This is a huge improvement over the previous A class. I like that Mercedes have made a variant to rival the likes of the S3, 135i,Type R etc. More choice to the consumer not everyone has the means or what's an A45 as a daily driver! 300bhp is enough for most people on public roads.

There's a difference between bhp and hp, the bhp of the new A45 is rumoured 400 and the new Golf R is rumoured to have 400 also... We shall see when they come out..

@@TheBlackBeetle only A180 and 200 have torsion Beam and then only the models with less than 17 inch wheels. Those engines and the 180d share the hull motor with Renault.

I’d take this over the S3 but I’d not go for the A45 over the RS3! I think this is the car to get: quick enough, it has tech, good sound, great styling.. shame there’s no Shooting Break anymore
Love the main body& interior. Always think the wing styling cheapens it a bit though. Nice review.
I think it's a nice car that can easily be tuned to match the old A45s performance. I just hope they go bananas with the A45, maybe an hybrid S version? Panamericana Grill, big spoiler, wider stance etc. will be good enough already though. can't wait for it.

Personally would be good to see a more understated A Class like the M140i - however you can probably spec it to be more understated. Just looks like it’s trying a bit to hard for a car with 300 bhp compared to the rivals

HeadPack they aren't diluting it. They are expanding the line up. Huge difference. Not everyone wants a full on amg. They are fine with a the regular model but want some sporty touch ups of an amg. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Eventus Vantos there really isn’t a “huge difference” in this case to be honest. In the process of AMG “expanding” their brand, there is no denying they are Diluting the brand in the process. Let me put it this way, if Ferrari wanted to make small hatchbacks to cater for those who don’t want “full on” Ferrari’s, they are most definitely going to not be as prestigious as competing brands like McLaren. Same logic applies to AMG. In fact, this is the exact reason why Audi created their S models to bridge the gap between standard and RS models and BMW don’t market the M140 as a full on M car.

Wheels look lost, bonnet line is weird, as are the headlights, spoiler has been mentioned by others too. S3 with an uprated front arb and minor changes to wheel geometry to kill factory set understeer for me I think.

Tom absolutely not. It doesn't dilite the brand. It expands and diversifies it. It doesn't degrade the brand at all. An amg is a sporty mercedes performance vehicle and the a35 and a45 very much fit that category.

Obviously the M140i doesn't dilute the M badge, it got a beautiful, massive in-line 6 engine.
Quattro GmbH doesn't exist so it can't be diluted.
For me (and many others), AMG, M and Audi Sport GmbH should be about creating the craziest monster they are capable of given a certain car model. No compromise. The Audi S models should therefore simply be regular Audi cars and the RS badge should only be put on the high-end models, same with AMG and M.
Until 10 years ago, it was exactly like that and it actually meant something to have the AMG, M or RS badge on your car. Today, these badges are abused for indicating a 5k interior package in your 4-cylinder diesel car.
BMW's m140i is not an all out M sport car, it's just sprinkled with lil tweaks so they np

Its not a marketing buzz word. They don't just stick an amg badge on it and call it a day. It gets modified to be more sporty both design wise and performance wise... To produce a completly different beast of a car.

The fact they make many kinds of sporty vehicles is what they are known for and praised for. It IS/DEFINES the brand. So by definition it can't dilute it.

Everything is ok minus that atrocious tablet displays, u couldn't just have a regular digital instrument display, they just glued 2 ipads together
I don't mind it as much it's still controllable with a dial rather than a touchscreen. Still, having two iPads glued together looks better than the lonesome one they previously had that stuck out like a sore thumb. Though that's just me.
Maurice its not two ipads glued together. They are two gorgeous monitors with beatifresolution. You won't find any tablet like that. Plus this is more at eye level and much better for the driver.

It looks exactly the like A Class AMG Line apart from the wing and the exhausts. Could've jazzed up the styling abit if you're paying the premium for the hot version.
Golf R only comes with 5 door and DSG now, Matt! And 300 horses. But unlike the A35 the Golf/Audi are reaching the end of their product cycles so they will punch a little higher again than the A35, hopefully.

Pechurka 131 if you mistaken the rear for a KIA you are blind and should see a doctor ASAP. Audi and vw stick with the same lame design. Mercedes changes and it looks way betrer than a KIA ever could. Also KIA are the ones that try to copy the Germans design since they have ex German designers in their companies.

Drumz -_- no It doesn't. KIA cerato tail lights are big and round. A class tail lights are small and pointy and are leds. Night and day difference. A class looks way better.

I don't understand why people love the interior of this car so much. It looks like its missing a proper dashboard and a giant IPAD put in its place. I've tried to like it but i don't. Much prefer the Golf or Audi. Also prefer the new Civic Type R compared this, which a lot of people like to moan about it being ugly.

