the tape player would die after 6 seconds. Didn't realize VHS players used a laser emitter too inside.

Same situation with my same model combo player.
Never thought I would find a video of this model for repair diagnosis.
I was ready to toss it.

Thank you for making this video. I have one of these players that just decided it didn't want to play VHS anymore. I took it apart and cleaned all the emitters and sensors. It works now. To me it seems silly that it has these IR emitters and sensors, just seems like something needlessly built to be serviced.

I like the use of the Picture in Picture. Another great video. Have you mentioned what your day job is? Is it electronic related?

Have you ever had a situation where you clean all the sensors and it still shuts off after 10 seconds or so? I confirmed the emitter is working. Could the receiver under the rotating gear be bad?

Have you ever seen a situation where the VCR plays through the composite output but not the HDMI? DVD plays through the HDMI with no problem. Thinking it was something on the HDMI board I swapped it with a known working one. Same issue so must me something on the main board? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Most VCR/DVD Players do not have scalers built into them to play VHS over HDMI. This Magnavox does and to me it's special because of that.
