Photography Techniques for Cloudy Days.

- Shooting in overcast conditions can be a challenge. In this video, I share some techniques that have helped me adapt and overcome those tough days, while going on a photography trip to the San Juan Islands in Washington. These tips apply to, and are demonstrated on, both film and digital cameras.

This is so relatable, and you make some great points, Dylan. I'm feeling validated and inspired! I definitely need to work on letting go and enjoying my shooting time when I have a preconceived idea that isn't working for me. It's really not worth ruining a great day and making memories with our peeps because of that. Also, even the baby cows don't want matcha lattes.
That's great to hear! This entire trip was honestly just a series of conditions not going as planned - which wouldn't matter at all without the pressure of feeling like you have to perform well. If the stars aligned every time then nothing would be special, I suppose. Also, HONESTLY WHO LIKES THEM?

PNW is on my fantasy holiday list... but it's a long, long way from the UK - thankfully I can experience it vicariously here.

I actually take a similar approach on grey days. I would particularly like to emphasise your last tip. a bad photo day is by no means a bad day. Documenting helps enormously with this assessment and improving your own photography through reflection. thank you for this beautiful video.👍

Ferry photography must be its own genre here in WA Lol--My favorite place to shoot in Seattle is in the ferries that run across the Sound. Great vid!

My favorite shot was 5:48, love the contrasting colors with the pink and blues. It was shot almost dreamy like. Low shutter speed maybe? 😅

I live in Anacortes. It’s pretty cool to see it through your lens though. We get familiar with things and tend to miss what is right in front of us. I have never really photographed the ferries, so I’m going to make that a goal next time I hop over to one of the islands. There is some interesting stuff on San Juan Island. Cattle point, lime kiln lighthouse, the mausoleum in Roche Harbor. Come back and give us your take on it.
Ah that's awesome! Small world...can't imagine living over there, felt like such a special area. Would love to come back in the summer and get some nice light - might just have to do that.

Really kind of you, thanks so much! You never know, I suppose. I have 0 consistency in my approach, especially between photo and video. I just follow my thoughts about what I think the photo or video should feel like and pursue it until it's there.
I’ve been on that ferry! I went there last year and went to the same coffee shop! I also agree…Matcha lasts like earth lol. I need to go back and look at my photos from this day. We went whale watching…and didn’t see any whales lol. Always enjoy your videos Dylan!

Haha love the quip about matcha. You really need to try it in Japan where they use better quality and better prepared matcha. I hated matcha before I went to Japan and now I can’t get enough of it. It’s leagues ahead of the crappy export stuff that other countries use!

I’d love to see a similar video about shooting in bright mid-day sunlight. As someone living in Texas blown out skies are more of a problem for us than gloomy days.
Also, just wanted to say that I love your videos. Beautiful vibes, calm atmosphere, they’re just a pleasure to watch. A huge departure from the hordes of CZcamsrs shouting at you.

Sunsets aren’t rare at all. Fisherman’s Bay on Lopez consistently has the most beautiful sunsets on earth. I sailed in one day for a 6 pack of beer and never left. That was 13 years ago.

I find that people that don't like matcha lattes tend to like them once their sweetened with like vanilla syrup. Maybe try that? @@DylanSpitz
