In this video I show a few takedowns from kicks. This quick clip is taken from a full day of training on karate throws and takedowns; which included many throws from kata and older karate texts (i.e. "Funakoshi's nine throws", etc). This clip records some of the throws from kicks we covered on the day, but it needs to be appreciated that this is the "edited highlights" of that section and is hence this clip is not intended to be a replacement for detailed one-on-one instruction. I nevertheless hope the information in the clip is of interest and some use to all viewers.
On the day, the differences between self-defence, fighting and martial arts were thoroughly discussed. These in attendance were therefore thoroughly aware of the correct context for all the methods shown. Some of the techniques shown in this video are most defiantly for "game play", information and enjoyment and would therefore not be appropriate for use in self-defence. That does not mean such methods such should not be studied, or that such methods have diminished value. What is important is that we enjoy the benefits of a broad study while remaining mindful for the correct context for any given method.
IMPORTANT: Some of these methods are potentially dangerous and hence should only be practised in a suitable environment under the direct supervision of a suitably qualified and experienced person.
    Thanks for watching!
    All the best,
    Iain

Indeed! I love how Abernathy Sensei focuses on practicality, making sense of what Bruce Lee would call "the fancy mess of martial arts". Most karate dojo in Canada focus on tournaments, so all kata and sparring, fitness being the main focus of each class with very little room left for bunkai. I am a practical guy, not much of a trophy hound so this makes karate way more interesting to me.

excellent clips, I always enjoy your kata applications and your obvious knowledge of kata. Trying the drills in my dojo is always a good end to any session. Many thanks, Ossu!!

That's the first time I've ever seen anyone show the true meaning of that double downward punch. Until today, I thought you were punching the guy in the stomach with two fists. . Thank you for another insightful video.

Of course, it's great for movies because it looks dramatic, but the practical application is more satisfying and sensible.

finally bunkai/oyo that looks like it will really work---unlike the complicated multi movement (directional) he simply closes with the enemy and destroys the threat kudos

Does anyone know what Te initial blocking technique is called? I mean the open hand gedan barai and jodan shotei uke (guessing) - is there a formal name for that double block? I've seen it used a lot but not seen a consistent name for it. Cheers in advance!

+Southpaw Moose Indeed you can, if you want to break a knee and get kicked to death by his friends :-) Just because we can do something, does not mean we should.
