Acoustic Guitar Sessions: Dawes

  • When Dawes came in to perform for Acoustic Guitar Sessions recently, they did stripped-down versions of three songs - “Roll with the Punches,” “We’re All Gonna Die,” and “When the Tequila Runs Out,” from their least stripped-down album yet: the bold new We’re All Gonna Die, out today on HUB Records. While in the AG Studio, Dawes front man Taylor Goldsmith talked about songwriting, guitar playing, and how it all comes together in the L.A. band’s nostalgic sounds, which are based on the folk-rock guitars and vocal harmonies of 1970s-era Laurel Canyon. (You’ll be forgiven if you initially confuse these guys for CSN or America in the clip!)

Dawes write great songs. Melodies and words stand on their own, but I dig the new record. I'm 50 years old and I've seen them multiple times live and now my 15 year has finally noticed them. I hope they sell a billion records. They deserve it.

Music is sometimes bigger than personal musical taste. Thanks for seeing it truly. Your record collection is one I'd love to listen to.

This is wonderful. Much prefer these stripped back versions to their album counterparts!

Taylor showing us how well he "rolls with the punches" when he plays the wrong chord at 1:09....
    I love this band.

The new album is great. I'm glad to see them try out different sounds. But this is a nice companion to that and a good reminder that their songwriting has stayed consistently impressive.

Love all the variations Dawes can put on the same song. I'll admit though, I prefer Wylie's bass to add the bounce and Griff's drums to add the swing. I'm going along for the ride...

Anyone know what chords he's using?
    I can see the C, F, G, variations. There's a couple in there that I can't get.

Strong evidence that Blake may have got a bit carried away seeking unusual sounds and why the new album sounds overproduced.

Keep listening. It was as much their doing as his, and I think once I got the preconceptions out of my head it start sounding way better. Still great songs- it's just a rock record.

Sean Marshall you are spot on. New album is truly the growth of a gifted constructor and arranger of songs. He reminds me of Jeff Tweedy's 'artistic arc' with Wilco.

I personally loved the recording, but also love how it really comes alive live! the recordings aren't the finished article, Dawes tell another story live and that's what great bands do
