That first scene with all the tarantulas is the reason Doc Ock fights Spider-Man.

The music, the cinematography, the editing, the stunts, the colorful characters, the atmosphere, the touches of eerie horror sprinkled throughout... they all culminate in one of the finest action adventure films ever produced.

Fun fact: The guy who played Gimli in Lord of the Rings played Indy's arab sidekick in this film. Also: the Ark was said to contain the two tablets that the Ten Commandments were written on, the Manna that fell from heaven for the Hebrews in the desert, and the Staff of Aaron (Moses' brother and the first Jewish High Priest). No one was allowed to even touch the Ark or else they would die.
Not to mention that the handling of the Ark was very carefully listed. You had to wear special shoes, and only carry it with wooden carrying poles. When some scientists made a replica of the Ark, they found that the materials it was made of caused it to generate an electrical current by a galvanic reaction, so someone COULD have actually electrocuted themselves by touching it when not insulated.

Fun fact, Alyska, the first Indiana Jones film is responsible for getting more people in the real world interested in the field of Archaeology than any other movie.
Another fun fact, I've seen many real archaeologists react to these movies, and their reviews of it are always pure gold to watch. One thing they nearly always universally say about these films is that, if booby traps like we see in the films actually existed, archaeologists would be more interested in studying the TRAPS than they would be in studying the treasures!

I became interested in archaeology as a child from seeing the "Mummy" movies, starring Boris Karloff, made during the 1930s.

There was a deleted scene with the Arab Priest when they were reading the staff of Rah headpiece, warning about the dangers of looking at the divine upon disturbing the Ark.
Regarding the Stunts, Spielberg asked the Stuntmen, "Are there any stunts you've always dreamed of doing but never found the right film for?" Taking this opportunity, the stunt team compiled a list of their "dream stunts," which Spielberg and his team then wove into one almighty scene for the Truck Chase.
Its the obvious comment to sneer and say bah, Tomb Raider was just 'heavily inspired' by Indiana Jones. However IJ was itself a massive homage to older black and white film serials, especially King Solomons Mines. Lucas was big on that, and Flash Gordon as a kid. So he turned the latter into Star Wars and the former into Indiana Jones.

Fun fact: The scene where Indy shot the swordsman wasn't actually scripted. It was put in day of filming. Harrison Ford had food poisoning and was really sick. He asked the director if he could just shoot the guy, thinking it would be what Indy would do anyway.
Fun fact... the cargo steamer ship that Indy and Marion rode in, was the one that made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs.
PS - The swordsman scene was a classic subversion of expectations. A close runner-up to that scene was the one with the coat hanger. Everyone was waiting for some kind of crazy martial arts scene with that 'weapon'.
This is true, but leaves out the, "why." Harrison Ford had contracted dysentery, and was dehydrated and miserable from shitting his guts out (no, seriously.) He simply couldn't handle the action scene as scripted, and they were looking for a way to get around that. That's when he said, "Why don't I just shoot him?"
@@rawkmode6315Everyone on set I think had caught dysentary from the local food at where they were shooting. The only person who didn't get sick was Spielberg himself because he brought his own canned food, lucky him lol.

All three are great, but The Last Crusades is also my personal favorite too. Temple of Doom is good too, people bash it way too much.

Indiana jones is 10 years older than Marion. Back then he and Marion got together in 1926 even though he was 27 and she was 17. Abner, Marion’s Father, was Indiana mentor and when he found out, he strained his relationship with him. Over the next 10 years she realized what she did was wrong and here Indiana jones brushes it off
In the original draft Indy was supposed to have been 25, which would make more sense with him as a graduate student, and Marion 15 but they figured that was waaaay too creepy so they upped the ages to 17 and 27 still way bad but not as rapey as 15/25.
Not only that, but Harrison Ford is 10 years older than Karen Allen. He was 38 and she was 28 when they made Raiders.
*Irrelevant, 10-12 years old was the age of consent in prior eras and rape was defined as forceful intercourse without consent.* Short life expectancy determined such things.

So, unless Jones went down to Georgia with her, it *was* wrong (and he almost certainly knew it).
I love how the poison darts don't freak you out; the deadly spears, the humongous boulder - none of that freaks you out...but the moment he runs through🕷spiderwebs 🕸-- you cringe and squeak. 😂😂😂
The legendary John Williams just earned his 54th Oscar nomination for the 5th and final installment of the franchise (INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY (2023)) literally a couple of weeks ago, making him the oldest ever nominee in any category. Today (Feb 8) also happens to be his 92nd birthday. What a way to celebrate his birthday!

