- This video contains the necessary steps and information on accessing full video control on the more domestic versions of Nikon DSLR cameras such as the D3100 and D5100. It probably works on all but I've only tested it on these models. Please let me know if it works on other model numbers.
It sounds quite long winded to perform these steps, but it's not. It's actually quite a quick process and obviously, you'd want to perform these steps when shooting in different lighting environments. It takes around 10-15 seconds of button pressing to get what you want out of the camera when you have done it a few times and this level of control allows you to shoot perfectly exposed video with a great amount of latitude that you can utilise in the grade to gain a "look" for your film. ;)
Any questions, please ask!
It is the first time for me to comment on CZcams all over past years, but honestly " You are awesome".
I tried it and it`s amazing
wow this video, literally saved me from falling into a cliff, thank you so much, will never forget this
Wow, I am going to buy this DSLR right now! So powerful and easy to use. Congrats to Nikon!
I'm kidding.
I was wondering how to lower the contrast for the longest... Can't believe i missed this! Thanks for the video!!!
Great tutorial! Was so tired of the manual exposure on my girlfriend's nikon d5100 so this will help me out alot.
WOW I'm blown away, I've had my D3100 for years, but now after these settings I'm in love with it all over again! Thank you for a very informative video.
Thank you so much! I have a wedding to film and couldnt figure out how to manually control.
Thank you so much! Very good and detailed explanation on how to use my camera for better videos!
Wow, easily the best tutorial on this. Great job and thank you!
thank you SO MUCH, you cant imagine how much you helped me with this video!!!
Great tutorial, i really needed this instructions. thumbs up for you!
Thank you! Very informative!!! I did not know this about my camera.
I FREAKING LOVE YOU DUDE 😭😭
how you ever figured this out is baffling to me, but good on ya, I'll give this a try
I love you. I didn't know I can do it with my camera!!
Thanks for this!!! I was getting so frustrated with "M(anual)" mode in video. This helped a lot! Thanks!
you did a great job with this video. Definitely helped!
I love you! I've been looking for this a long time ago
the music is great!
Life saver! thanks man :D
I'm a amateur photographer wanting to get into video, I have a Nikon D5100 and as a guy who loves to feel the joy of only using manual mode and bragging to my friends I feel utterly offended that Nikon though users wouldn't like to set there ISO and exposure manually
I'm learning& subscribed& HIT THE BELL great video I have two D5100'S
Awesome tutorial. I always kept wondering why my videos looked over processed and sharpened out of the camera. Turn out to be picture control that you explained above. However I would ask you do you recommend shooting completely without saturation/contrast in order to get "the most RAW" out of camera for further processing?
Thanks again
thanks bro for tutorial very nice
Hello! Thanks for this. Can you give tips on the settings for white and black background? Thanks!
When I move the spot meter the ISO just stays at 1600
Thanks, it helped.
I have a query. I followed your instruction to set aperture and shutter speed in the priority modes. In both modes the overall exposure is proper, the settings are same (1/50 shutter and F3.5, ISO 100). But with the same settings, when I switch to Manual mode, the picture becomes dark. Why ?
+Advait Thakur because manual mode doesnt let the camera change anything its up to you to change everything :D
+OswalHD I found out that it was the aperture of the 18-55 kit lens which was so small that it didn't allow sufficient light. I attached a prime lens which improved the exposure.
Hello guy, thank's for this tuto, i got a problem, i really hope you can help me....
All is working for me, as in your video. BUT i can set the shutter speed to 1/2 or 1/250 the result is exactly same.
I try to do quick panning, or i even rec flowing water, the result is same.
BUT, the SHUTTER SPEED work with pix....
Since i record my video to 30 fps i would really like to have my shutter to 1/60 ... I really feel like my video get choppy because of that...
if you want full control over ISO and shutter speed in live view then you have to have custom firmware
0on the shooting menu, my ISO setting is greyed out.
What do you use for audio??? That sounds fantastic!
Thanks! Really helped! On the D3100 in ISO sensitivity settings I cannot select 1/50 as the min shutter speed, only 1/30 or 1/60. Any ideas?
Going into Shutter Priority mode after locking AE seems to do this though it is hard to tell as I think to actually change setting you need to go out of and back into live mode
Thanks a lot for this.
Thank you thank you thank you.
please gude me
i have nikon d3100 and nikon nikkor 35 135mm lens when i put the lens on my camera it will show me this issue
lock aperture ring at minimum aperture
love the music :3
Didn't work for me :( when I hold the shutter things look fine in live mode, but then go back to normal once I let go :(
thx so much this vid helps a ton
i didn't really get the part from 2:18 .. like how do i adjust aperture to desired level??
Hi thank you for the tips. Now I have a doubt. Focus, must be manual or auto?
thank you.
How do i get to the custom setting menu?
Hello everyone :) I have problem with my nikon d3100
the aperture and shutter isn`t effected to movie (not only during record)
I got my aperture to F22 but the movie was just lighten and with glow.
you know i got the same issue i think 3100 isnt capable of taking a manual video setting
This was great.
I need to know. is this applicable when you use your cam on Manual (Letter M oh the wheel)?
+Cycling Manchester
Are you sure that this also applies to the D3100? Is that an assumption or have you actually tested this with the 3100? I only ask because you are using the D5100 in the vid, and from everyone I've talked to, it is simply not possible to be able to adjust any exposure or shutter speed settings when shooting video with the D3100.
John Thompson everything in this video is now superseded by simply hacking the firmware. It’s a simple processing unleashes all kinds of useful options. Thanks
I was not aware of this! Well, I knew there were hacks that could extend the shooting time, but didn't know of this kind of thing. Could you direct me to the best place to find this firmware? Thank you!
Thank You !
Thank you so much!!
Perfect!! Muito obrigado.
cool man, really help me out
how is this camera for long video recording? have you tried shooting with the bitrate hack? does it overheat?
is everything manual
shuld i wory about an autinatic change in my video?
Thx a lot! 1 Question:
Why not just go to manual mode (M) and set all the setting (Aperture/Exposure/ISO) required and then lock (AE-L)?
I believe its because when you use manual mode the D5100 model doesnt allow for you to set the aperture. In other words when filming on manual mode the camera will be constantly adjusting to the light. That's why you have to set it to (A)aperture.
Richard Vaz Manual mode means FULL MANUAL, you make all the setting. The camera won't change anything for you while recording.
Jean Darm Show Not when you record video.
How can you change the time for video? To unlimmeted?
is there anyway that we could download your grading preset?
A small problem in my cam there ain’t 1/50s🥺 what should i do
That's probably because you are in a 30 frame master setting.
The music is nice, btw thanks bro helped me out
Does anyone know what I should do with my white balance settings?
You should make it so that any white surface you see in the real world is the same as you see in your camera! :)
anyone know the name of the song?
How did you get 20 minutes video recording time to stop?
Please correct me if I'm wrong, picture color management is the same option for both stills and video.. right?
Hi Alberto. Colour management differs in the sense that stills shot in a certain profile never have that profile actually baked into the image as the file is RAW format. It may differ if you shoot JPEG only. In terms of video, yes. That colour profile is applied. I hope that helps
Yes I do shoot in raw, so the color profile doesn't change anything. I was just wondering if, to change video settings, I have to modify the same option I (would) change for jpg
thanks!
Is it possible to show RAW on Nikon?
Sony Name plis + great video thanx !
+LaRRy L33T and lest clearer colors ?? and the shadows were like how to set ?? great guide!
can you do the same tutorial, but for filming at night. I'm getting alotta noise in dark areas @ 1/50 F. 2 iso1600
on D7100 . what am I doing wrong?
try getting that iso down lower
lower the iso
just love you
Nikon D3100 - it doesn't work in shadows, looks so grainy and it's horrible. I need heeeeeelp please 😢😢
is it possible to shoot on cinestyle plugin on a Nikon d3200 on manual mode for videos
Go to Your d3200 picture controls. Cinestyle is just sharpness: "0", contrast: -4, Saturation: "0" and Color Tone: "0" rename as "Cinestyle"
Classic woooooooooooooooooow
Suggest me some good color grading programs for post production

