How to Shoot & Edit Multicam using Tentacle Sync !

  • Not sponsored by Tentacle Sync in any way but since these little devices really help me a LOT for my multicam shoots I took some time to share with you how they work and how I use them. I have zero issues and they are easy to use so I feel that the team behind is very smart and user focused.
    Of course the only issue is the price, it's definitely not cheap ! At least for me, it was a pretty big budget, but I do a lot of offline multicam work so it was really worth it. Hope that at some point they have enough volume to offer lower prices ! If you don't have the budget and don't want to sync everything by hand neither I recommend you sync using sound with Plural Eyes. Anyways, hope you like the video !
    Here's the link for the Premiere Pro tutorial : • How to sync with timec...
    Of course there many more ways to sync and edit multicam. I didn't talk about FinalCut / Avid since I don't use them. I've heard positive things about Avid and multicam editing.

    Excellent presentation and fantastic looking, as always! One thing to clarify - the BMPCC4k is the only camera I know of that listens on the 3.5mm audio jack for timecode signal audio and aligns its internal clock with that signal - an exceptionally professional feature in such a low cost camera! Also, to add - if you have an audio recorder that outputs timecode (like the Zoom F4/6/8), the Tentacle boxes can be synced to that timecode and then be attached to the camera(s) - from there, the audio from the F unit (or similar) will have the timecode "burned in" and the editing software will recognize it, without having to go the route through the Tentacle Studio software.

      @gregausina Před 5 lety

      Thomas Donalek I was surprised about this feature as well. As you said it is impressive because I never saw that anywhere else. And it is very useful because the audio TC signal can be tricky sometimes. If it is not properly levelled it wont be decoded and being able to check on the field that the signal is ok on the camera osd is a relief.

    Hello!
    First of all, thanks for your premium quality videos. Awesome work!
    There is one important thing to know about the technic you described though: syncing cameras with a TC feed will only be 100% efficient with short and medium takes. In my expérience, beyond a 30 minutes take, you cannot rely on a good sync every time...
    For exemple, for a 2h concert, even with Tentacle Es, you WILL have at least a 2 or 3 frames drift of sync... unless you also genlock all your camera with a Ref signal (also known as "Genlock" or "Sync" signal) that will really set all your cameras to have the same exact speed as well.
    Sending an ultra accurate TC signal is not enough to prevent a drift of sync because it is just a signal that sends figures: it numbers every frame the camera records but it doesn't force the camera to change its natural speed(*) to match the speed of the Tentacle! So, since the Tentacle and the camera never have the exact same speed, on the long run, you'll still get a drift...
    So Tentacle Es are very good products but if you shoot long multicam takes you'd better try the Ultrasync One from Timecode System that will provide a TC signal AND a Ref signal to your cameras.
    www.timecodesystems.com/products-home/ultrasync-one-2/
    (*) except on ARRI cameras that have the option to match their speed with a simple input TC signal.

    Another amazing video!
    One question: I saw in another video regarding the Tentacle Sync E, was that if the camera generates timecode on its own then all you need to do is jam sync and then you are able to remove the device once everything is synced (and then use it on another device). Example the Ursa Mini Pro and Pocket 4k are known to generate timecode without the dedicated audio channel overlay that DSLR cameras need. That being said have you tried unplugging the Tentacle Sync E to see if the time code on the camera stays consistent? I would really like to know because that can reduce the cost of buying multiple Syncs if one can be used to Jam sync multiple devices to your app.
    Second question: In your video it looks like you just dropped your footage into Resolve, I like using a PC these days and I know Tentacle Sync only has the studio made for IOS/Mac. But I am guessing from your video the studio isn't necessary.?

    Recommend you mention time audio/video delay as video clips usually lag behind the audio by a few frames, due to the time it takes for the camera to process the video information. In my case this is typically 4 frames at 25 fps (i.e. 160 msec). Check your system with a clapper board and a test recording.

    Hello, your video is surprisingly clear and full of valuable information. May you elaborate a bit on audio: if we using the audio channel to transfer the bzzzz timecode sound how may we transfer the real audio content of the video. I imagine we need two audio channels one for timecode and the other for the audio content. For example we may use one of the standard two stereo channels for timecode and the other for the audio content. In this case we waive the stereo quality for the audio content, but we get the timecode sync. Is that so that it is working?

  • @jspafford
    @jspafford Před 4 lety

    Great channel. Didn’t know about this product. Kinda wish it would communicate in real-time with units that were in range to keep a constant sync. Like some of the lockit boxes and a few other companies make ones that do this. Or you could just use regular wireless mics with mini XLR adapters. One transmitter and a bunch of IFB or headphone receivers. The tour guide kits. Or just get a good sound recordist with Zaxcom gear which all have wireless timecode with an accurate clock built into every transmitter and receiver. Love zaxcom.
    And avid uses AAFs. Not xml. They should by now. They’re stubborn like that.

    Only one question ... i seem to have missed into your video.
    Let's say we have a x5 Multicam system .... Do i have to buy 5 tentacle devices ... or can i do my work perfectly fine with only ONE by feeding it to all my cameras one after the other ... for a whole day shooting..????

    • @zebrazone
      @zebrazone  Před 4 lety +1

      Hey !! Thank you so much. I did run into this issue when I could only afford two modules. Well it depends of your cameras. With blackmagic cameras I could just jam the module camera after camera before a 2hour concert, without having to leave one per camera, and it would be ok. It's ok if you are doing very long footage (like 1-3 hours long) because the starting timecode will be very close between the cameras. If you are doing plenty of small videos with one camera (a few seconds each time) well the timecode of the camera will probably drift as hours pass so you will loose accuracy. So for a whole day shoot, if you have 3 cameras which will record big long takes, I think it should be ok if every 2-3 hours you s come back to each camera stop rec, plug the Tentacle sync in again, and start rec again

      Found the answer to my question after a little bit more digging into the video (@ 5:53). thank you in advance. Any suggestion for such animation program if needed?
    Second question is what do you use to record given portion of the screen, (at best in 4k)
    ( chosen window of interest)
    I'm using BM DavinciResolve
    Thank you for great work .

      After Effects is definitely the way to go !! I use Snagit 2019 which works great for screen captures.

    Hi Zebra Zone, do the timecode things you connect to the camera need to be plugged in all the time while shooting?

      Have you thought about switching to DaVinci Resolve? I had used SV for about 2 years but decided to switch last year since DR seemed to have a more "up to date" feel. I'm so glad that I switched. It took some learning but coming from Sony Vegas it's not too bad. Compared to SV, DR is faster (in editing and rendering), easier short cuts, and doesn't crash like SV did for me. Plus the Color Grading is out of this world.

      Struggled as well !! What I did was import into Premiere and then export to Resolve.... not great so I wouldn't recommend that. That could change though !
