Marie, a suggestion for a video might be a large vase or pot. Specifically I am trying to make a large bird bath. I was thinking two piece pedestal and bowl for top. Most interested in technique for throwing large cylinder or pedestal. Thanks

Thanks, Marie, for showing us how to use glaze transfer paper! Looks like so much fun! As always, I really appreciate your clear step-by-step directions! Quick question ~ do you recommend using the "satin" finish glaze instead of the glossy, more shiny clear over transfers or underglazes, and if so, why? I wasn't sure if the satin finish is supposed to make the transfers or underglazes look better than a glossy glaze does? Or if a satin or glossy finish is simply a preference of how the piece will look? Thanks again for all your work teaching us!
Thank you. 😀Good question MaryJean. When we think of satin glaze we think of a more matt finish. For some reason, amaco calls this clear glossy glaze stain. 😊

Hi Marie, great videos!! Maybe you could make one to explain the difference between glazing vs under glazing? I watched your speckle glaze/bubble glaze video's in which you use black underglaze + a transparant glaze. Could you do this in theory as well with a black glaze, let dry and a transparant glaze on top? Glazing/Underglazing/Engobes - its all a bit unclear to me... Thanks!
Thank you for the suggestion I will put it on my list. 😍 Underglazes are mainly for drawing and decorating, made mainly with clay and colorants, they don't have enough silica in them to vitrify (glass Like) your pottery or make it food safe. That's why glaze is applied to underglaze. If you draw with a black glaze the pattern will not be as defined as an underglaze. That's where it gets its name underglaze - used under your glaze. Hope this helps 😊

Love your videos! if you wanted to dip the entire piece in non clear glaze, could you go in with wax around the decal so that there would be no glaze on it?

Hi! i know this is an old video but have you ever experimented with painting another color of underglaze onto the paper? I would want to try this to see if i could “color in” a design. Would it get them to layer so that the outline overlaps the added color (making it look cleaner)

Hi Marie i learn so much on your tips and trick but i have trouble whit my kiln i dont realy know how to set this one i always use automatic fast glaze or bisk but the big pièces come déform a little. Do you have a vidéo on how to program my kiln. Thank you Marie for every thing
Happy to help, Robert! I only have a program video for my touch screen programmer. You may be firing your pottery too fast. Next time set the kiln for a slow or medium bisque and glaze fire. 😊👍

How about placing glaze decals on top of one another? Do you need to go back up to bisque temp between adding each new layer?
Very good question Lynnette. 😊 If you apply one decal over another you do risk smuggling your first decal.
It would be safer to bisque again. Or you can apply one decal layer on greenware and bisque fire it. Then apply another decal over the bisqued decal. I have applied decal transfers to greenware and bisque ware both with good results.

I was wondering, can you apply a glossy glass as a base first, wait for it to dry, then apply the underglaze decal, then wait a few hours and apply a coat of clear glaze? I'd like to do a mug with decals, but don't want the background to be the plain white of the clay? thanks
Thank you, Jocelyn. That is a very good question. That is something I have never experimented with. My teacher had told me years ago that it can't be done because you will smear the glaze and the underglaze decal won't stick properly. You could however color your greenware with underglaze or slip then bisque fire it. Then apply your decal transfers to your piece. 👍😊
I was with a potter friend today and asked her if she has ever had success applying Underglaze decals on top of the glaze. She said yes, but you have to dab the decal with a sponge and be careful not to smug the decal. Hope this helps. 😊

Good question. If you want the decal over the red underglaze you will have to apply the red underglaze to your greenware (before you bisque fire). Then after you bisque fire it, you can apply your decals 😊
I usually fire my clear glaze to cone 6. Will these decals fir to cone 6? Can these decals be used on leather hard clay and then fired to cone 04, then glazed with a clear glaze and then fired to cone 6?
Very Good question. Yes you can fire to cone 6, and Yes you can apply them to greenware and bisque. I have done it both ways. I acually like using them better on leather hard clay. 😊

Hi Claudia. That's a good question. Yes, you can put it on leather hard and bone dry clay before you bisque fire. I have done it successfully. You have to be careful with bone dry clay because the clay is at its most fridge state. 😊
Hi Marie, I am a newbie to pottery world and I really like all your pottery videos. I ordered the underglaze from Amazon and they came in folded. Is it okay to store the underglaze sheets folded for long? If not how should I store the sheets?