filmconvert is worth the investment if you want yours to look truly professional.
it records only till 10 min cant i increase it ?
Hi, I did the same as you did here on my d3100, but I can still notice very bad noise at ISO 100, and I'm quite sure the AE is locked. I've tried with different lenses, different apertures and different lights but the problem still remains. Any advice? (I've even tried to clean the sensor but nothing changed)
Is there a way to change the shutter speed in the d3100 I cant find it
hi any one who knows to dis able the recording time in d3100? thnks
You can't bud, sorry. Dslr cameras have a max recording time of 29:59mins. Anything over that you need firmware. (Magic lantern, ect.)
There is a hacked firmware for the d3100.........just installed it. Unfortunately 17:59 is all we can get out of the d3100 so far. But the bitrate has been bumped to 30-39-54 (your choice on installation)
Not Good At Lying how do you get it because all I can record is 10 min and I would like to do more than just that at a time
I am not allowed to set picture control
KevinIsOdd Open your lens..
James Adams ye... the lens cap is off
No try turn out the lens
Ahh, I see. This allows one to set the aperture manually and allows the camera to automatically choose the correct ISO. Desired shutter speed is achieved by setting the Auto ISO minimum shutter speed.
😃
For those situations where you do not want the exposure to change at all, (studio situation etc), there is also a way to go full manual by using manipulated firmware. You can see the result here:
www.slrlounge.com/nikonhacker-unlocks-full-manual-video-recording-d5100/
and how to achieve that here:

(There's a better video out there but you get the gist.)
по руски бы еще, то вообще вам бы цены не было
Download the Flaat_10 profile, google it up, much better than neutral flat that i have been using so long.

Thank you 😊
How do you change FPS?