A class interior easily has the beat looking interior in this class and even far betrer looking than cars in higher classes that are much more expensive. Its a goegous modern elegant sporty and futuristic interior.
Its not missing a dashboard. Its that the dashboard is lower giving you a much betrer viewing angle of the road ahead.
And its not an iPad. Its dual gorgeous screens with amazing resolution and look nothing like an iPad. And its placed right in line with the drivers eye level for the optomial viewing angle.
So the interior is beautiful in both form. And function.

I usually hate the exterior styling of Mercedes-Benz, but I have to say that this car is absolutely beautiful. I prefer this car over the others, hands down, no question. Too bad I'm an American, so I doubt I'll ever be able to drive this gorgeous machine. It's truly a rolling piece of art! Europeans make cars so much better than my kin. I'm envious of European gear heads. Damn, I wish I was born I'm Europe. Hahah. My dream is to eventually move to Europe. Perhaps then I'll get to finally drive real cars.

Adam Pap not at all. Its easily the best looking interior in its class even betrer looking than cars that cost way more in different classes. Those screens are elegant and very futuristic and modern. And it is partly like a video game in the sense that it has useful augmented reality features.

So Mercedes looked at the Civic Type R and was like "wow, we really like that boy-racer look with that large wing, skirts and over-the-top fenders. Let's make the A35 look just like it!"
I love the sleeper/discreet look of VW, Audi and BMW equivalents; that's not what you typically get with hot hatches. But well, if you're 13 you'll definitely want your mom to drive this, an i30 N or a Type R.
The i30n is not that bad dude. It's only noticeable in the blue. If u get it in red/grey/black it is much more understated like the rest of the sleepers

I'm usually not a fan of Mercedes design, but this new (and previous) A class really speaks to me... the VW and Audi are really boring to look at. Also the A class has come a long way if you'd look at where they started with... first generation was an abomination.
Agree with everything said here. I'm a Audi fan in this life and the next but this makes the S3 and even slightly the golf R look outdated. I love Audi's understated look but they need to bring the S3 back in-line slightly (Styling wise)

mark reed get outta here with your analog shit. This interior is easily the best in its class and even looks better than many cars way more expensive than it in higher classes. The screens aren't just dumped on. They are right in line with the drivers eye level displaying the information in a much better angle. It won't lool outdated. Its modern and futuristic and ahead if its time. And digital dials are WAYYYYYYYYYYYY superior to analog ones. Its not even a contest. Analaogs eat up so much space.. Meanwhile digital takes advantage of every mm of space and allows you time display aby kind of information you would want in the way and style you want. Not to mention you can also extract a lot more functionality out of it like combining map and speeds in the same screen and its also far more customizable and personalizatiom friendly and gives you far more freedom than an analog ever could.

S3 looks so much better. I reallly don't like Mercedes' new design language. New A-Class, CLS and GLE look so dreary. I saw the new CLS on the motorway a month ago, and the back looks just so disgusting. But, I can't fault the interior. Mercedes is still the king of interiors, well, in terms of looks. This new A35 AMG maybe looks a bit better with silly wings and skirts and a yellow paint, but it still looks like a ugly Hyundai. M140i and Golf Clubsport GTI are still my favorite hot-hatches. Shame next M140i will have a 2 liter engine and FWD... :(

My view is that C, E and S look alright. The rear of the new A looks like Hyundai, and with the SUVs they basically lost their language and style. The worst offender is of course that electric SUV, which looks outright ugly.
Marcel Lukačić get your eyes checked ASAP. It looks absolutely nothing like a hyundai or any of that. This looks way more sporty and athletic. And cls in 53 form looks great. So does the new facelift s63 and new gt63 (the cls 63). So on their contrary their new design language is amazing.
Ordered mine today will put a video up when it arrives in march. A45 wont be out till late 2019 early 2020

Josh Bacon always happens with optional upgrades. Self driving version of the A class and massage back seats never came to the UK if I’m not mistaken

I can not make a choice on which of these 4 contenders looks the best (And I am usually a BWM fan). The AMG is the loudest but I´m not sure that fits an MB all too well. The R is simply too understated, the A3 is proportional properly the best - but it is also a very conservative after all and the 135 like this does also not really impress - And I am only talking looks here. Had it included an M2 I would not be in doubt, but that is not entirely this segmentation. So yea undecided for looks here.

CarWow you are mis-informed. Volkswagen no longer make 3 door Golf R’s and have phased out the manual. So they are not optional extras they are also standard now on the Golf R.
The comnon question is: how would you spend money you'll save by buying an i30n performance? Hookers?
All these cars have essentially FWD with the exception of the BMW... so you can spare the extra money for S/RS/AMG badge and just buy a regular model. It will remain mysterious to me how someone can buy a car like this? There is NOTHING sporty about it. A lot of horsepower alone does not make a car more sporty.
You'd only buy one if you can't afford the A45, same with the C43 / C63 - The new A45 should be epic, although over GBP50k I'd expect
Having 5 doors isn't a bonus. Only having 5 doors available is the reason why many won't buy it.