Thank you, Joyce. I used Amaco A-Mix #11 Stoneware, White Clay. It's on the soft side, but I love it like that. You can wedge some of the extra water out.

Welcome to the wonderful world of pottery crafting. 😍 Very good question. No, you can apply the decals to greenware and bisqueware. I have done it successfully both ways.
I used a Stroke and Coat Wonderglaze on greenware and then bisque-fired. However, when I tried to apply a decal on the smooth glossy surface (for a glaze firing), it turned to a puddle. So, I tried to apply a decal over unfired greenware over top of a 3-layer underglaze application (want opaque colour), it turned into smudge. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can only seem to make decals work on naked clay and then put on a clear glaze after bisque-firing. I really want colour behind my decals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Linda. This worked for me. I have applied regular underglaze (not stroke and coat because it contains too much flux and silica). You can also use colored slip on your greenware and then bisque fire. Then apply the decal. Let dry really well and gently apply clear glaze as I did in the video. I don't apply too much pressure with the brush and never get smuggling. Hope this works for you 😊

Hi! How long do you leave the paper on? I tried this last night yours was better hah. This was on the outside of a bowl, and I kept it damp while using my sponge. I had to let it sit for a minute before peeling and got 95% of the undergl transfer.
Hi Michelle. Are you allowing the transfers to dry after sponging and pressing with your rib? The underglaze needs time to transfer off the paper and onto the pot. Then when the transfer sticks to the paper press your wet sponge back on paper and allow it dry again before trying to removing the paper again. I hope this helps.
@Pottery Crafters OK will do that, I think I forgot a step because I just kept it damp. I did damp, stroking with sponge, checked it. Still not right, dampen again and keep it damp. I will slow down a bit now.
Yes. Dampen a bit if you have to and wait for it dry again. This gives the underglaze a chance to transfer to your pot. 😊
What would happen if you underglaze the greenware with a solid colour and then use a transfer after the piece has been bisqued? And then fire again with a clear glaze? Will that work?

I just bought some Sanbao underglaze decals and am confused! Your video makes sense if you are applying them to bisqued objects but the directions that came with the decals say you can use them with greenware/leather hard objects. If you do that, can you still apply glaze (the directions do NOT say that the glaze should be clear) at that stage and when kilned, will your bisqued object still show the colors and designs from the decals?
Great question Karen.😀 I have applied the decals to leather hard clay with the same results. After you apply your decals then Bisque fire and you can apply the clear glaze to make your piece food safe. The glaze doesn't have to be clear but you want to use a glaze that you can see your decals through like a celadon glaze. It's just like underglazing greenware and bisqueware. You can apply at either of these stages. 👍😊

Good question. Yes, you can. Just back sure the decal is dry and you don't apply too much pressure with your brush. Gently glide the glaze over your decals.😊

Can you put paint your ceramics then put the decal on
Yes you can glaze first but it is tricky because the glaze can wet from the underglaze decal and come off the pot. I would recommend glaze firing then use an overglaze decal and fire to cone 020. 😊
Can colour glaze also be applied?
Yes, you can but you have to be very careful when you apply the decals. Pat them with a sponge so they don't smear. 😊
Why does the clear liquid glaze need to be strained?
That is a good question. That's how I was taught. The teacher said so you don't brush any clumps of glaze on your pottery. She said it's easy than trying to scrape any clumps or debris that could be in the glaze and get on your pottery. 😊
How can I make my own transfer?
Good question Dawn. Find a picture you like. Reverse it if you need to. Print it out, then trace it with a pencil on tracing paper. Then color with three coats of underglaze. Make sure your underglaze is not too thick or not too thin or it won't stick to your pot. After it dries. give it a quick dip in water and place it on your greenware. I don't know how well it works on bisqueware because I have only made my own and placed it on greenware. You may also like this underglaze technic for transferring your own patterns or pictures. Is for five hours for fireing
Depending on the temperature and speed you fire to. Firing should take around 8 hours, then the kiln shuts down, and it takes a least another 8 hours to cool.
