    So glad I bought all my games during fire sales in 2002-2003. Most of these were only a few quid sealed back then. Sega Bass fishing was only sold with the fishing controller online in the UK (which is why it's so rare). The online store was only accessible via the Dreamcast browser. There was a few other things that were online exclusive for the UK, including the PAL Coloured controllers (orange, yellow, green and blue) and the Sonic Adventure 2 Anniversary edition. I remember trying to purchase that with the 33k modem and it sold out in about 2 minutes.

    Another great video Pete.
    It goes to show that although the dc is still the cheapest system to collect for, a lot of the prices have went up
    Apart from sambi (which hasn't really changed price) The most expensive game when I was collecting was rez at 35quid.
    A dc hidden gems vid would be cool too. I did one 3years ago(a very basic vid) but it would be cool to see what games have gotten more popular over the years.

      About 5 -6 years ago a used DC with a controller and often VMU included sold at shops for $20(USD) in perfect working order. Now I cannot locate a used console (only) for under $100, typically $180! Some want even more! Thankfully I knew my original wouldn’t last forever and had the foresight to buy a couple more for $20-25 and blessed to be given my brother’s for free! If SEGA would by miracle release a “Dreamcast Classic Mini” as they did with the Mega Drive/Genesis and retain optical disc use my problems would be solved! But not expecting it to happen (though if they combined a SEGA CD, Saturn and Dreamcast into one Classic machine capable of playing virtually all games (a cart slot for for older machines would be cheap), they would sell 100 million by Noon and be the first vintage company to run their entire library (32xCD included, cuz why not?). It would be historic!

Considering the lack of RPGs on the system I'd say it's definitely worth picking up for serious RPG fans, but doesn't warrant the high price tag.

      +onaretrotip You can't really justify paying that kind of stupid money for a game I'll go 60 max unless it's in a bundle I feel the kind of collectors who throw money at everything can't value their collection as much as people who have spent hours searching or miles traveling on the hunt for sensible deals, ultimately it's these kind of collectors that get bored and move on to something else, simply because they have invested money, but not the time to source the games they own.

    I love how every CZcamsr that has a complete set, or all the rare Dreamcast games managed to buy EVERY SINGLE GAME at a great price, and a lot less than what people tend to sell them for. Come on guy, you didn't get EVERY SINGLE GAME dirt cheap.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  Před 7 lety

      I can guarantee you that I paid under the going rate for every single game in the full Dreamcast set, thanks to some wheeling and dealing and patience. I didn't get them dirt cheap by any means. Many on this list I got for nothing or very very cheap (like Project Justice, Taxi 2, Samba de Amigo, Bass Fishing). But other games I paid a lot for. For example, I paid about £55 for MoHo, £70 for Cannon Spike, and £95 for Evolution 2. Way under the going rates, but not "dirt cheap" by any means.
      So, I absolutely did get every game at a great price, fact. But I did not get every game dirt cheap.

    What’s a “quid” and do they swim? (Icebreaker). I’m very new to PAL, as I live in the States. One question I’ve had for a long time is why did the region choose PAL? That’s 10HZ/FPS lower than the 60 I’m used to. Did PAL simply come out sooner and became the default, or are there other reasons or advantages to it VS NTSC/60HZ? Saving a sliver of power, perhaps?
    Great video! Dreamcast is my all time favorite system! I’m currently building one and a 17” flatscreen PC monitor into a suitcase (using the VGA-Cable) for rainy days on vacation, and just to originate, design and successfully complete a project born solely of my own mind and design (we all need accomplishments to be proud of, and once assembled I’ll know I conceived and completed it on my own as well as having a portable that beats the living snot out of anything else on the market, full of surprises I’m not ready to reveal! :)
    My only concern is that partially due to my being silly and partially due to my 4 Dreamcasts being 22 years old, 3 of the 4 Dreamcasts are now finicky when it comes to reading discs. This is due to the tiny laser-calibration screw being nudged or bumped 1/16th” in either direction being able to prevent discs from being read and played at all, OR, when set said 1/16th” in the right direction, having an absolutely pristine image and flawless gameplay. I have no interest in replacing my optical drives with a GD-EMU. My games are on disc and I’m not going to convert them all to SD Card format nor download images illegally. I also love the loud sound of a proper DC spinning. Have you any tips on setting the calibration screws just right and locking them into place? Or am I better off trying to find a real repair shop with guaranteed work or buying replacement GD-ROM drives? Any help would be massively appreciated! Thank you and take care!

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  Před 2 lety

      I think PAL vs NTSC was for several reasons, one being differences in power, and PAL was supposed to be newer (improved) technology. You'd have to research it as I'm no expert.
      I don't really know much about hardware mods either I'm afraid, I always get other people to do them for me. I have a GDEMU Dreamcast which is awesome, but I kept a standard unmodded one too for my disc games.

    • @HollowRick
      @HollowRick Před 2 lety +1

      In the 1950s, the Western European countries began plans to introduce colour television, and were faced with the problem that the NTSC standard demonstrated several weaknesses, including colour tone shifting under poor transmission conditions, which became a major issue considering Europe's geographical and weather-related particularities. To overcome NTSC's shortcomings, alternative standards were devised, resulting in the development of the PAL and SECAM standards. The goal was to provide a colour TV standard for the European picture frequency of 50 fields per second (50 hertz), and finding a way to eliminate the problems with NTSC.
      Just to add as well pal does run at a higher resolution than NTSC but unfortunately due to poor conversions our games were squished due to the resolution not being used..
      Thank god 70% of pal dreamcast games support pal 60hz :D
      Now days it's a moot point thanks to hdmi and modern displays
      But back then Jesus did we get screwed in the Pal region up until the Xbox 360 and PS3
      And a "quid" Is UK slang for a £1 coin

      @majinya6199 Před 2 lety +1

      @@HollowRick PAL is better in everyway imo, Only downside is the 50hz for gaming as 50hz for tv shows and movies didn't effect it they were filmed for 24fps while NTSC had lot of ghosting since it forced shows and movies to 30fps. Anyway PAL has higher resolution and better colours over NTSC and the 50hz problem got solved in the 90s with 60hz PAL tvs it's just not any of the consoles support it until the Dreamcast and even then like you said there was still a lot of games that were just 50hz.

    Floored to see Evolution 2 go for so much. It's a pretty fun game -- average but decent humor -- but that price is nuts! I can't think of any North American release that fetches that amount, taking the exchange rate into account. Cannon Spike, GigaWing 2, and Mars Matrix go for a bit.

    • @onaretrotip
      @onaretrotip  Před 8 lety

      +TGApuleius Yeah, Evolution 2 is a crazy price compared to the North American version, that's $140-170 at the current exchange rate (which is actually really low, usually it's $1.70 to a pound and currentl;y it's only $1.40). GigaWing 2 and Mars Matrix are two great shooters that we sadly didn't get in Europe, so I need to pick those up at some point.

      +onaretrotip yeah, I remember something similar with the Saturn. I went into Dixons once and they just seemed to want shot of their Saturn games and they were all about £5. I got a bunch but the one that stands out most now is Burning Rangers as I've seen that at some pretty steep prices. The two DC games I have are Project Justice and Shenmue 2. I got them both new and they're in perfect condition so that's nice - in fact, when I open Shenmue 2 it still has that new game smell about it for some reason! Really wanted Cannon Spike, Rez and Samba De Amigo back at the time. I can't even remember why I didn't get them now, but it was an error, ha ha!

    Shenmue 2 sealed is where the money is at. That will stand as the most sought after Dreamcast game and collectors of all sorts are trying hard to get their hands on a sealed pal copy of Shenmue 2, some titles are rarer but Shenmue 2 sealed is the showpiece for any collection.

I could have bought the entire PAL set in practically a few days, as they were all readily available, but where's the fun in that? And to be honest, it's not like we're talking 30 Euros here, I paid around £1000 for the full set through these means (searching for deals, and wheeling and dealing), and now, two years later, it's worth almost £4400.
