    From what I've read, in reality Selim wasn't a drunk or useless.
    He was a very capable prince of his province and a peaceful ruler. During his reign he took back important places. He didn't go to wars as a sultan because he paid more attention to the navy, and Sultans didn't have to go there. One of the reasons he might have been mistaken as a drunk was because he allowed the taverns for non Muslim to be opened, this for the treasure since he took taxes from them. Muslims weren't allowed to go there.
    Also he was a very intelligent and patient person. It is said that when he was a prince, Selim asked his companion what did the people think. He said that the people and the soldiers wanted Mustafa as the Sultan, while his parents and the viziers wanted Bayezid. Then Selim said
    "Let the strongest want Sultan Mustafa. Let the sultanate of Bayezid be demanded by his parents. Let poor Selim be favored by his Mawla (God)! Let us enjoy ourselves. Tomorrow belongs to God.”

      @@katerinapetrova9443 Actually, as of late, Selim II has been a subject of rehabilitation within history because historians, overall, don't think his rule was in actuality such a wreck. A good example of this is Pinar Kayaalp-Aktan's work, _The Atik Valide Mosque Complex: A testament of Nurbanu’s prestige, power and piety_ . I've heard the quote the person provides at the end here too, although I've heard it recorded a little differently.
      “Selim, the least popular of Suleyman’s sons, quipped that of the three surviving princes, Mustafa had the support of the soldiers and Bayezid of their mother and father, but he, a poor beggar, had only the support of the clerics.” - Leslie P. Bayezid and Selim have been hostile with each other since childhood, no one can deny that this is the fault of their parents. Instead of just being on Selim's side all the time because he's older, Sultan Suleiman and Hürrem Sultan should raise their children properly with no hate, although I guess it becomes inevitable due to the Ottoman succession system.

Mustafa was just playing the role of the wise big brother here, attempting to keep his younger brothers in line, and stopping them from fighting. Cihangir is a very smart young man, he knows that Selim has done the wrong here, and is thus siding with Bayezid. Although I do agree he is sort of a Mustafa yes-man. But like, who wouldn't be lol. Then, Selim stolled Beyazid's gold that Mihrimah send to him, he didn't say it to Syleiman. Then, he tried to kill Beyazid at his palace with poison. Many mistakes from Selim and many secrets from him towards his father. Just like Syleiman told once at Ibrahim Pasha: "hide things don't make you smart, they make you coward". So Selim was a coward.

And regarding being a Sultan…..what about one of the most cruel monarchs in history Sultan Murad and the maniac Sultan Ibrahim who were both Kosem’s sons? Hurrem’s sons’ upbringing is questioned all the time whereas Kosem’s both the sons wrecked havoc during their rule. Hurrem’s son’s rule is considered peaceful whereas both Kosem’s sons’ rules are considered really bad.

      Sultan Murad, son of Kosem, is praised for his brutal, harsh reign and his control over the public. Sultan Ibrahim was locked in the kafes all his life by his older brother Murad and hence became mentally ill and crazy when released. So that's not Kosem's fault. Kosem's sons were united until Murad became Sultan and felt insecure that his Janissaries maybe liked his younger brothers more.
      Sultan Selim, son of Hurrem, was a heavy alcoholic, even when he was just a Shehzade, who kept drinking to soothen his problems and royal struggles and was known as a drunkard by the people. Hurrem couldn't control him and make him stop. She also couldn't stop the enimity between her sons from their childhood itself. Maybe that's why people are blaming her.
      But it all depends on the situations and no individual is to be blamed.

    Why is there almost always tension between Selim and Bayezid? Why can't they simply get on good terms with one another? Is it similar to how harem women were competing with each other for the sultan's love and to bear future princes for the Ottoman Dynasty? In this case, princes were naturally competing for survival by resorting to cruelty because whichever prince succeeded in achieving the throne got all his brothers/half-brothers executed?

    • @TimberlakeTigerGirl
      @TimberlakeTigerGirl Před 7 dny

      Probably because they were born within a year of each other. Siblings with bigger age gaps tend to get along better than those born close to each other. In the case of twins (especially identical twins), since they practically have the exact same DNA or almost identical DNA, their relationship with each other can go either way.

    Mustafa didn't have moral right to judge Bayezid for falling in love with Huricihan. Did he forget that once before he did the same thing with Mihrunisa? Sure, unlike Huricihan, Mihrunisa was not born as member of Ottoman dynasty, but still their love was forbidden by law, too.

      Or maybe they're just speaking the truth 🤷‍♂Selim's actions led to the death of someone and even worse, prevented his wife from complaining to the court using bribery. Their criticisms of him were valid, they weren't just picking sides. Plus, Mustafa was nice to Selim at first, inviting him to take a seat, only interfering when his younger brothers were about to fight, as an elder brother should. Selim started it by quickly assuming they were conspiring against him just because they fell silent when he came.
