- Life in a typical Russian family - my typical Russian family :) Welcome to Sochi, Russia 🇷🇺 A place that breaks all stereotypes about the 'Russian winter', a place where even in mid-December it can top 20'c. We have spent the last few weeks here in southern Russia staying with my Mum, Gran, brother and sister (who moved here from Siberia). Join our day to day lives here in Sochi, working & spending time with our family :)

As an American, I find it fascinating to hear Julia speak English, sometimes with a British accent, sometimes with a Russian accent and sometimes seemingly with a blend of the two.

Love the beginning, Gran asked Matt if he needed the food hotter. Matt just had the biggest slurp before saying that it was okay! Now we know that Julia can cook!!! Matt, you are going to have to give her a house so that she can cook more dishes! Thank you for taking us to Gran's house, always lots of good food there. I have a farm of Persimmon with around 800 trees in Pakistan and its the flat type as you mentioned. If you want to enjoy it, just keep it in open or even a fridge till its skin also gets completely softened and then enjoy eating it. It has the maximum vitamin C than any other fruit.

Your videos are outstanding! You all are calm, easy going and I think you would be great friends to have and share with. I am really enjoying the insight into your lives, family and the communities you are visiting. I have visited many countries and areas, but I doubt I will ever visit , for a lack of a better term, the old soviet countries. Some of it is money, but a large part is the language. I want to learn, but Russian is very technical (difficult). I notice that there is great diversity in the people and cultures, but not in race. In USA, in my opinion, Race (primarily since 2008) has become a great barrier to community, unity and being at ease. So many people make their existence all about being the "victim" and being offended that tension is always high. How when everyone has a cell phone, tv, car, food, housing, are they "poor" and under privilaged? They are rich, self indulgent and lazy! Not what I grew up with, and not the "culture" I want to live with and/or in. Sorry for the rant.
BTW, you call it a salad, and my family refers to these dishes as "side dishes", not the main course, not the appetizer, not the dessert, but rounds out the meal - side dishes. Love the paintings!
The quality of life seems to be really nice in Sochi.

Lovely paintings, Julia. Am loving the tour inside your family's home. You have a wonderful, warm family, which you must always cherish. My brother and I haven't spoken in 30 years or more. Exercising with your sister was hilarious! It's December and there's no snow?? We grow persimmons in Australia too, as well as different varieties of mango. Do mangoes grow in southern Russia as well? I would think they might do well in certain parts.

My family is by no means better off though, unfortunately, this is the longest they have been in one apartment for years (around 5 months) and they had to leave Siberia becuase of finance problems 😔

Same as with Our culture , when challenged financially , We are extended family ( single or married members stays together in 1 house until stable. We are known as few members of family works as overseas worker to augment family income or to earn for future investment. 😘

I love videos like this, showing life in a different country, different foods, cultures, etc. I love that you two really keep up your humor. You obviously have fun doing all this and it shows. Thankyou for sharing. I love the Russian salads. I eat salad a lot and this gives me ideas how to mix it up a bit. My salads are entire meals too. Those spiced apple buns looked really good.

you guys always deliver a very interesting and enjoyable vlog to entertain us. BTW, a common salad here in the states is a chicken salad with grapes and other goodies, laced with mayo. Usually served as a side or as a lunch on a bed of lettuce leaves. (also try a cottage cheese salad covered with canned sliced peaches on lettuce leaves) Julia, you first painting of the birch trees is really really good!!!! I would buy it and brag that I have a Julia original. Matt, you may want to get Julia checked out. It was very concerning how she ZONED OUT in the kitchen!!!! If happens frequently, it may be a sign of a brain disorder!🤣🤣😂😂👍👍(just teasing) Next time instead of speeding up the exercising video, try slowing it down, it might be funnier! Take care! Jealous! You have such a beautiful family. We lack that in America. Everyone is always busy looking for the best new thing. Friends are usually more important than family in the US. Not all... but most. I made my kids watch this video due to US schools teach that Russia is bad. I told them that there is much more to the story and to stop listening to all the propaganda. Now... they're watching your videos on their own and they love them. I'm happy now and Thank you!

@@MattandJulia Hahaha! You go Gran! 👍🏻👏🏻😁 Sharon fruit is grown locally in the Western Cape province (for the last 20 years or so). Most of the fruit are exported, especially to the UK and EU, but it is readily available here when in season (April/May, start of our winter). The "traditional" persimmons is possibly also grown in that region, but is very scarce in shops. One of my Top 5 fruits! Lots of love to all of you and tell Gran I fully support her in keeping you guys on your toes! 😂❤
PS: Sharon fruit can be eaten while still firm, it is not astringent like persimmon when not ripened fully. I actually prefer it firm, before it gets too "mushy"....

Julia - I think you are right to call them salads. I looked up the the definition of a salad -a cold dish of various mixtures of raw or cooked vegetables, usually seasoned with oil, vinegar, or other dressing and sometimes accompanied by meat, fish, or other ingredients.

RE using a blanket. Nina Totenburg of National Public Radio did most of her morning reports at 4-6AM in the morning and she would go into a her bathroom and put a blanket over her head to record her reports. The bathroom removed all of the outside sounds and the blanket removed the echoes from the bathroom walls.
Did you get the train from Adler to Krasnodar? Thought we could hack it, but decided to fly on our return journey for not much more cash 😂. It didn’t help that the conductor thought my bag was unattended, and therefore a bomb! - wife’s family are from Krasnodar, and we holidayed in Sochi (also the Adler zone) when we visit. I think because most people got off the train at Sochi main the conductor decided my bag was unattended. At least its nice that they take their train security as we take our airport security 👍 hope you have a happy Christmas (or two) and new year.
