Manual video control on Nikon D3100, D5100 DSLR, Flat picture profile settings and Grading

  • This video contains the necessary steps and information on accessing full video control on the more domestic versions of Nikon DSLR cameras such as the D3100 and D5100. It probably works on all but I've only tested it on these models. Please let me know if it works on other model numbers.
    It sounds quite long winded to perform these steps, but it's not. It's actually quite a quick process and obviously, you'd want to perform these steps when shooting in different lighting environments. It takes around 10-15 seconds of button pressing to get what you want out of the camera when you have done it a few times and this level of control allows you to shoot perfectly exposed video with a great amount of latitude that you can utilise in the grade to gain a "look" for your film. ;)
    Any questions, please ask!

    Awesome tutorial. I always kept wondering why my videos looked over processed and sharpened out of the camera. Turn out to be picture control that you explained above. However I would ask you do you recommend shooting completely without saturation/contrast in order to get "the most RAW" out of camera for further processing?

    I have a query. I followed your instruction to set aperture and shutter speed in the priority modes. In both modes the overall exposure is proper, the settings are same (1/50 shutter and F3.5, ISO 100). But with the same settings, when I switch to Manual mode, the picture becomes dark. Why ?

    • @OswaHD
      @OswaHD Před 8 lety +1

    • @AdvaitThakur
      @AdvaitThakur Před 8 lety +1

      +OswalHD I found out that it was the aperture of the 18-55 kit lens which was so small that it didn't allow sufficient light. I attached a prime lens which improved the exposure.

    Hello guy, thank's for this tuto, i got a problem, i really hope you can help me....
    All is working for me, as in your video. BUT i can set the shutter speed to 1/2 or 1/250 the result is exactly same.
    I try to do quick panning, or i even rec flowing water, the result is same.
    BUT, the SHUTTER SPEED work with pix....
    Since i record my video to 30 fps i would really like to have my shutter to 1/60 ... I really feel like my video get choppy because of that...

    Are you sure that this also applies to the D3100? Is that an assumption or have you actually tested this with the 3100? I only ask because you are using the D5100 in the vid, and from everyone I've talked to, it is simply not possible to be able to adjust any exposure or shutter speed settings when shooting video with the D3100.

    • @ObscurityTV
      @ObscurityTV Před 10 lety

      I believe its because when you use manual mode the D5100 model doesnt allow for you to set the aperture. In other words when filming on manual mode the camera will be constantly adjusting to the light. That's why you have to set it to (A)aperture.

    • @Craigo5000
      @Craigo5000  Před 9 lety

      Hi Alberto. Colour management differs in the sense that stills shot in a certain profile never have that profile actually baked into the image as the file is RAW format. It may differ if you shoot JPEG only. In terms of video, yes. That colour profile is applied. I hope that helps

    • @alberto.zanardo
      @alberto.zanardo Před 9 lety +1

      Yes I do shoot in raw, so the color profile doesn't change anything. I was just wondering if, to change video settings, I have to modify the same option I (would) change for jpg

    Ahh, I see. This allows one to set the aperture manually and allows the camera to automatically choose the correct ISO. Desired shutter speed is achieved by setting the Auto ISO minimum shutter speed.
    😃
    For those situations where you do not want the exposure to change at all, (studio situation etc), there is also a way to go full manual by using manipulated firmware. You can see the result here:
    www.slrlounge.com/nikonhacker-unlocks-full-manual-video-recording-d5100/
    and how to achieve that here:
