  • Who was the most influential leader of the 20th century? What would have happened if the South had won the American Civil War? Would you rather be under siege from the Mongols, the Romans, or the Assyrians?
In a huge moment for transatlantic history podcasting, Tom and Dominic are joined by titan of the genre and friend of the show Dan Carlin, the host of one of the world's largest history podcasts, Hardcore History.
Over the course of two episodes, Dan, Tom and Dominic tackle ten of the biggest questions in history, including counterfactuals and hypothetical matchups.
The second part of this double-header is out on Thursday.

We're history fans! If we got the patience to read history books we got the patience to listen to an extremely interesting conversation for hours! Never feel bad about the length!

And if you don’t have the patience, just score some Pervitin and listen to it on 8x speed…

The trick is to ease your way into history books and pick which ones to read smartly. You don’t want to accidentally end up with a college history textbook that is more scientific in its approach. I recommend listening to the audiobook version of Dictatorland by Paul Kenyon to start. It’s a harrowing account of some of the dictatorships that overtook Africa post colonialism. An extremely good read and one of my favorite casual history books.

@@darkflamemaster824 if you listen, they kept saying they didn't want to stretch it out. Hence why it's in parts. My comment was for them to not consider length when having these conversations. Could of been 4 hours long I would of listened to it all

I have to share this. Whilst listening to the line "After the Tsar had signed the mobilisation order, he turned to his generals and said..." at which point an ad started with the song 'Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match"!!! Perfect timing and how different world history could have been if Nicolas had done this... :0)

My choice for most influential leader of the 20th century is Ho Chi Minh. Ho fought and struggled against the French for decades and then the Americans to achieve Vietnamese independence. The 20th was the century of dismantling the imperialist European empires. It was Ho who led the way and showed dozens of other small colonised countries that is was possible to stand up to larger more technologically advanced powers.

But if Wilhelm hadn't caused WW1, then we'd be talking about Cho, leader of Fascist Korea, and the 15 million Manchurians he killed in the Great East Asian Wars. (which is to say, its very likely some form of horror is inevitable regardless of the path it takes to arrive at it)

Tom Holland and Dan Carlin - together!
I occasionally fantasize about who I'd invite to the ultimate dinner party - if I was Bill Gates rich and could send private jets to collect my guests.
Dan and Tom are always two of my guests - along with Marc Morris, Catherine Hanley and Levi Roach.
Obviously there would be very many others I'd love to invite.

Making a claim about the horrors of dropping an atom bomb, but then in the same sentence talking about how it was helpful to establish it as a deterrence.
The lack of reasoning and the abundance of shallow waffle on display here is an insult to the intelligence.
    Goodbye.
