I don't think you could've done anything with Varoom and Revavroom because the issue wasn't with the Pokemon but with the audience. Varoom and Revavroom communicate their concept very well-- but if you've never seen a classic car or its engine block then no amount of tweaking and retooling is going to help the audience understand what it is.

Some of the designs worked better for a diff region but i really wanted spain culture. Im latina, i have spaish ancestry, i mean it should be common that latino culture includes spain culture but spain culture does not include latino (not including modern influences). Designs that have latam references calling back to Spain roots its fine by my standards. But are very little references to Spain culture in general, I even feel like some characters are way out of place and do not, I cannot relate to either one of them as a Hispanic. They could certainly really emphasized the culture since generally Hispanics are heavy on culture. Like they couldn't even give us the most basic cultural ref like with any other region. Larger eyes with smaller head and body proportions give characters a childish look to them, which plays into the cute and innocent look you mentioned before. The line is not only inired on Godzilla, but also likely in Concavenator, a Spanish dinosaur, characterized by the pointy hump on its back (the reason the line only has ONE plate instead of many like godzilla). Another important thing about Conca is how its fossil preserves what could be feather attachment points on its arms, which is what I believe the warm- coloured things are meant to represent.

my main issue with the designs in this game is that they don't look like animals anymore. like, barely at all, unless they're dogs. seriously, go through the paldea pokedex and count how many of these guys are humanoid bipedal. we have fully two of the starters that evolve into Some Guy, and I think folks tend to like the third option, in part, because it looks like an animal. it's not even just bipedal pokemon that I have an issue with... Charizard still looks like an animal! like... proportionally, I'm not gonna confuse him for a guy in a costume. and it's not just humanoid pokemon I'm irked by either... a Gardevoir standing next to its trainer is obviously something that looks like a person, but isn't. plus, Gardevoir is an _exception_ to the general rule of "pokemon=animal" for that region... and on top of that, Gardevoir has very pleasing design proportions, with the rounded head, thinner upper body, and flowy dress, which makes the design feel filled out, and balanced in silhouette, but still light and airy. it looks like something that has more creature design in its physiology than a human character would/could have. I think designs like ceruledge do a good job handling the humanoid pokemon look, but stuff like Quaquaval is just very awkwardly balanced.
but I think the most damning part of all of them is the 3D models, and their lack of proper pose. I think part of the cycle she was talking about in the beginning, where people hate it initially and then come around, is due to the fact that, at first, you're seeing these pokemon through their in-game models, and they look stiff, awkward, lifeless, and any weirdly balanced designs are very noticeable because they aren't being helped by their pose and presentation. but then the artists in the TCG and the anime get their hands on them, and actually breathe some canonical life into them, and bam! people actually start to see the appeal! and especially because, when someone is drawing the pokemon and not modeling them in a computer, they get to think about the little things, like making Arboliva's branches have distinct leaves, rather than being one jagged green shape blob per arm, or figuring out what the hell kind of textures are on Skeledirge... is it paper mache? its teeth don't make sense at all... they're like, part of its lip? are the bottom ones made of bone? god, it's so sad when you remember how easy it was to tell what the early gen pokemon were made out of. they were animals. you could tell. Skeledirge _looks_ like it started as a 3D model, and I think that's actually a huge problem when it comes to your immersion in this world. the human characters are looking more and more realistic, and the pokemon are looking more and more like they could never exist on earth.

EDIT: Like, I get disliking Sawk, Mr. Mime, and those kinds of "just a guy" pokemon; but Furrybait 'mons aren't really that bad.

Both anthropomorphic designs, but one can reasonably be seen as a living creature in a fantasy world, and the other one looks like a guy wearing a spandex which it's adaptations seem more like gimmicks that don't make sense or aren't given any context of why they have them and make more sense as humanmaded species. That's also one of the main reasons greninja is the most liked pokemon in general, it strikes the perfect balanced of that cool anthropomorphic look without it getting uncanny, like using the long tongues frogs have as a way to give it a scarf.

I think the community feedback part was a really smart idea, and the emulating the official pose really helps with understanding what was changed and what was kept. I honestly really like these designs. I don't think there was a single one I had any real issue with while watching this video. Even Gholdengo being the chest Gimmighoul hides in come to life is a really interesting idea compared to the golden boyband looking thing we got.

