The first movement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” also known as the “Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp Minor,” Op. 27, No. 2, is one of the most beloved pieces in the classical music repertoire. Completed in 1801, it features a gentle, flowing melody and a somber mood that captivates listeners with its haunting beauty.
Why is it called “Moonlight Sonata”? The sonata acquired the nickname “Moonlight Sonata” not during Beethoven’s lifetime, but posthumously. The German Romantic poet Ludwig Rellstab described the first movement as reminiscent of moonlight shining upon Lake Lucerne, and by the 1830s, this evocative description had become synonymous with the sonata.
Beethoven’s intention for composing the “Moonlight Sonata” has been a subject of much speculation. While some suggest it reflects his despair over his increasing deafness, others believe it was inspired by his love for his pupil, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, to whom the sonata is dedicated. Despite the romantic and somewhat tragic theories, Beethoven himself referred to the work as “Sonata quasi una fantasia,” indicating a free-form and imaginative style rather than a programmatic one.
