      Local 58 is pretty similar to Tolkien's _Lord of the Rings_ in terms of influence. Both were pretty solid, they grew a fanbase, and later pieces of work(Fantasy or Analog) were lightly influenced or straight up copied.

    i remember in the walten files discord looking over the voice acting channel, one of the requirements was "the ability to scream" or something similar to that which is kinda funny out of context, but it makes sense!

    analog horror is the only thing that scares me anymore. traditional horror movies are either just jumpscares or more thriller, and im used to real life. analog is good at disturbing me and making me afraid to go to sleep. My fave is probably Walten Files, as hot DAMN does felix's VA do good. i mean, all of them do great, and the arts fantastic, and-

      I love Analogue Horror as an idea, but when put into practice I find a lot of series to follow the same ideas and cliches with no originality. Like your frustration with traditional horror, I too have a frustration with analogue horror. Hell, half the scares in these series are just edited photos made to seem creepy.

    honestly, i have a bit of a soft spot for FNAF horror. I was obsessed with the first few games, and the lore. (and i was like in middle school reading up on how some dude killed kids and was damned to suffering in a animatronic suit) And when the FNAF VHS came out, it hooked me, as i had sort of lost interest post FNAF world.
    Loving the Walten Files so far. And i never realized how good the voice acting was until you pointed it out.

    one of the things ive always loved about analog horror is how it uses audio. at least from things ive seen, the visuals aren't usually the crutch for the horror- the audio is doing a lot of the heavy lifting, with the visuals playing a supporting role. its really refreshing.

  • @phosphorescenceking6114
    @phosphorescenceking6114 Před 2 lety +49

    I've never heard of analog horror. I started watching some of these and I love it, it's great content. I think one advantage this has over found footage, other than not needing a contrived-feeling type of actor involved for the whole script, is the feeling of age. Most found footage stuff feels to me like someone made it for the purpose of being found footage, and it's hard to get into because of that, but by making something feel like a genuine old article, usually articles that are already disingenuous, like old-timey advertisements and such, it feels much more believable. The footage has a quality of authority to the horror, because it implies that it's a declaration of a reference that is already declarative.
    Authority in media is a fascinating concept. The great philosopher Socrates famously didn't trust the concept of written word and believed that writing is a flawed form of communication, because writing carries with itself too much authority compared to spoken word. Like, if you hear someone in person say a bad movie opinion, it's like whatever, but if you see a bad opinion permanently in writing online somewhere, it feels more significant in the mind, because your brain doesn't have an accurate perception of authority. Written word is declarative and final, and so, it feels significant. All static forms of media like writing, videos, stuff like that, they inherently feel like they carry authority. If you quote a famous philosopher like I just did, it feels like it has authority, even though realistically if you were in a room back in the day with Socrates and he just said something to you, it would just feel like a person with an idea like any other. That's why the analog horror stuff works so well, because it goes through multiple steps of increasing in implied authority. It feels like these are actually parts of old static videos that were simply uncovered, meaning it's implied to be an honest reference to a static form of media. Someone trustworthy relaying something factual. The trust is what makes it work.
    Anyways, as for the video itself, the content and editing and all that kinda stuff is really on point. There were parts of the video where you tried to make a dramatic statement here and there, but I felt like those were a bit forced. I wasn't sure what this video would be about at first, in terms of the run time, because there isn't a clear arc to this video, it's just kind of talking about 3 different examples of analog horror. If this had more of a throughline, like an overarching point or something that would give this video some sort of story from start to finish rather than being 3 mostly separate explanations of things that just all happen to be analog horror, it'd work better as a video, and it would hook people in sooner once they have an idea of what the arc of the video will be. But by far and away, the easiest criticism to point out would be the title and thumbnail. Title and thumbnail is what makes people watch something, and they have to be geared towards people who obviously won't know the content ahead of time, and won't already be looking for it either. You have to have a title and thumbnail that will make someone care about the subject and want to see what you have to say. If the title is just "analog horror" then that tells people nothing about what the video might be, especially if they don't already know what analog horror is. I saw this in my sub box, didn't know what it was, and felt no interest in clicking to see what it might be until I noticed it was a TinyLeaf video. Mess with the title and thumbnail until you find something eye catching that compels people to learn more, then you'll get a lot more views on high quality content like this. Think critically about which videos you end up clicking on more often than not while scrolling the tube.

    • @thetiniestleaf
      @thetiniestleaf  Před 2 lety +9

      I appreciate your feedback, and I'm very glad that you decided to check out some of the series for yourself! And yes, thumbnails and titles are definitely something I'm working to improve on, so I'll keep your advice in mind for my next video. :)

      I do think there are exceptions to the rule of authority though. Like for example, I believe someone with the right credentials or influence making a spoken speech to people has just as much authority, if not more, than if it was just written down.

    Good shit right here! just got into analog horror through fnaf vhs, squimp, and walten, and as someone who usually avoids horror movies like the plague the thing that really draws me to them is the feeling of personal-ness and being grounded. It makes me really feel like someone went through the effort to burn the vhs with the video you're watching, you can feel the fingerprints on the video. that what you're seeing is intentional and directed. most horror movies come from an omnipotent to semi-omnipotent and very much third person perspective, but analog horror comes from an unknown but non-omnipotent perspective if that makes sense?

    For those of you who'd like a movie suggestion, I'd recommend The Bay.
    Without spoiling too much, it's a mockumentary about an incident that the government covered up, initially centered around a small town's July 4th celebration and festivities, going very quickly from a good time to the worst Independence Day ever, told through handheld recorders, news reports, dashcams, CCTV, and a few more mediums. It has its flaws, but it's a movie I very thoroughly enjoyed being a fan of found footage/analog horror.

    Analog horror is quite literally in my opinion the resurrection of the horror genre as a whole. It’s much more widely accessible, and has a large amount of quality stories. Not too much variety yet but it is definitely getting there. So tired of the average dogshit horror movie or game that comes out every year or two. Doesn’t mean this genre is completely perfect, there are definitely flaws with it, but overall it is a warm welcome to pop culture in my eyes.

    This sort of seems to parallel a current trend in indie horror games: A sort of nostalgia horror exemplified by Five Nights at Freddy's (possibly jump started by it), where we enter a Chuckie Cheese type pizza place that was common to kids of the '80s and '90s. You also have Poppy Playtime with its historic videos and old style toys (Huggie Wuggie fits right on my bed with other '80s stuffies), and Bendy and the Ink Machine (yes, it's sort of set in the '20s and '30s, but kids of the '80s and '90s often saw old cartoons on television (particularly Warner Bros, but sometimes you would see Betty Boop or really old Disney cartoons). It sort of seems to be Gen X/GenY/Oregon Trail Gen Horror.

    It happens every few months or so
    screw it
    I’ll just watch it with my phone vertically and subtitles on while scrolling through comments
    Maybe that’ll help?
    And after this I’ll bury it in my head a bit over less horror-y videos
    Good ol’ Michael Mercy is a good choice for that if you’re like me
    That US one in local 58 sounds the scariest to me (I ain’t watching any of em I’m a little baby)
    Maybe I should send it to my friends though and see what they think

      Plz don't be rude, analog horror creators put a lot of work into their pieces just as all other creators do. It's okay to have your own personal opinion and to voice it and say stuff like "I do not like analog horror" or something like that but please don't go into full-on kindergartener mode and say "aNaLoG hOrRoR iS a JoKe"
