For the brake lever issue, a trick from the trials world is to put some mouldable rubber putty on the back, and shape it to be round so it doesn't cut you.

An old geo KM is actually a very capable shreddy bike! The bent ST can be a pain though. Oh and the BB is high enough that a 27.5 wheel with 2.6 tyre fits nicely in the back no problem.