My thoughts (For the negative 3 people who care)
Crocalor: I think this Pokémon is the worst of the line, but I actually love the Mexican influence. Yes Mexico and Spain are two different places, but the Mexican people are descendants of Spaniards. I’d say for me I like the idea of making it quadrupedal and just put the nest on his back. It keeps the idea without using something from a Mexican stereotype. However this redesign does fell better. It’s the same concept but it’s cuter and feels like a better through line.
Quaquaval and Quaxwell: I love Quaquaval and I had little problem with it. Especially the dance. That brings it to life. Quaxwell in my opinion is a lackluster execution of a decent concept. If it’s ballet, make it look more elegant. I get it’s an awkward middle stage. Just make it overconfident with nothing to back it up.
Spidops: I don’t have any complaints for Spidops honestly. I thought it was awesome. I would have used it more if it weren’t for it being monotype. It wasn’t as usable as other recent bug types.
Squakabilly: This guy was just ok to me. Though for Pokémon, indifference is bad. The jacket is a simple change that makes a world of difference.
The no inspiration mindset: While it’s perfectly fine to dislike a Pokémon’s design, it is ridiculous to say “Did they even try.” Logistically there is an enormous amount of work that goes into each mon. I’m sure most get many passes before they’re finalized.
Rellor: It’s face is ridiculous but I didn’t even see it when I first caught it. This is better.
Palafin: I do wish base Palafin had more differences than Finnizen, but I absolutely love Palafin. He’s absolutely ridiculous in the best way in my opinion. It’s like one of those superhero parody gag characters.
Varoom and Revavroom. The designs themselves are great in my opinion. The problem is how it is presented in game. Design wise, I’d say add something that is more recognizable to a wider audience. Non car junkies won’t get it.
Flamigo: All they had to do was just add one extra feature to set it apart. Finnizen is really just a dolphin, but there are enough small changes to make it more dynamic and endearing. Hell just change the face to be cuter and less droopy.
Frigibax and Arctibax: I like Arctibax. Really it’s the only one I like in the line. I feel bad being this negative but Frigibax is just stupid. It feels weak. A lot of Psuedos aren’t necessarily strong on their own, but you can tell it has the potential to be very threatening. I know Baxcaliber really disappointed me. It look like a shoddily made Kaiju outfit. The originals worked because of the angles you view it. When you are close enough in height, the facade breaks. They should’ve just done what they did with Tyranitar and take more liberties in terms of proportion.
Gimmighoul: It is fun but it was a little too simple. Just make the little guy inside a bit bigger and a little closer to Gholdengo. Then make it so it completely opens and make it open like a Jack in the Box. It would have been interesting if you made the concept that it is trapped in the chest and you release it to get Gholdengo. Hell you can even make a dark Pokédex entry where it says that Gholdengo has that chest because it plans to trap another soul in it to continue the cycle.
Dudunsparce: This wasn’t redesigned but I actually love him. I get why people are upset. But it’s actually all those things that make me love it. It’s like he was so pathetic that he couldn’t even evolve right. I’m biased since I’ve been shiny hunting a Three-Segmented version, but I’ve been well acquainted with the design and it grew on me significantly.

This comment is exactly what I would do for a video like this, so now I feel like I'm legally obligated to care. I honestly agree with most of your opinions, even the one about not trying. Ever since I subscribed to Lockstin, I've actually tried to distance myself from the "they didn't try" argument. There's, I feel, effort put into every Pokemon from possible design influences to neat little quirks. Doesn't mean I have to like it but the specific critique just feels disrespectful.

I love the Spidops! I felt that the main problem was that with how the full thing looked more like a robot than a spindle and thread. That and the needles for the arms? Simple but does a lot for the all over feel of the body with them being more pointed and elongated.

  • @HateSonneillon
    @HateSonneillon Před rokem +7

I think part of the issue with flamigo is that angle that they show it at. Its a pokemon that looks better from the side since you can't see much from the front. So simply posing it that way does so much for it. I also think the colors are an issue, just being pink is bland, and I've seen people just color the body red and its so much better. I love your tatsugiri idea btw!

It's great that you could acknowledge that part of your problem came from the change in design ethic between generations, and the fact that you look for different things in a pokemon. That being said, this experiment was definitely an example of someone going too far in the opposite direction.
It's good to have your finger on the community's pulse so you can get an idea of what's your own personal pet peeve and what's an objective flaw, but also forcing yourself to satisfy the whole community takes away the design's value to yourself.
Despite your exhaustion at the end of the video though, I think my favorite redesign from this video it your Goldengo design. I absolutely hate how Goldengo looks, solely because they threw away the mimic inspiration from Gimmighoul. I wouldn't mind it so much if it was from a different evolution line, but I liked that they took the mimic theming from Voltorb and Amungus and created a full-on mimic pokemon.

I love your take on these redesigns and thoughts over all, along with the system you set up on who all to redesign and gathering community feedback! The Paldea region always felt off to me whenever they showed off a new pokemon, or when seeing leaks of the new mons. Lots of them felt like they just, didn't work or mix well with older mons or as pokemon in general, and I could never put my finger on it. But seeing your take on them and all the thought you put into the designs and research and all that was really refreshing and I found myself agreeing with you on most aspects!