One of the best films of the early 1980s. Steven Spielberg is a master storyteller and director. In 1982, Raiders , Reds both lost to Chariots of Fire for best picture

In a deleted scene the old man the read the markings on the medalion told Indiana Jones not to look if the ark was opened, that was how he knew to keep his eyes shut and told Marion to keep hers shut
Harrison Fords best work ever. With the mind of George Lucas, directing of Steven Spielberg, and the music of John Williams (happy 92nd birthday to him) this franchise is one of the best in history. You need to react to ALL of them. PLEASE.🙏.

There was supposed to be a fight between Indy and the swordsman, there’s actually a bit of footage filmed for it i think, but Harrison Ford felt horrible from food poisoning. So he suggested he just shoot the guy
Almost all the cast and crew had food poisoning except Spielberg who brought his own canned food from home because he is a picky eater.

As far as I am aware Spielberg never shot in Tunisia prior to Raiders since it was a location Lucas chose since he was familiar with the area because of Star Wars. Which is weird that Ford would fall victim since he had shot there for Star Wars as well.

you can't imagine how much this impacted us 12-year-old boys watching it in theatre when it first came out. My god. The storyline - powerful relics in strange lands, puzzles from ancient times to solve in furtherance of a quest, one good guy fighting a cabal of evil henchmen, the everyman vs the state, all that was nirvana enough for a kid, but those weren't the only things. Raiders of the Lost Ark was the first modern incarnation of this type of storyline. And everything was new, the fight scenes were kinetic and had a sense of place. The music - mindbending. It was just cut different from every other film of the time, and to top it off, the audience really got into it. There were actual cheers from the audience at the end and people would see it over and over again. For me personally, it inspired a love of both history and archaeology, with me learning all that I could possibly learn about the 1930s and 1940s - especially World War II and the efforts of the Allies vs the Axis.
It's sad that we don't have the same mystery nowadays - this movie inspired countless others and as a result, they have lost lots of their awe. And yes the mummy is 'highly inspired' by this, but it doesn't hit the same for me. I like the historicity of this more and the fact that there were such groups as Nazis and that they did almost destroy modern civilization just makes things hit harder - even watching this film 40 years later.
It's implied Indy and Marion had an inappropriate relationship while she was still underage and "in love", or at least infatuated, with him. And Lucas's original treatment/concept had them at like 15 and 25. I think they nudged it to 16 for her or something, but still really young, and the implications based on their ages in 1936 and that they last saw each other 10 years before, are that she was young regardless.

We were at a movie theater and the previews were on and people started cheering and applauding. We were surprised we had never heard of this for a trailer. No one had seen the movie yet. The movie was Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Nice reaction Alyska, so glad you watched this popular gem. The sequel, The Temple Of Doom and its third The Last Crusade should be reacted to. This is one of Harrison's best films. Reminds me so much of Tomb Raider is getting artifacts, not for personal gain, but for a museum to be cherished. Your next film reaction should be Arachnophobia (1990) LOL.
Based on her reaction to the spiders in this movie, Arachnophobia would absolutely break her. I love spiders and that movie gives me the heebie jeebies.

33:14 Fun Fact: This statue fell a little earlier than it was supposed to, but after watching the dailies, Spielberg said he was still satisfied with the way it fell and how Harrison Ford didn't look quite ready...it appeared more realistic.

Another connection: the canyon where Indiana threatens to blow up the Ark with the RPG is the same canyon where the jawas ambushed R2-D2 in "Star Wars: A New Hope."
This film was meant as an homage to the old 1930's matinee serials they used to show in theaters before the main attraction. As good as this film truly is, it's still meant as a tribute to that old version of Hollywood that is long gone. Even when this came out, it was long gone.
Don't get discouraged or dissuaded by people's opinion of Crystal Skull, it's pretty good. Lots of good shots and stunts.

Harrison Ford did a great many of his own stunts. In fact, at 81 years of age, he is the oldest actor to still do stunts in his action career.

I don’t know if you’ve seen Lord of the Rings yet, but if you have, you should recognize that the dwarf in Lord of the Rings (Gimli) is played by the same actor (John Rhys-Davies) who plays the local who is helping Indiana as the character Sallah.
Nothing beats the first 3 Indiana Jones movies. The TV show wasn't too bad either.
@48:43 Indy knows to keep your eyes shut because he knows his history. No one but a few rabbi in the Temple were allowed to look upon the Ark or its content. If you failed to humble yourself before it, you died.
Fun fact: when the Ark was resting in Solomons temple, the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies once a year to offer sacrifice. Before he entered, a rope would be tied to his foot in the event a part of the ritual was not done properly and he was struck dead. No one could enter to remove the body because only the high priest could enter; anyone else would be struck dead. I have no idea if it ever happened but it shows how seriously Judaism was taken before Christ came and made the temple worship unnecessary.

