I have a suggestion Mark, and that is to read 1st paragraph first, then questions quickly, then the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs, again questions quickly, and finally the last paragraph. please notice that at the second and third time of going over the questions less time is required because you already have some of them answered. This really works for me.

Strongly agree!! Because nobody knows if the first question is in the D paragraph, that would just simply make us anxious, in this limited time. However, with the paragraph goes, the number of questions which is left also goes down.

In my opinion, reading speed and comprehension could be improved through regular reading of both printed and electronic materials in English. If one spends at least 1.5 hours every day actively reading any material, in the persons reading speed and comprehension would eventually improve. Moreover, such a person's vocabulary would also improve due to regular reading.

In my opinion, first of all, the best way to improve reading speed and comprehension is to have such a goal. After the goal is clear we can proceed forward and try to see what is logically going to help us with that. I personally would prefer to start with reading any English book according to the estimation of my reading level and vocabulary. Being honest with myself I simply start reading the material I can handle and writing down all the unknown words for making my vocabulary more advanced.
Also, it is very important to keep on going to my goal and never give it up, knowing that practice in every aspect of my life will make my endeavor perfect. These are the methodological principles I would use in improving my reading speed and comprehension.
Thank you, Mark for your videos! They are very helpful.

Thanks for the Video.I used to read the sections in paragraph once/twice and then start looking for the answers. The Paraphrase is all over the sections. So i find its wise to cover all the sections and look for the answers rather than going the reverse way.I may be wrong in my approach but till now its working for me..and one more thing I just go for a quick glance rather than understanding each word.I am not a native speaker. So its not easy for me to know each word in the sections .So i used to complete the Paragraph to get an idea of the meaning of it.

What I generally incorporate is that I set myself timers for certain paragraphs and give myself tasks of understanding the theme of those paragraphs. Repeating the same process multiple times, you will become a fast reader.
Your strategy of reading the questions and then reading the paragraphs seems to suit me because, I am a fast reader. Thank you for this idea.

    • @ravitejaayyagari7826
      @ravitejaayyagari7826 Pƙed 6 lety +2

I am also trying a different strategy to tackle this section. The idea is to read the first paragraph, write down the topics in 2-3 word. Ideally, there will be not more than 2 or 3 topics that are discussed in each paragraph. After reading all the 5 paragraphs, you will have 12-15 words/ topics. You have 9 questions. Fitting After reading each question, you will have the words ready. I think this might work. I will let you know if I succeeded with this strategy by the end of tomorrow.

Hey, I think the best way to improve reading speed is to read a passage like we do in METV series listen and repeat and to improve the comprehension, you need to learn more vocabulary daily basis.
Narwhals are also referred to as death-like - puzzling - aboriginal folklore - mating behavior - pattern - jeopardy - endangered - mottled - harvested - corpse - lack dorsal fins - beaks - a thick layer of blubber - spiraling tusk - protrude - horn-like - embeded in the skull - roughly - algae - thus appearing - elders alike - harpoon rope - dragged - enables whales - intrigues - rubbing - for as-yet unknown reasons - theorise - aimed at displaying - scarce - are we done?
    Take care!

Hi Mark, I have a confusion in 3rd part of reading. In one of your videos, you've mentioned a strategy to read paragraph first then scan all the questions ; however, in this video you've recommended a strategy, where the questions are to be read first then the paragraphs. My question is which strategy is to be followed for getting answers quickly ?

I think you should use a different strategy for each of the four tasks. In my CELPIP reading book, I discuss each of the strategies. 😃

To improve reading speed...we have to make a habit of readings news papers, or reading favorite subject magazine.
, story book etc. It can also help us if v read it on daily bases...so that our reading speed also increase accordingly..

This article is really hard to understand. Because there are many words I don't know. These unknown words are special terms.I think we need to read more articles and learn words in reading. If we have a large number of words, our comprehension ability and reading speed can be improved. :-)

Question 5 - Russia, Greenland and Norway also have aboriginal people. It didn't mention Canadian aboriginal in the passage, just local aboriginal and the northern aboriginal legend could have been from any of these countries. I would have answered E, which would have been wrong. This question is confusing, anyone agree?
