Is there space for LGBTQ+ in Uganda? | ON THE SPOT

  • The Ugandan parliament has recently passed one of the world's most severe anti-homosexuality laws, which is now waiting for presidential assent. The new law criminalizes the LGBTIQ community and has sparked protests from activists who argue that it deprives them of their fundamental right to life and criminalizes their ability to express love. In contrast, supporters of the law believe it will restore moral control over Ugandan communities and eliminate "foreign" ideas. On The Spot, we discussed the pros and cons of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill with Andrew Mwenda, a veteran journalist who challenged a previous anti-gay bill in 2014, and Medard Lubega Sseggona, a lawyer and legislator for Busiro South.

    As a South African black male, we have been here, we had learning and unlearning to, both culturally and religiously [depending what is your defence stand point] and tolerance is a result of that process. I. Solzhenitsyn once said "intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education. An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility." Like infedility and other immoralities found tolerance,Homosexuality can too. And Religion, people choose to rely on it when it suits them...reigion is like a pair of shoes.....Find one that you like and it fits for you, but don't make everyone wear the same kind.

It now makes sense when paul in the scriptures said, I have made it my goal to focus is Christ and him crucified and nothing else. It makes sense why the knowledge of good and evil was a bad idea to begin with. Unfortunately in this world we live in, these are things we see everyday, always in our faces, and that is why it has to be called out as evil and condemned.

      @ROSEBEL36 Před rokem

      Yes curiosity has two sides, a negative and a positive, but you can’t control which direction one will take or how it will affect that person. The more curiosity, the more knowledge you want to attain about the issue, the more knowledge you get you either get solid on your stand against it or your heart softens towards it, meaning you become more tolerant. When someone becomes tolerant about something, it won’t be long before they start accepting it and being okay with it and living with it.

    I don’t believe that there are no homosexual people in Africa. The difference however lies in nature and nurture which in itself can be a challenge to prove. Seems the Ugandan Parliamentarians are basing their fears on the nurture rather than nature but in the end victimising anything that looks like and or smells like homosexual - hence their woolly statements on the subject. Take the whole woolly thing back to the drawing board.

      Actually the biggest research done so far points to a complex mixture of nurture and nature... although scientists are not well versed with what genes play a role. They suggest that many genes affect the sexuality of an individual. However, my beef with all this, after examining how the western world makes laws, emotional laws are counterproductive. The western countries have done a great job of accepting Muslims for example even its obvious tht their way of life runs against much of what they have fought for. They have also accepted free speech...not because they are stupid or otherwise. By the way, being gay has little to do with western values. It's just development and maturity to understand tht actually, the other person is not as bad as we think.

    Homosexuality and anything associated with it is a a private matter and should remain so unless one commits a crime and by the way regardless of their gender. There are many gapping holes in the bill. The real test lies in in its implementation. It’s likely to victimise many innocent Ugandans. It’s also a negative PR for Uganda PLC.

    Actually Andrew Mwenda annoys me alot inspite of his intelligence. But this time i think he is right. The law makers are mixing up emotions, common sense and in fact disregarding all research about homosexuality. Andrew asked some very interesting questions. I am not gay nor do i find it palatable to my sensibilities. But there is no way i am going to criminalize two consenting adults in the privacy of there home. Actually, it shows how intellectually backward Africans are. It is sad really.