This film actually came about from Steven Spielberg wanting to make a Bond film.
Yup. He couldn't get the film rights to make it, so he partnered up with George Lucas who suggested adapting his Bond idea into being more like the adventure serials the two had grown up watching. In turn this series served to be a major inspiration for the likes of the Tomb Raider and Uncharted game series, making Bond a sort of spiritual father of Indiana Jones and grandfather of Lara Croft and Nathan Drake. Also, you know, the character who shows up in the third film...

Actually, Lucas had the idea that would become Raiders in 1973 (years before he spoke to Spielberg about it). Lucas pitched him about the Raiders film rather than Spielberg's desire to direct a Bond film. They toyed with several iterations/influences of the main character, including changing the name from Smith to Jones. Jones is nothing like Bond - they wanted a more fun and audience relatable character. Jones is funny and full of faults. They dropped the Bondesque traits (alcohol and womanizing - I am a big Bond movie fan). Lucas was inspired by the serials of the 30's. You can see the differences in the films.

There is an hour long tv special that came out shortly after the movie that is a behind the scenes/making of feature. It shows how they filmed the stunts along with the practical special effects, it’s about an hour long and on CZcams.
My favourites adventures movies ever, this awesome saga. A great character also it´s Sallah (John Rhys Davies), who also played the dwarf Gimli in LOTR trilogy.

Indy knows to keep the eyes closed mostly because it is part of the Ark lore from the Bible, but it is never established in the movie beyond a deleted scene, so those non-Bible savvy of us get confused 😅

The 2nd movie, Temple of Doom, is loved by some, not by others, but everyone agrees that the 3rd film, The Last Crusade, is a classic. The most fun of all the Indy films.

One of my favorite franchises. 3rd movie is arguably the best. I would love to see you react to them all.
When that man and Jones was in that stand-off and the guy starts swinging his sword around showing his skills and Indy shoots him, that was ad libbed. It was in the script that the two got into a sword fight. But HF said "Indiana Jones wouldn't fight him, he'd just shoot him". So he did it that way and it's an iconic scene.
Han Solo, Doctor Octopus, and Gimli make a masterpiece!

He reason he knows to shut his eyes is because he read the old testament, in the beginning of the movie he makes a remark, “didn’t you go to Sunday school?”
He shut his eyes because the guy who interpreted the medallion warned him not to witness the rath of god. They cut the scene (and the scene where Belloq prepares for the ceremony). One of the missteps in the film.

Indy knew to keep his eyes shut because the ancient Israelites believed that the Ark carried God and God's perfection would be so overwhelming that anything imperfect would perish so one should not look if it was open.
You want to really cringe? Canonically, Marion was *fifteen* years old when Indiana had a fling with her when he was 27. When she said "I was a child! It was wrong and you knew it!", there's no exaggerating...
That age ranges from 15-17 depending on who you listen to. Unfortunately a 16 or 17 year old girl with a man 10 years her senior wasn't uncommon in the time period this is set in.
The age differences even further back were way worse but we're looking at this from a time when most modern societies decided that it was wrong a long time ago so it looks *really* bad to us.
Raiders Of The Lost Ark was inspired from a 1954 movie Secret Of The Incas, with Charlton Heston. Indiana Jones' outfit looks VERY similar to what Charlton Heston was wearing, and a lot of ideas were lifted out of Secret Of The Incas that went into Raiders Of The Lost Ark. At the beginning of Raiders, in that jungle temple, there was a large gold disk in the background. That was the disk that was being sought in Secret Of The Incas.
When they were lifting that stone slab at the top of the temple in Raiders, there was some kind of dark smoky substance coming out. That was most likely 3,000 year old bacteria and viruses, which was what killed most of the team opening King Tut's tomb. They rushed in and breathed the bacteria.
Fun fact: Spielberg, Lucas and Kasdan (Larry Kasdan the writer for Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back) got together and wrote the entire screenplay and flow of the film in three days. You can find their notation and brainstorm sessions online. Simply genius.

The sand in the Ark represents what's left of what they were exoecting to find - the tablets on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. The Ark was used to dispense God's wrath.
Daddy Indiana Jones is EVERYTHING that Tomb Raider was based on!!
In the bible, it was said not to look at the Ark or to even touch it. That's how Indy knew not to look at it, no matter what.
Ya know Indiana Jones was the one who came first and the inspiration for both Tomb Raider and Uncharted.
The soldier that could not hit Indy on the horse must have been a storm trooper in another movie!

I haven't seen the movie in many years, but I remember at some point someone saying that you couldn't look directly at the power emanating from the ark and that's why Indy knows he has to close his eyes.
I don't think it's said in the film, but not looking at the divine is (I assume) a key part of biblical lore, which Indy has definitely read up on ("any of you went to Sunday school?") which is likely how he knows
Could be wrong but I thought that when the cameras went out, Indiana deduced that he needed to close his eyes.
